Either should be fine. They will send you for imaging. It is preferred to have it done someplace that is familiar with reading images on lactating breasts, but you may not be able to find such a place (I couldn't around here).

@Ms maths: I found a lump while pregnant and went to see my family doctor. She referred me to imaging for an ultrasound. I was then referred to a specialist and ended up having a lumpectomy during my second trimester.

Definitely OB. I had a large lump for like a year during breastfeeding. It's actually really frustrating to get seen during lactating because they don't typically do screening for lactating moms, but I am high risk for breast cancer so eventually I got to the right people:place. They did a breast ultrasound along with a manual exam and decided it was probably fine and to recheck in 3 or 6 months or whatever.

When I had one, I went to my PCP who referred me to a breast cancer specialist for a biopsy. It's likely it's a benign cyst that just is enlarged from breastfeeding. My cyst is about the size of a marble regularly but during breastfeeding it's literally the size of the entire underside of my breast.

Thanks for the replies! My first reaction was to go to the OB/GYN since it seems more explicitly related to their expertise, but I wasn't sure it actually mattered.

I think I'll try for the OB/GYN but switch to my PCP if I can't get an appointment in the near future at the OB/GYN.

I found a strange lump a couple of years ago, and I went to see my obgyn. They didn't think it was anything, but scheduled a mammogram for me since my husband was so nervous about it.

I noticed a lump a few years back when I had to switch the type of bcp I used. Due to my insurance, the only person I could see initially was a CPN, who is also the person who does my annual and serves as my PCP. She did an exam and thought it was fine, and indeed it went away after a few weeks, so I didn't need to be referred. If I could have, though, I would have probably gone to an OBGYN.

Good luck, hope you get answers soon...

I would go to your OB/GYN. But there's a good chance he/she will refer you to someone else if he/she agrees it should be looked at further. Mine found a lump during one of my well woman exams and sent me to get a diagnostic breast ultrasound done at an imaging center.

I would go to my OBGYN since they do routine screenings as part of my annual.

@Ms maths: I would go to the doctor that does your annual exam if it doesn't take any longer to get in with them than the other. For me that's my OB GYN. I don't think it matters which you go to first as either would refer you for diagnostic tests.
I hope everything is ok!

About a week ago I noticed a large lump (maybe nickel size?) in one of my breasts. I think it's likely breast-feeding related, but I want to get it checked out.

But I'm not sure where I should make an appointment. I could go to my primary care physician (a family doctor), but I don't know if I'll just need to make a follow-up appointment with someone else. Or I could make an appointment at the OB/GYN practice where I got my prenatal care.

Does it matter where I make the initial appointment?
