DD2 is sensitive to dairy and had really bad eczema at 6 months. She was EBF and we didn't see any issues other than the eczema until we introduced cow's milk at 1 year. We now give her soy but let her eat limited amounts of food dairy. The pediatrician didn't want to test her because a positive/negative test wouldn't mean much for a mild allergy or intolerance. I would definitely ask the allergist what to do about the allergens, because there's a lot of mixed information about continuing to introduce or avoiding mild allergens. On the other hand, we are advised to completely avoid the antibiotics she has reacted to because they expect a second exposure to be worse. For what it's worth, she still has the eczema at 15m but it is way less severe.

@ineebee: Oh, and related to that, there seems to be a link between eczema, food allergies, and asthma, so just keep that in mind! Both my kids suffer from asthma and it's probably been the hardest for us to deal with.

If you're already dealing with food allergies and eczema, I just wanted you to be aware that you might also have to deal with asthma. Keep an eye out for coughing/wheezing (if you want specifics on what to look for, let me know) and don't worry about being overly cautious!

@ineebee: That could be why your allergist didn't tell you do avoid tree nuts (assuming that's the case). False positives are a thing, so I am glad you only got tested for a couple things!

Eczema sucks though, so I feel you. Both of my kids had it as babies, and my youngest (3) still has some mild eczema, though he seems to be FINALLY starting to outgrow it.

@Adira: Such a bummer - I remember seeing your post about how it got worse. 😩

The allergist tested at all because she has eczema, and our derm and allergist agreed that it’s a good idea since eczema kids also have allergies. He only tested the peanut & egg and also dust mites (negative) because he was doubtful that she would test positive, and only tested the top three offenders or something. But yeah, she hasn’t had a reaction to anything yet, because she hasn’t been exposed to anything yet. Shrug??

We discovered my son had multiple allergies around 6 months after blood testing because of his severe eczema. He’s allergic to eggs, peanuts, some treenuts and dairy. I eliminated dairy from my diet because I was still BF and dairy is present in breastmilk, other allergens are not. I also lived on peanut butter and dairy and our older child doesn’t have any allergies. I will say that my son had problematic skin from birth. He was very sensitive to all soap and perfumes, sonmaybe that contributed to him being more susceptible to allergies?

@ineebee: Question: why did she get tested for peanuts and eggs? Did she have reactions to them?

Our allergist only does testing after a reaction (minor exception: peanuts and tree nuts will be tested together, regardless of which one you reacted to). So my son had a reaction to peanuts and we did the skin prick test to confirm the allergy. The blood test was really just to get the severity so we have a baseline for whether he's outgrowing it or not in the future (he's not - he's getting worse).

@Adira: I’m gonna double-check about the tree nuts actually. He made a bunch of recommendations before the skin test and then made a few corrections after it came back positive, and I can’t remember what’s what! But yeah I worry about allergic reactions especially before we get the full work-up about all her allergies.

@ineebee: I'm not surprised by that suggestion. The latest data says that the earlier an allergen is introduced, the less likely to have an allergic reaction. Hummus was probably suggested because sesame is a rising allergen.

Did your allergist mention what to do about tree nuts? Mine had us avoid them altogether when we discovered the peanut allergy because they are often linked (and turns out my son is allergic to both).

@ineebee: Oral Immuno Therapy! She started at 8 months (with like a tiny peanut powder flake) and she is currently 1 year old. She's been a trooper. It's time consuming, but has been worth it for our family.

The advice he gave is 100% accurate. My daughter has to eat tree nut butter (Trader Joes FTW) every day as they say that early and consistent exposure is really important. I know tons of kids (at least 5+) who tested negative for tree nut allergies originally, but are now facing them 6+ months later due to not following our doctor's advice to consistently dose tree nut butter. Any of the top allergens our daughter has tested negative for we have aggressively incorporated into her diet.

ETA: Eggs feels like a huge deal, but depending on level of allergy you can potentially do baked eggs. I found that really freed us up! I know it sounds impossible right now, but our daughter really lives a fairly normal life. We all still eat peanut butter (and eggs) and she's happy, thriving.

@LBee: Thank you for your response!!! What does OIT stand for? How long has your LO been doing it? Our doc is gonna have us do a good challenge also, and I’m eager to start! And yeah, it’s really hard to accept.

@Adira: Thanks for your response! I’m glad to hear these experiences. It’s definitely for DD’s Avery that I accept the reality of her allergies! And that’s so helpful, the difference between MSPI and allergies. I have so much to learn! And yeah, FARE has so much great info!

Something that’s kinda freaking me out is that my doctor recommended that we “aggressively” introduce other allergens to her ASAP, like hummus and wheat products. But I’m like...really? Maybe I’m remembering wrong because everything the doc said is blurring together.

@ineebee: I think most EBF moms who had to alter their diet was due to their child's intolerances, which are different than allergies. The most common being MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance). I'm not an allergist, but it's my understanding that someone with a milk allergy is reacting to something DIFFERENT in milk than someone with a milk intolerance (milk protein vs. lactose for example). One is probably more commonly passed through in breast milk, while the other isn't (or is such a small amount that it shows up as mild eczema).

Both my kids have food allergies (milk, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame) and I ate all those foods and breastfed them without issue (besides also mild eczema).

I obviously don't totally understand it either, but my kids have had anaphylaxis after consuming their allergens, but no issues consuming my breast milk. I suspect whatever it is they are allergic to is either altered enough in breast milk to not cause an issue, or is not passed on through the breast milk.

If you don't have to change your diet, don't. But don't think that just because YOU can consume their allergen, they can consume it too.

Also, I'm sorry you're dealing with food allergies! They suck! I'm here if you have questions. And FARE is a great resource.

Not uncommon. I am pretty much a peanut butter product and eat over easy eggs every morning. My daughter is allergic to both - including having an epi pen for peanuts. I get the denial, though. My daughter had a really bad reaction to peanut butter and I sent a picture to @jape14 trying to claim maybe it wasn't peanuts and did she think it was super bad, sudden eczema. It's hard to accept. Give yourself some grace and know that you aren't the only one that is like WTF. We also don't have these allergies in our family. Genetics are weird.

Also - the world is changing! My daughter is in OIT and eats 2 tbsps of peanut butter every day. They anticipate she will have grown out of the allergy thanks to OIT by the time she goes to kinder. We challenge with eggs next week. Happy to chat more!

ETA: I did ask my allergist about cutting eggs & peanuts out of my diet and he said to keep eating them like normal and it wasn't even remotely unheard of that she was tolerating them through breastmilk.

After a skin prick test yesterday, we found out that DD (6mo) is allergic to peanuts and eggs -- so far. Blood test is the next step to find out what else.

Here's my confusion. She's EBF, and I eat eeeeverything, including plenty of peanuts (Reese's, yum!) and eggs several times a week. Baby has no reaction to anything. She has mild eczema, but it doesn't really flare up, and it's pretty under control. The doctor said to keep my diet the same. I know so many moms who had to cut things out of their diet for their allergic EBF babies, so what gives?

I'm also kind of in a state of denial about the allergies. No one else in our families has any allergies that we know of, so I was really surprised at the result. I think I just need someone to knock some sense into me and say that even though she's not reacting to anything I'm eating, that that doesn't mean she's not allergic.

ETA: I'm definitely posing this question to the allergist when we go back to him soon, but just wanted to hear from anyone else who might have experience here.
