@Kemma: interesting about the ratios for food and breastmilk at each age. I'm also not sure how much is coming out at each feeding. I have pumped a few times and it has only been 1-2.5 oz. from each breast. I know pumping gets out less, but still doesn't seem like a lot.

I think she's probably around 20%ile right now. Maybe less. Initially she was like 98 then 50, then 35 ish.

I don't think that sounds like too much BFing, but see what the doc says i guess.... I'm actually worried about mine still having too many calories through liquids and he'll be one in a week.

I only nurse morning/night - but he gets 2-3 5-8oz bottles of formula a day. The last bottle of the night I give him 7-8oz, then he nurses and probably only gets about an ounce or two from me.

He eats breakfast/lunch/dinner and has snacks and does really well even though he only has two teeth that just poked through on the bottom... a lot of food still ends up on the floor, but he LOVES food.

Mine was about 6 times. 3x during the day, evening, overnight 1x, and then wakeup. Although I will say the she often had nursing strikes from 9-12 mo so in reality I had to pump a lot. But I always offered, and she took bottles at daycare so I had to keep up my supply. At almost a year, she probably took ~20-24oz a day. And she ate pretty well in addition to that.
After 1 year, I quit pumping at work so she went right down to feeding only 2x-3x. I night weaned the last session at 15mo. But then after 15mo she increased during the daytime hours, even though the ozs were still much lower than before 1 year.

@Mrs. Goose: if it makes you feel better, breastmilk is far more nutritious and calorific then most solids so cutting down on the nursing isn't always the answer when weight gain slows down. And to make you feel even better my wee guy was in the 91st percentile for weight at birth but under the 50th percentile but the time he turned one. He's 2-3kg lighter than the other babies in his peer group despite being the biggest baby at birth!

And one more thing, if you're ok with bf'ing past a year then KellyMom recommends a ratio of 75% breastmilk and 25% solids at twelve months, 50/50 at eighteen months and 25/75 at age two.

I meant she has just started walking not worrying. Ha!

@Jess1483: thank you. I do throw butter on pasta and toast when I can. She doesn't like peanut butter, but digs hummus. I've also got some 10% fat yoghurt that I mix with soups and purees for a pouch sometimes, although I didn't want to overdo it with dairy. I think now what I have in the back of my mind a bit too is potential issues processingn nutrients from foods or breastmilk because my friend was mentioning that to me the other day sort of in passing.

Anyway, all I can do now is wait until my appointment and see what the doctor says I suppose.

@petitenoisette: thanks. You're probably right that it isn't due to nursing. I am a bit worried he'll say cut back and I'll feel sad about it, but we've done it this far so I guess I'll take what I can get. I'll see what he says about her weight and what it actually is on their scale. If it isn't from what I'm trying to feed her I do wonder if her body is working properly for getting what she needs from foods/breastmilk, but would assume I would be seeing other signs of that in her appearance, mood, and energy level? I have heard that before that sometimes babies just take time to settle into their curve. She was born 2 weeks late too so she just had extra time to get big in there.

My son will be one this week. I nurse him three times per day and give him two bottles of pumped breadtmilk. When my mom watches him while I work he sometimes will still drink four bottles (4 is each) and nurse two times per day. He huge and eats a ton of food too (often more than my almost four year old).

@Mrs. Goose: As my ped put it, younger babies are often chunky just due to being properly fed but as they get older they settle more into their true curve which potentially means dropping in percentiles. So it may be that your kiddo is meant to be on the smaller side despite her large birthweight. If that's the case her growth would slow down a lot now that she's getting older (well and any baby is going to gain weight a lot slower as they get older).

I would try not to worry and just see what the doctor says/what she actually weighs. I think it's highly unlikely that any weight issue is due to nursing. Regarding solids, my LO (again, she's a peanut) really wasn't interested in solids until she was 13-14 months old. Now she's great with them but she's still the same peanut she was then. That's just the size she's meant to be.

Disclaimer: obs I am not a doctor but I just feel like people get so weird about nursing an older baby and a lot of people are unnecessarily negative about it. So I'm coming st it from the positive side

@Mrs. Goose: I feel ya, Mama. A kiddo who isn't gaining weight is stressful. Before going straight to dropping sessions (though that was what ultimately made the difference for my little guy), you might want to try high impact calories. My doc said not to give him any baby food unless I added coconut oil or olive oil or something with calories. We did a lot of toast with peanut butter or coconut oil, lots of butter, full fat yogurt, avocado, etc. Making sure that even though she isn't eating much, whatever she does eat is giving her the highest number of calories possible. One time the nurse told me "when they're like this, you give them whatever they'll eat and you put butter on it..."

Feel free to PM me...I remember this time being so stressful. Here's hoping she's doing just fine at her 1-year appointment!

I weighed her this morning and I'm pretty sure she's not gaining enough and may have lost some weight based on my home scale, which bums me out because I thought we were doing pretty good. She did have a cold this past week and wasn't eating or drinking much of anything. I have been nervous about my 1 year appointment for a few months as she dropped to a lower growth percentile. She has always only eaten a little though despite my attempts at offering breast more or offering food more throughout her life thus far. So I find myself constantly worrying about her weight and eating and have been since about 4 months...ironic because she was born so huge (9.14) and gained well for the first month or two and then gained weight, but at the lower/ minimum sort of range. Aside from that though she's generally very happy, has always slept well at night and meets all milestones, she had just started worrying.

I know worry is part of being a parent, but I didn't think this is something I'd be worrying about!

Definitely seems right. My LO only got interested in solids right around 10 months so by 11 he was still barely eating any. By 13 months, he was mostly on solids and we were able to transition him from breastmilk to whole milk.

Every baby is so different. My daughter will be 13 months next week and she still nurses 4-6 times a day. She usually nurses when she's waking up in the morning, when she takes her nap, once in the afternoon, at bedtime and once during the night. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I'm trying to move her away from nursing every few hours during the day, but I'm in no hurry to wean.

Unless she's losing weight, I wouldn't worry too much, however, around that age my first was losing weight and eventually his ped had me cut down on nursing (she said to stop altogether.) Once I'd cut to just one session (morning), his weight shot up, he was way more interested in solids, and we were able to keep the one nursing session until he gave it up at 19 months. (The ped did not give me that advice for DS2--it was just because of the weight loss.) If she is healthy and gaining weight (or at least maintaining), I wouldn't mess with success, but if weight gain is an issue, it's something to explore/discuss with a doctor.

My daughter is 11 months old and ebf. She does not eat very many types of solids or very much when offered. I mentioned to my mother I am breastfeeding 4 times per day and she said that was a lot. I do wake up, 10 am ish, 3:30/4 ish, and before bed around 7 and then she sleeps until 6:10 ish. She gets breakfast around 8:15, lunch at 12, a snack at 3:15 and dinner at 6.

Just wanted an idea of what others are doing/ did and if anyone had a smaller baby not interested in food who one day just started eating more! Or if dropping feedings made a difference in solids consumption?

ETA: should have read 5+ times for the poll.
