@swedishfish: I've been doing this out of exhaustion in the early morning hours, and I agree, it's more comfortable! I'm going to try this during the day as well for awhile and see if that helps.

@Pepper: I've been nursing laying down ever since then and my back has been much better! R latches on better this way too for the most part. I put my breast slightly above her head and it seems to work for her latch.

@Pink Champagne: I definitely need to strengthen my core...I'm Flabby McFlabberson over here!

Maybe try to consciously engage your core while you're nursing (sitting up)? Along with bringing baby to the breast, strengthening your core will help support your back. If you can, try to think about tightening your stomach muscles while you're nursing to engage those support muscles.

@swedishfish: Did your back pain ever get better? I don't get spasms, but I have a constant dull ache in my upper back. I know my posture is terrible, but he latches better when I'm leaning over him.

@hilsy85: @runsyellowlites: @prettylizy: @Foodnerd81: thanks for the advice! I really have tried to make sure my posture has been better but I will have to try harder and make sure I do my back exercises. I actually think that R likes nursing better while lying down. She doesn't pop off as much. Maybe this side lying position is working!

I have neck and upper back soreness from breast feeding sometimes, but thankfully it hasn't gotten to te poor of spasms-- I've had that before and I know its truly awful! Do you use a nursing pillow? I notice my back hurts worse if I nurse in bed vs our glider which is a lot more supportive. And I balance the Brest friend a little on the arms of the glider so its a bit higher than my lap. You could even lay a pillow under or on top of the nursing pillow to get the baby to the right height. I also try to rest my head back on the chair once she's latched instead of looking at her the whole time (or, ahem, looking at my phone).

I am no expert by any means but since I've had a bad back in the past and know breast feeding and baby tending in general can wreak havoc, I'm trying to position myself in a way that feels as comfortable as possible.

I had terrible upper back pain in early nursing and when I asked my RMT/Doula about it she said "make sure to bring the baby to you don't bend/contort to get to the baby" she was right. I ended up changing the way I held her and it really helped. I'll aslo echo @runsyellowlites: as she got bigger it got way way easier to just angle her and she would kind of support herself.

I did occasionally. It was also because I had horrible posture while I nursed though.... maybe try & really make sure you're sitting correctly, having a boppy/other breastfeeding pillow hold bebe up to you, & bring baby to breast instead of breast to baby.

As P got bigger where she could sit on my lap more & reach the breast herself I stopped having issues altogether.

And maybe try another chiropractor? You still have all that relaxin in your system from pregnancy so while it's going back down it's always beneficial to get adjusted so you know everything is going back right. :)

I don't have much experience with this, but I would just try to make sure you're sitting well supported while nursing--make sure you're bringing baby to your chest rather than leaning down to get your breast into baby's mouth--that causes you to hunch over. Hope you feel better!!

Wasn't sure whether to put this under breast feeding or your health...breast feeding it is!

About three weeks after giving birth to LO, my back went into spasms. I was on the floor in pain and couldn't take care of the baby. I went to a chiropractor that night and he told me my back had weakened from the pregnancy and breast feeding (I have a generously sized chest). I went six times and stopped for a few reasons.

LO is now over 9 weeks old and it happened again last night. I breast fed her lying down on my bed and it helped a bit but my back still hurts. Did anyone else experience back issues while breast feeding? Was there a position that worked for your back?
