@irene: well I'm going away for a whole day pretty much in mid October and want I have enough for that, plus make sure she will continue to take a bottle. But other than that yeah I'm trying not to stress about it.

I usually tried to use or freeze everything within 24 hours, because we open our fridge a lot

If she's just 6 weeks and you are not going back to work, I wouldn't even worry about pumping yet if the supply/demand is fine with all nursing! Enjoy it while you can before the evil pump comes in. Argh!

But after that, I've pumped and left in the fridge for 5 days before and freeze it and it seem to turn out OK. I'd freeze it within 3-5 days though.

@Foodnerd81: Oh yeah, I would definitely check that. I did that before I had too much in the freezer because I wasn't going to continue pumping for nothing!

On Maternity leave, I also wanted to make sure I always had a bottle in the fridge, so I'd pump at least once a day and once I had 8 oz in the fridge, I'd freeze 4 of it. Doing this also helped me build a stash of about 60-70oz before returning to work at 12 weeks.

On maternity leave always froze immediately, and then used the oldest (frozen) milk first. I wanted to make sure to cycle through the frozen milk.

@Foodnerd81: Yeah it worked well for me! I am back at work and of course wishing I had pumped more often so I had a bigger stash, but if that's not a concern, it's pretty doable.

@Foodnerd81: That's a good idea - I never even thought to check that! Luckily he took frozen milk with no problems, so hopefully the same is true for you!

Ok thanks. I'm thinking I should thaw one if the frozen ones and make sure she takes it before freezing too much too.

On my maternity leave, I would usually freeze within 48 hours,. I only really kept milk out if I knew I was using it for something, otherwise would just thaw frozen if I needed to do something away from baby. But, if what you have there smells fine I wouldn't hesitate to freeze it.

I usually put it on the freezer on day 4. So if I pumped today (9/11), morning of 9/15 if it's not already used, I freeze it.

When I was on leave, I always wanted 1 bottle of milk in the fridge so DH could feed LO if I needed to go out, sleep, etc. I TRIED to pump more than once every 4 days but it didn't always happen. So when it was day 4 and time to freeze, I'd pump again to replace it with a fresh bottle.

Here are the kellymom storage guidelines: http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milkstorage/milkstorage

You're probably fine if it smells okay. I try to freeze within 72 hours.

In terms of when I freeze vs store in fridge, I pump for one 4 oz/bottle a day. I do two pumping sessions and whatever I get beyond those 4 oz goes in the freezer.

I'd freeze it!

In general, it's best to freeze it when it's fresh, so now-a-days I'll freeze the day of or within a couple days of pumping, but I've stored in the fridge for 5-6 days before freezing and it turned out fine. So if it's been 5 days and it still smells good and you don't want to waste it, freeze it! <3

How long will you keep milk in the fridge before freezing it? I have two ounces from 9/6, so 5 days ago. If it smells fine and I put it in the freezer today is that ok or should I toss it? I dot think we will give her a bottle today and its such a small amount...

Just generall when do you freeze vs store in the fridge? I'm not going back to work but need a small stag for occasional days away. I've put pumping on the back burner for the moment b it was stressful trying to figure out timing with her irregular naps (6 weeks old).
