I agree the hand pump is the best route for the beginning because you don't know what will happen and what you'll need. No one plans to have issues that require a double electric, but they happen...

I have two, Medela Freestyle and a single Medela Hand pump. The Freestyle is a double electric workhorse, but the hand pump does an amazing work too. My opinion is get a hand pump (especially for in those early days, it doesn't take much to get some milk from an engorged boob!) and then go for your DE.

I would wait to purchase one until your LO is here. I have the ameda purely yours and its a double electric pump and cheaper than the medela. At home you could get away with a single, but I find it handy pumping both at the same time to build up my freezer stash. One thing to think about is if you need a pump right after LO is born, renting a hospital grade pump would be better for your supply. The pumps at the store are meant for maintaining a supply once its established.

I don't know what the best pumps to have would be, but you could always buy the $100 one to have when LO is born, but not open it until you need it. That way you can return it if you are able to get one with insurance, but you have it if it turns out you need it right away?

I have the Medela PISA, I really like it...however, I think since I stay home a lot, a single pump would have been sufficient enough. I got it before LO was born so I wasn't sure how much I would really need. If you plan on using it for pumping at home I think a single would be just fine!

Which kind do you have?

LO isn't due until May so I was thinking of waiting until July 1 to get a pump through my insurance but then I read a thread about how someone had one for work and one at home so now I'm kind of considering getting one for home and using the insurance-covered pump at work.

I was looking at the store and there were several around $100 that were single electric. I thought that might be a good idea for at home, for LO to nurse on one side and to pump on the other to help build a stash before I return to work. And, I've heard from several moms that they had issues early on where pumping came in handy and I wouldnt be eligible for the insurance-covered pump until LO was ~6 weeks old.

What pump did you have? Would you recommend spending the $100-150 for a single electric to have at home?
