@Maysprout: Yeah, I get that, too. The research community is very very interesting and very very bizarre.

@pastemoo: Everything in research is so expensive though. I think right there's a couple reasons the research isnt done, there's no incentive for anyone to make money and funding is so focused on mechanism at a very microscopic level right now that the bigger picture is often neglected. Where I used to work there were several labs in our building basically competing with each other on the same signaling pathway and they were competing wiht many other labs. It's a weird setup

@spaniellove: I put some of the baby's rash cream on it. :P It helped a bit. I can't figure out what I ate. It's much less bad today.

@Maysprout: Yeah, I've heard that the price of breastmilk makes it extra hard to do research on it!

Allergy research is all over the place.
But I think the trend is going towards exposure to food in breast milk is good and makes the baby less likely to be allergic (even if the mom is allergic).
While some of the immune components causing your rash will be passed along in breastmilk, I haven't heard of that being able to cause a rash in baby. But there's a lot of unknowns, there's lots of breastmilk research left to explore.

Although I don't have a baby yet I've tried to read up as much as I could about BF and allergies b/c I have so many food allergies, and haven't come across anything about this. The food itself wouldn't affect your baby unless he/she coincidentally happened to also be allergic, although they can't inherit a specific allergy from you. I also haven't heard of histamine itself (which is the chemical you produce during an allergic reaction) crossing over. Are you currently taking an antihistamine like Benadryl? I hope you're feeling better soon!

@pastemoo: Man that really stinks. I think for breastfeeding you should be fine! Hope you figure it out soon.

@Thehistoryofus: I don't know what I'm suddenly allergic to. I just know I'm all covered in rash--hasn't happened since the last time I was allergic to a food (I tested it and it's not that same food).
Looks like LO has no skin reaction so that's a good start...

Thanks for responding! I hope to figure this one out soon.

Hmm Not sure.

So for example, you suddenly are allergic to seafood?
- Obviously, the mom shouldn't' eat seafood anymore
- I don't think the reaction would hurt the breastfed baby since food poisoning doesn't hurt the baby unless mom is REALLY sick (like in the hospital)
- I don't think the baby will necessarily have the allergy to seafood

Alright parents... I have searched and read and all I can find answers to is *taking allergy medication* or *baby* showing allergies...

What if mom develops a food allergy (coincidentally mom is still breastfeeding baby)?

I know you are never supposed to eat foods you are allergic to but what if you develop a new allergy?

Can the baby be affected by either the food or the chemical's mom's body produces in response to it?
