@BeachMama: oh man these doctors! I think I'm less risky because Ive already had a successful, uncomplicated vaginal delivery. After they broke my water when I was in labor with DS, I went from 4cm to 10cm in 2 hours. But I was already in labor.

@travellingbee: Long story short (and recalling my fuzzy memory), at 40+4 labor hadn't started at all. I had my water broken at 2:30pm and contractions started shortly after. I was only 2cm. They started pitocin shorly after. I had an epidural at 5pm, fully dilated at 2:30am, started pushing at 3am and DS was born at 5:30am via VBAC.

I will add that my OB told me at about 5am that if DS wasn't out soon that he'd either use the vacuum or do another c-section because he was worried about how long I'd been pushing. Although I learned later that he went out of town right after he stitched me up so I think he was on his own timeline :bummed: Either way I ended up with my VBAC.

If you're worried about the timeline maybe try cod liver oil the day before? 1oz shaken in 4oz cold orange juice every three hours up to 4 or 5 doses is a gentle way to do it so you don't end up sick! It started my contractions. Then water breaking made them really jump in gear!

Same thing for me. pit wasn't doing anything (contracting but not dilated) and the OB finally reached way up in there and broke my water. Things went way fast after that. I think I went from like 3-8 in a few hours and I finally got the epidural to sleep for a bit and out came baby

@BelugaBean: Yeah that is what I am worried about. She seemed to think it would go plenty fast after they broke my water but I worry about that time line too.

@travellingbee: The main reason she didn't start by breaking my water was because she said they had to do a c-section 18 hours after breaking my water to avoid infection. She was trying to give my body a chance to pick up on labor with minimal pitocin to avoid being on a timeline like that.

I'll add my experience. They started pitocin at 10:30am because they were hoping my body just needed a jump start and my water would break naturally. I progressed 1cm (to almost 4cm) in four hours so she broke my water around 2:45. DD2 was out by 6pm so I feel like my water breaking really moved things along.

I was! I wanted a natural (unmedicated) birth like my first, so my OB suggested just breaking my water. I was about 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced before he did it. Then I walked around the L&D floor for a little while and contractions started on their own. I was able to have the med free birth I wanted, even though I was "induced".

My water was broken while having contractions. I had contractions at 4cm on, but not much change. Once they broke my water, a few hours later I was ready to push and deliver LO.

Um, Yes! My second time I got to the hospital around 930 for an induction. My OB broke my water first. They had just started pitocin when my labor started fast and furious! Baby girl was born about an hour after my water was broken!

For both of my LOs, my water broke spontaneously without any contractions. Contractions started with LO1 2 hours after my water broke after sitting on a birthing ball. Contractions started with LO2 5 hours after my water broke after getting an enema, and they REALLY swung into full force after sitting on the birthing ball. My 2nd LO was born in Austria and they encouraged me to get the enema as a natural way to start contractions, and it totally worked.

The first time my Water broke naturally after cervidil. Labor still took a while but was progressing. Ending in a vaginal delivery.

Second time we started right with pitocin and it did nothing. Wasn't even painful. So he finally reached up way high in there to break my water and from that point labor went really fast and furious. Successful vaginal delivery as well

I went in for an induction, not dilated at all. I was given Cervidil to soften the cervix but I rolled over in the hospital bed and my water broke. Labor started immediately after my water broke, and since the Cervidil was just inserted not too long before that, I don't think it had much to do with starting labor. I believe my water breaking got things going.

I had to be induced this time due to IUGR at 38w and change. I was only 2 cm but almost 100% effaced. The doc broke my water and within 4 hours I was 4 cm. Things really picked up after 4 cm....another 3 hours later I was 7 cm....and one more hour later I was fully dilated. I never needed Piton. So, from time water broke to time baby R was here it was 8.5 hours.

So I'm 40+1 today and was hoping to have a VBAC. Baby is measuring pretty big and I'm only about 2cm dilated. Since I can't be induced with drugs, my doctor is talking about breaking my water in the next day or two to see if it starts anything. Has anyone had their water broken to induce labor? Did it work? I can't help but feel l like it's just going to end in another c-section.
