I agree with @mamaof2- saying you would be back with another infant makes it clear that you have been pleased with the level of care you received. I don't think you need to give a reason to quit, but if they ask-maybe tell them you are looking for a more school-like environment.

Our older child will be switching in the fall because of cost, and the younger child will still be at the same place. We just sent an email saying that we were switching for financial reasons, and the director sent a polite response back. (We had previously exchanged some emails with the school about the latest tuition increases, so I suspect it wasn't surprising to them)

@Alba4 @mrslonghorn @mrsbells @mamaof2 Thanks ladies! i just am a wimp about this sort of thing. I hate people to be upset at me. I was planning to just take a businesslike approach to it, and I'm hopeful that the director will too. I guess if there was a "problem" I would almost feel like its easier than just being like, "this place is just better" but it is what it is. I know for LO, it is a better fit as he gets bigger/older!

I think what you suggest @mamaof2 is perfect

I just emailed the director. Said I was giving out 30 day notice, when her last day would be. I didn't give a reason but just said that it was a hard decision but we think it is the best thing for LO at this time.

@psw27: I would be honest and tell that as your LO gets older you think the other place is a better fit for him. Tell them you love their infant program and will def be back if you have another child

I just sent the same message. I wrote an email simply stating that we were giving our 30 days notice, and that X would be his last day at the center. It was very formal and business like.
I would not send another child there unless we had to, and am very happy to leave so I didn't stress about the note at all. However, the director sent a friendly note back saying that she hopes we will use the center for backup care and holidays so apparently my all-business approach wasn't a problem.

We changed daycare when DS just turned 2. But, we were unhappy with his care. We sent an email and then spoke with the director. It was awkward, but we haven't looked back! He is so much happier at his new school and it is a much better fit!

We have decided to make a switch for our LO - he is 21 months next week and he has been at his current school since he was 4 months old. While there is nothing "wrong" with his daycare now, it is lacking in some areas. It was fantastic for him as an infant, but as a toddler and beyond, the room is a bit small and they don't do a lot of activities. I'm confident in our decision, even if the transition will be hard.

My biggest concern is telling our current daycare we are leaving! I am typically really bad at this sort of confrontation - break ups, quitting jobs, etc.

Have you ever broken up with a daycare provider? I want to make sure we leave on good terms because if we have another LO we would definitely want to send them there for their infant/young toddler years. I think doing it via email will be best, but what do I say?
