Thanks @Astro Bee: @Hilsy85 and @peaches1038! He also spits up when pooping... Which often happens while he's feeding. Probably just a developmental thing that'll lessen as he gets older.

@Mrs. J: definitely likely! I still feel like I'm in the engorged phase at the beginning.

This is happening to us too. He did it a ton in the very beginning but at almost 3 weeks old, it happens much less

My DS would pull off at the beginning sputtering, and it was due to an overactive letdown. I was advised to lay back when feeding to allow gravity to counteract the initial force. It seemed to help.

I think most babies spit up a lot at first. It should lessen as their digestive system/esophagus matures. Try holding your LO upright for half an hour after eating and see if that helps.

LO2 (1 week old) pulls off the breast at least once per nursing session and kind of chokes/sputters/swallows and then goes back to eating. He also spits up fairly frequently (though it isn't projectile at all, and only tends to be directly after eating - often if I lay him down for a diaper change).

I don't remember this happening with LO1. Is this common? Is he getting too much milk/too fast?

He feeds from both sides for most sessions but often doesn't finish the second - it still hurts from being full. during the day, he often only eats for a couple minutes on the second side.
