I'll be staying home with the baby and intend on breastfeeding. I bought an Avent manual just to help with engorgement. I didn't want to spend money on a pump I won't used too often and in the worst-case-scenario, I can't breastfeed.

The Avent manual was cheap and had good reviews.

I got the Hygeia Enjoye LBI double electric pump. I found out about the pump through @ohapostrophe's blog and have since done a lot more review. It's a hospital grade pump that can be multiuser because it's a closed system as long as other users have their own personal accessory set (~$30). It makes it a green pump, which is great, and you can adjust both pump speed and suction. I haven't used it yet (waiting for LO to arrive any day now) but will give an update once I get to use it. =)

@pelikila: I'll be home for the first 6 weeks but then I'll be returning to work, so I'd like to get her used to taking breast milk from a bottle also before I go back.

I plan on getting the Lansinoh Affinity double electric pump. Its about $130 so its much more affordable than Medela or Ameda pumps. Hopefully I wont regret this purchase

I had originally registered for the Medela Freestyle, but since my insurance is covering 100% of the costs, I'm just going to get the best electric double hands-free pump they have through their vendor--which is an Evenflo Purely Yours Breastpump made by Ameda.

I just bought my pump yesterday! We went with the Medela Freestyle, I'm really hoping that upping my arsenal of tools so that I can be a BF mommy and the Freestyle got the best reviews for portability and functionality.

I'm a SAHM and have the Medela PISA. I usually pump once or twice each day, and I really wouldn't want to use a single electric or manual. To me, the extra cost was worth it. Definitely shop around - I got mine for $225. I also rented the Medela Symphony before I bought a pump. I was having a hard time breastfeeding, and that sucker is awesome. I'm really glad I rented before I purchased.

i pump 4 times during the day while i'm working, and can't imagine doing it without a double electric breastpump. i have a medela instyle because i got it new for half price, but otherwise i would have purchased the freestyle.

i also have a manual handpump (the medela harmony), and i can't get nearly enough milk out of it as i can with my instyle. i'd only use it if i had to be out someplace for a long time and couldn't take my instyle.

if i were a sahm, i'd still want a double electric. i would want to pump so others could feed the baby, and if i need to pump right before going out for instance, a double electric could get the job done in 15-20 min. but i'm lazy and impatient!

I bought the Lansinoh manual pump after searching for mega reviews. I only plan on pumping maybe once every couple days so I can get a nap in or something while the hubs is home and he can feed not having to worry about being male.

I think it depends a lot for your needs though. If I was going straight back to work, I'd never have just a single manual pump.

@Pipers Mommy: ditto! I was going to bring up the health insurance benefits thanks to the new health care legislation.

We started off renting the Symphony with Lala for the first couple months. That thing was a rolls royce, but unfortunately out of our price range. Then I used an old Pump N Style (shoulder bag style) that I had borrowed from a friend. It was fine, but there was no love. I also used the big metal hospital ones while I was at work and then finally got the one that Piper's has. I like it just fine and really they all worked just fine!

I have the Medela Instyle Advanced Backpack (double pump). It was great and I was actually able to get it through my health insurance because it was seen as 'medically necessary' so it was no cost to me and given to me at the hospital. (normally $300)

I got one of the more expensive ones, the Medula In Style Advanced Pump with an on-the-go-tote. I think it was $270. I died when I found out how expensive it was but it came highly recommended so I bought it.

I love it. The tote is great because it looks like I'm traveling with 2 purses and not a huge pump. It works really well, I've never had a problem. I definitely think you have to get the double pump if you're planning on pumping at work. I pump 4 x's a day for 20 mins. I wouldn't be nearly as efficient if I was using a single pump.

This is so individual. A lot depends on how often you'll pump, too. I don't have to do it more than a few times a week so I really like my AVENT single electric or Medela manual. I feel like the double is too much set up!

I would consider renting a hospital grade pump first. They are gentler and more powerful, and you can make sure BF is going well before making a permanent investment.

Will you be staying at home after baby comes or working away from home?

If you will be a work away from home mom then I'd suggest you focus on the double electric breast pumps. If you will be a stay at home mom that just wants to be able to go out every once in awhile sans baby, then either a single electric pump or manual pump may suit your purposes.

For those of you that are breastfeeding, what pump do you use or what pump are you going to use? There are so many different options out there and a huge variety of price ranges, and it's overwhelming. Are the super expensive ones really that much better?
