@ladyfingers: I would bet money that you have vasospasms, and it may even be raynaud's, which affects circulation...do you typically have poor circulation in your feet and hands? There are definitely ways to get rid of the pain! Like I said, magnesium helped me a ton, and I think there's a stronger prescription med you can get if need be. See what the LC says but I promise, if you stick with breast feeding the pain WILL go away at some point!! I also cried through every nursing session for the first 3-4 wks because it hurt SO bad, and I thought it would always hurt. But it WILL get better once you figure out what the issue is.

I agree with hilsy85. I think it sounds like vasospasms. We had thrush too, but the vasospasm pain was more of an deep ache less of an itchy burning. After feeds my nipples would get incredibly hard, so hard they hurt to touch. I found that covering the breast quickly after feeding and using a heating pad made it a lot better. After correcting LO's latch they went away quickly.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, I swear.

@travelgirl1: no white spots (he also just went to the pediatrician Friday) but he does have a yeasty diaper rash that they gave us Restinol for.

@hilsy85: it does get worse when cold! I thought it was just because being cold made my nipples stand up and being sore from feeding, that made them hurt.

I contacted an independent lc to help with latch and the terrible pain I've been having. Hopefully will hear from her tomorrow. This is pretty much my last stop before formula, since I kicked over the coffee table when LO latched on my right earlier today.

That sounds like vasospams to me...it's almost exactly how I Described the pain I had. I would get those aching pains randomly theoughout the day. You can get it from nipple trauma. Does the pain get worse when you're cold? Taking 500mg of magnesium and calcium for a about 2 wks helped enormously, as Did fixing Los latch.

Eta that I initially thought I was suffering from thrush and even went thru the meds for thrush. The pain decreased but then came back and didn't go away until I took the magnesium.

Agree that it could be thrush. Like @sorrycharlie, I felt like I had shards of glass in my breast. My LO never had thrush symptoms, either. Thrush is easier to get when your nipples are damaged (cracked, bleeding, etc), which is what happened to me when we were struggling with poor latch. Here's some info on thrush: http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/child/thrush-resources/

I had this and it was thrush - but my LO never got it, thankfully - I finally realized I had it because it felt like instead of milk, I was letting down shards of glass. Honest to god.

This could be a deep clog (I also had that) or normal. I'd massage while feeding just to be extra safe :)

Could be thrush... That's how mine felt. Check your LO's mouth for white spots. Hope the pain stops soon!

I told my husband that afteri had thrush, clogged duct, etc that I knew breastfeeding would get easier once I had crossed every issue off the list! You are almost through the woods!

I had some clogged ducts that kinda sound like that. Mine wouldn't get red or warm, like when I had mastitis, but it would be tender to the touch. I used warm compresses and massaged and they usually went away.
Is there any weird spot on your nipple? I also had a bleb one time that was blocking the duct, it looks almost like a pimple on your nipple.

The same thing happens to me. Sometimes even when I inhale I get the pain deep in my tissue I guess it is?

same as @Weagle, i would have random shooting pains that would come and go for a couple days. i immediately thought thrush or mastitis at first, but now i think it was just related to the boobs getting used to their new job.

I would randomly, but often get shooting pains along the sides of my boobs in the early days. I still do, but it's very infrequent. I always assumed it was just part of adjusting to breast feeding.

We've been struggling with site nipples due to poor latch, but the past few days I've had other issues. During and after feeding on my right side, I'm having a deep breast pain that includes the nipple. The breast isn't hot or red and there are no lumps so I don't believe it's a clogged duct or mastitis. Sometimes I feel it in my chest, just to the left of the right breast. It persists for maybe 10-15 minutes after a feed and sometimes comes back intermittently after that. Whether I'm engorged or not. And now I'm starting to feel it on the left too -- my left side has been the pain free side but today I've had sharp pains in my nipple during the feed and the same dull ache, but not as bad.

Does this sound like something anybody has had?
