We didn't wait at all when we first started solids--from what I remember, at that early age, it's more important that they're starting to try different foods than actually getting nutritional benefit from them, since it's still more important for them to get their calories/intake from bm/formula. We basically upped the amount of solids lo ate based on her interest: eventually she just wanted more solids and we gradually transitioned to giving her more. For the first few months of lo eating solids, she only had them like 1-2x/day, and then only probably ate a few bites at a time (most ended up on the floor/her body, lol!) I didn't even send anything in to daycare until her teacher mentioned that she was starting to be interested in the older kids' food (lo was the youngest)

I didnt know about this rule! DS is almost 8 months and has been having solids one meal per day for about 6 weeks now. There is no real schedule with milk ... he gets milk when he wakes up and I give him a bottle with his "breakfast" (pieces of fruit or puffs or cheese or egg) and then he has milk the rest of the day. Sometimes we give him some of what we are eating at dinner but not enough to mean anything. I guess we should bump up the real meals soon though!

We did BLW with some purees so if baby was awake at mealtimes then s/he would have solids with us.

We have to have a break inbetween or LO won't eat the solids. When we first started solids, I didn't care too much since they weren't as important. But now that we are coming up on a year and I am weaning him off the boob, I want him to start eating more solids.

This is our loose schedule:
7am- bottle upon waking
8:30/9- breakfast
9:30- nap
10:30ish- bottle upon waking
12/12:30- lunch
2ish- snack
2:30- nap
3:30ish- bottle
5:30- dinner
6:30- bottle
7pm- bed

@DesertDreams88: we never did an official break time. Often we would wake up, nurse, eat breakfast (solids) and nurse again before work. At the beginning the solids are more about exploration so I wouldn't worry.

We never bothered waiting in between. But for the first couple months we only did solids at dinner time. So he'd have a bottle at 3, then we'd do solids around 5:30/6 (last bottle at 7:30ish). After a couple months we added solids at lunch time, then snack times, and took away bottles. I know I started a thread on the timing of feeding because it was like he was on a newborn schedule again - eating every 2 hours between bottles and solids.

I feed DD (9 months) her bottle when she wakes up in the morning and after each nap. She usually only drinks 3oz of her 6oz bottle. 30-60 minutes later I give her solids. Then right before I'm going to put her down for her nap, I give her the rest of her bottle that she didn't finish just to give her a full belly for her naps.

ETa: I wouldn't worry too much about solids schedule at 6mos - just fit in where is best in the day.

i think that would be fine, starting out at 6 months. If she isn't interested in food, at that point, it might help to move it a bit so she's more hungry, but you could always make that switch, if it's actually an issue.

@DesertDreams88: we just started solids with my 6 month old and often it works out that she eats very shortly after nursing. She still eats more than I would have expected so it doesn't seem to be a problem so far. But our schedule is sort of all over still with unpredictable night sleep and a toddler around.

We did solids right after, no break, and it was fine. Once he got bigger and we wanted to start cutting down on nursing sessions we flipped and did solids and then milk immediately after.

I've been looking through the posts related to solids since LO is 5mo and we are starting. A lot of the posts mention waiting an hour or so between giving them a bottle and then giving them solids. How important is this breaktime? Is there a point when giving them this break isn't as important?

We normally follow an "EASY" routine and soon my MIL will be caring for LO. I'd like her to stick to the same EASY routine / schedule, and I'd honestly like the solids meal to go immediately after the bottle because it's much more convenient, easier to remember, and more predictable with scheduling.

So basically, at about 6 months, could I give LO a bottle and then proceed with solids, or will that result in short naps due to hunger / less solids intake due to lack of hunger, you think?

We are doing 1 solids meal a day at around 5mo, we will probably bump it to 2 meals a day around 6 or 7mo, them 3 meals a day around 7 or 8mo.
