I am renting a pump from the hospital and I love it. It costs us $75 a month but insurance is coveing it since I had a preemie. I
got all the pump parts for free at the hospital because I had to start pumping right after delivery since my baby was in the NICU. I'd suggest renting before buying. My friend bought a pump and never used it because she had lots of breastfeeding issues.

I love my Medela Freestyle! I'm able to clip the pump to my pants and walk around the house to tend to other things. I was able to get more milk with the Freestyle than the Medela Lactina (hospital grade pump).

i would recommend the medela freestyle or instyle. i also used a medela hospital grade pump with both charlie and olive for a little while, but i was able to get just as much milk with my instyle.

i couldn't live without my double electric pump, but some exclusively breastfeeding moms do fine with just a manual pump. i don't have the patience or hand strength to deal with a manual pump though!

i'm so glad that i had my pump ahead of time because both charlie and olive had jaundice and i had to pump right away.

Since I had some BFing difficulties at first, insurance covered a pump rental (Medela Symphony) for me for 3 months as well as the parts/collection kit. I'd see if insurance will cover your pump rental at all, and if not, then you can wait until baby is 4 weeks or so to start building your stash, and by then it should be clear whether you intend or will be able to keep BFing or not. Just pick the pump you want, and have it in your Amazon cart so you can just click the button to get it when you're ready. I will say that it was handy for me to have the pump since I was able to build a decent stash before going back to work. Insurance stopped covering the pump once we got our issues sorted out, but by then I had a Pump-in-Style, which I opted for over the Hygeia Enjoye only because it was given to me and I already had the Medela parts. I've been using it for 13 weeks now (2x/day, 4x/week) and so far, no complaints.

I second the Hygeia (thanks for the recommendation on your blog @ohapostrophe!)

I had the same plan as you, and it has worked out great! We hit a few bumps along the way with poor latch and jaundice, so my son has been on a bottle along with boob from the start, and we just kept going. I love that my husband can take night shifts or feed when I need a break.

I rented a hospital grade Ameda for a month, which worked great- but the Hygeia EnJoye works even better than the hospital grade pump! It has a much stronger suction and pulls more milk than the other pump ever did.

My recommendation is that you rent a pump first and see how things go before you invest a large chunk of money. The rental was also $50 a month for me, and the lactation consultants at my hospital gave me the parts for free.

PS- whatever you choose, go double electric with a hands free bra, it saves so much time!

Hi! :) I have the Medela Pump in Style (Metro bag) and I really like it because I can take the motor part out of the bag and it works really well. Even if you EBF, you may still want to buy a pump for the reasons you stated (giving yourself a break, bonding for your DH) and also to increase milk supply or to build up a freezer stash. Not to mention, sometimes the baby will fall asleep while breastfeeding (happens a lot actually) and you'll want to empty out your milk so that you dont' get a breast infection (mastitis... yikes!) and to keep up your milk supply. And like the other ladies mentioned, you can also rent a hospital one for a month and see if it's something that works for you. The hospital ones were $50/month at my hospital (not including the parts). I plan on renting a hospital one in addition to having my own Medela because I hear the hospital ones have stronger suction and would like to use that one at home and use the PIS at work or on the go.

I have a Medela Freestyle and I love it. It's not complicated to use and I like that it comes with hands free straps and you can clip it to you and walk around. You're not plugged into the wall or strapped to a bag.

I would go ahead and buy a pump to be honest with you. The only reason you wouldn't use one is if your milk doesn't come in. You could wait until after the baby latches and you know that you have a supply before you open the box, they're returnable as long as the box isn't open.

I have a hygeia enjoye which I love for lots of reasons. It has adjustable speed and suction settings (separate) which I found important in getting a good letdown with the pump. Some recommend waiting to get one but I used it very early on and am glad I got it ahead of time. The hygeia is a closed system pump which means it's safe to resell/share the pump (each user needs their own tubes/pump parts) which is a huge advantage too.

I had a Lansinoh pump which is now Affinity. I liked it a lot (especially price-wise compared to the Medelas) and my SIL uses the same pump (not mine, just the same one) and likes it too.

I think you should a pump (rental or otherwise) as you will need it to help build supply.

I had a manual on hand but rented a hospital pump at first to get my milk supply going since it was slow to come in. Used it for the first month or so and then mainly switched to a manual.

You will want a double electric if you are going back to work for sure. The Medela PISA isn't a bad choice, we went with the Freestyle. I like that it comes out of the bag.

I was so happy to have it when she was born because I ended up needing to pump right away. 9 months later I am still using the thing.

I bought a double electric pump because I also want to breast feed as much as possible but will be going back to work about 2 months after the birth, so my plan for now is to pump as much as possible and build up a stash before I go back to work.

I was using a medela PISA and liked it but I never had a really strong let down so when I started having supply issues around 5 months I had to rent a medela symphony to get more milk out. Like some of the PPs said, you may want to consider renting a pump for the first month and then making a decision of what pump to buy. By then you may have a lactation consultant you trust and I'd ask their advice.

I rented a pump from the hospital, and since you have to buy all the extra parts it still cost me $100 for just a week. So I would just go ahead and buy one.

If you want to wait and see how it goes, you might want to entertain renting a pump from the hospital? Otherwise, I had a Medela Pump In Style and it worked great for me but I have never used another one so I have nothing to compare it to.

I hope to exclusively breast feed but without the baby here yet, I don't know if she'll take to it, etc. Do I need to buy a breast pump and should I plan to be pumping in tandem with breast feeding? Ideally, I'd love to have my DH feed her too to give me a break and for bonding purposes.

If breast feeding doesn't work, I'd still like to bottle feed her breast milk.

For these two possible scenarios, which breast pump do you recommend? I hear the Medela Pump In Style is a great option.

Thanks in advance!
