@brownie: I already remove all diary, and chocolate. Well maybe not all as I do get some sprinkles of cheese on my salad once in a while...

New update: I think he only takes 1 oz at 3:45pm feeding (The previous feeding was at 1:15) and 3 oz at 6:15pm feeding... He drank 3.5-5.5 oz on earlier feedings though. His weight has been stuck at the same spot (if he wasn't actually losing a bit) for days already.

I guess I will see the pediatrician next week and maybe a lactation consultant too (even if I get the "yes this is absolutely normal" I'd feel better). I myself needs to see a shrink.

Why can't he just drink 3-6 oz per feeding like a robot so I don't worry?

@irene: constipation, ear infection, or other pains can definitely cause problems. If you are worried about those, you can take him into the doctor. The 20 dollars is worth the peice of mind.

Here are some other ideas:
If it is a letdown issue, pump first and then feed the hindmilk.
If you think he is in pain (constipated, gas, reflux, etc.) then I would remove all dairy from your diet. If that doesn't help, remove all soy. Or remove them for 2 weeks and see if it helps.

Would it be worth pumping a little bit just before feeding him, so he's getting more of the hind milk? I agree with pp saying maybe feed more often for a little while, or indeed you could try the opposite, maybe if he's hungrier he'll behave? Sorry you're having this trouble, it sounds v frustrating!

Do you guys think he maybe constipated? And that's why he doesn't drink?

This morning was worse, he drank 5 mins from my weak side and started crying again. At noon he cried and drank maybe 3 or 3.5 oz. then just now again he refused to eat. I have to pump because I am so engorged and I am afraid my supply would go down. This has never happened because he has been a good eater until recently...

I even emailed dr jack Newman in Canada who supposed to be a breastfeeding expert. He replies thinking I may hv diminished supply so he is not drinking well. I was like, eh????

Sigh I hope this is just an episode because I hate pumping for no reason and I actually like breastfeeding when it goes well... This is driving me crazy as a super type A person...

@mrsbee : yes he gains weight well but this problem also just happened. He is 50-75% at 13lbs and boys have a different table than girls.

i wouldn't worry about the scale or equation at all. it sounds like he is getting enough milk. honestly 3.5 oz in a feeding is more than fine. charlie only took 4/oz bottles for a very long time.

13lb is a great weight. olive is only 14 lbs and she's 6 months old!

don't worry you're doing great!

I would drop the equation, stop using the scale, relax, and feed him what he wants for a week, and see how the weight gain goes. I think micro-managing the breastfeeding isn't working well for you, and is causing way more stress than you need.

this is an article on supplementing... I don't think you need to supplement (!)... sounds like you're doing pretty well!! but the article addresses the "equation" issue.... Hope it helps!

It sounds like he's just telling you he's done and not hungry any more. The equation is a pretty old outdated idea I believe because the baby should take about the same amount of milk from 1-6 months old which is usually around 25 ounces but could be up to 30 or so (read more on kellymom). As nice as the scale is I wouldn't depend on the numbers too much. Listen to what he's telling you which sounds like he's full and happy.

Don't worry about the equation. If you are really worried, feed less more often. I nurse almost every 2 hours with my 11 month old because he does that. We are still going strong. Your letdown may be too much. You could pump for a moment and then try latching.

Also, ounces aren't as important because the quality of your milk changes base on your babies needs. After 3 month, you make as much milk as you will ever make. But it works for years because it gets thicker. Check out Kelly's mom website. You can do this.

I found that every time my baby teethed, his latch changed and we dealt with blisters and all again. Your babies mouth might be changing.

@irene: Ugh, yeah, I honestly would NOT worry about an equation. Maybe take a step back and just keep an eye on his overall weight gain for a week or so. When it comes down to it, the kid WILL let you know if he's hungry! It may simply be a phase where he's just becoming a lot more aware of things and wants to check stuff out/interact with you instead of eating, but that stuff typically passes pretty quickly once they adjust to their "new normal."

We feed in the same boring spot everyday - at the same spot in his nursery.

Yes he has been gaining weight but this problem also just started recently. He was born 8lb 10 oz and now he is about 13 lb 1 oz. And yes for wet diapers. He has 1 poopy d per day or sometimes 2 days.

It was this b* tch / lactation consultant from the hospital who kept insisting I am not feeding my baby enough because of that damn equation, and it stuck in my head and I can't get over it... But 3 oz / 6-8 minutes of drinking from 1 side only for 6 feedings a day is awfully low for a 13 lb baby....

Then I am a bit afraid if I unlatch him, it would spray him already, or he would start to play that I don't know how to latch Back on game....

Is he gaining weight? Does he have a normal number of wet/dirty diapers? I ask because breastfed babies are pretty in tune with how much they need to eat; you rarely need to force them to eat more. Unless you have reason for concern, you'll make yourself crazy by constantly weighing him to see how much he's taking in. I wouldn't worry about some equation.

It sounds like you have overactive letdown because of the spraying. Can you unlatch him yourself when you letdown, use a towel, then relatch to avoid aggravating him? Also, two months seems pretty early to be so distractible, but can you take somewhere quiet/darkish to eat -- perhaps the same spot each time? It helps if they start to get the idea, "Oh, hey, this is the boring spot where I eat."

My 2 month old boy has been exclusively breastfed and everything has been going pretty well until recently. For the past week or so he has been acting weird, pretend he forgot how to latch, and in general getting pretty distracted during breast feeding.

After he had suck on my "more milk" side for about 1 minute, he'd release and my milk would spray everywhere - onto his face and shirt and on myself. Then he'd cry hysterically and refused to drink more. It happened once before when we were outside and it was embarrassing as my clothes got all wet.

For other times, after sucking for about 6-9 minutes, he would release my nipple. After I burped him and he seem to still show signs of hunger (rooting a bit, sometimes sucking his hand or the burp cloth), I'd offer the 2nd side. However he would be laying on the boppy pillow, look and me and smile and coo a bunch of stuff as if he's trying to tell me something. Then when I insisted that he should drink, he would pretend as if he forgot how to latch on. He would latch a bit and spit my nipples out and latch and spit it out a couple of times. He'd continue to play this "i forgot how to latch on game and play with my nipple with his mouth. Then if I continue to try to get him into the breast feeding position, he'd cry hysterically until I pick him up.

I'd then weigh him (we have a baby scale), but usually he would have just drank 3-3.5 oz. I weigh him on a normal feeding session he'd normally drank 5-5.5 , sometimes 6-6.5 oz. There was one time I was so frustrated I'd offer him my nipple while he was still laying down on the scale, and he'd take it and suck for a couple of minutes for another oz!

Today for the past 4 feelings he was doing just that. What is going on?? He did have his 2-month vaccination 2 days ago but I doubt it is because of that because he has been acting that way for a while. Today is just the worst.

The reason I am so concerned is because of that breast feeding equation where you take the weight of the baby times 2.5 equals to the amount of oz he needs each day. So 13 lbs times 2.5 means he needs 32 oz a day and he really need 5.3 oz each feeding if we feed him 6 times a day. Then I am afraid if he continue playing this game, I will lose my milk supply. Are my worries valid?

Pleas help as I don't want to need to start pumping and give him bottles only if he really refuses my nipples....
