@T-Mom: Oh that's so interesting on how hives appear when bodies are warm! That explains why they tend to appear at night, and disappear later in the morning...

My DD broke out in hives last night and by morning they were all over her body, concentrated under arms, back of legs, neck, and groin area. Since she has a peanut allergy and environmental allergies, that's where my mind went, but there wasn't anything we could think of that could have caused it. BeNadryl only temporarily made it less itchy and she got a Zyrtec before bed. The pediatrician said no telling what it is but that hives tend to concentrate where the body is warm. I'm thinking now it could be a virus because of Los grade (100) temp and runny nose (DS also has been sick).

Hope he feels better soon!

@mrbee: detergent, different soap? anytime we have changed it up, one of us reacts and we all have pretty easy skin otherwise.

@matador84: We gave Benadryl last night, which fixed the hives temporarily! We're gonna give Zyrtec tonight, which hopefully should help too... fingers crossed!

When I was in college I had a random, very scary case of hives for a year. I would start with small ones on my arms or legs and within hours and some cases, minutes be completely swollen and hivey. Couldn't find a dr that could diagnose. Finally saw a fabulous allergist who put me on steroids and gave me an epi pen and I never had another episode again.

I would always take Benadryl as preventative, would help the swelling and itchiness of the hives.

@lamariniere: Bee pointed out that he started breaking out in hives before we left for California!

Just to loop back (in case anyone comes across this thread later): the doctor said it was probably triggered by a recent cold he had. She did an allergy test, and he was only allergic to hamsters! She suggested we give him Zyrtec for three days and then reassess. If it continues, then we should give him Zyrtec for a few weeks (just through the end of allergy season).

My daughter had a similar issue with hives last year-they would come and go with no real warning or indication as to what caused them. They were big and red all over her legs and arms. I was worried about an allergy as it went on for what I thought was way too long.

We went to see an allergist who did still perform the skin test, but said that the most common cause of hives in children is some type of infection somewhere in the body. He did a swab for strep but said that it would potentially be anywhere in the body and prescribed an antibiotic. I was hesitant to actually use it because I don't <3 them, but my daughter was too itchy that we did. And the hives went away and haven't been seen since.

I am sure that everyone's experience is different, but that was ours. I hope that your little man gets an answer and some relief!

I just got over hives from walking pneumonia. My only symptom was a cough and hives. I also got them from laundry detergent (but they didn't typically go away). It really could be anything.

@lamariniere: Could be! We're back in NYC now though. It definitely was the worst it's ever been tonight. You could be onto something, maybe it's the detergent we used to wash his clothes there!

The last few nights, our son has been breaking out in hives at night. Usually it's worst in the morning, and then it fades within a few hours. Tonight, he woke up because he was so itchy - and I could see the hives all over his leg. Been up all night watching him and worrying.

I'd take him to the ER but Bee had very similar hives earlier this year and saw a doctor, who said that hives are very hard to diagnose and usually resolve on their own. Bee took a Zyrtec regularly and the hives went away on their own.

We're going to see an allergist in the morning, but was wondering if anyone has dealt with nighttime hives with their kids?
