You can buy the alcohol test strips from Target if you are worried. I have PLENTY of milk, so I dump if it's been less than 3 hours since I finished my drink. I also had my first drink pretty soon after getting home, but it was a little disappointing because I got so tired, it made it hard to get up to pump again!

@mrskc: Thanks for the info!! I'm sooooo looking forward to wine - I didn't realize how much I would miss it! I've taken to drinking some raspberry gingerale in a wine glass and pretending, haha. It sort of works, but is definitely not the same!

Like you I was dying to have a glass of wine by the end of pregnancy. I was sooo close to having one while pregnant, but didn't do it.

I didn't have a glass until around 4 weeks pp. I just didn't feel like it before that. I'll usually have 1-2 glasses after he goes to bed. I've never pumped and dumped.

H's ped said that a glass of wine can help with letdown. He said just don't drink a whole bottle and then feed. So 2 is my max to feed. Anything more and I pump and dump.

Her bedtime is 10p though and she sleeps until 5, so I don't worry about it after 10p!

@Bookworm: haha, thank you!!! I'm so looking forward to having a drink!!!

@pastemoo: Love this!!! I'm tempting to have some smuggle in a bottle of wine TO the hospital so I can have a drink as soon as the baby's out - but maybe that's a bit lushy? :)

@autumn865: Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out!

@Smurfette: Really! Beer, you say? I'm not a huge beer fan, but I have had a couple stouts that taste like coffee, so maybe those would work?

At our labor and delivery class, she said that you are fine to have a glass right after feeding before the next feeding. Like the PP, I figure if I am safe to drive then ok to feed.

The lady also told us to have a beer since it has iron in it and that is good for the baby. Who knew?

I haven't drank anything either at 35 weeks and I really want something once baby is here!!

Check out Kelly Mom she has some good info. Personally I haven't had a drink because I wasn't a big drinker before pregnancy and baby so it really isn't a big change for me.

My policy is to never nurse when I feel any effect from alcohol. Since I drink about 5 times a year, and almost never enough to feel it, this isn't hard. But the other night I had a bit at a party, and felt a little silly for a bit. All of my family was there, along with my daughter, and I wouldn't have nursed her right then had she asked. Thankfully she didn't.

I don't think I drank at all the first couple of weeks, but once I started pumping a bit, I'd have a glass of wine right after feeding and if LO needed a feed before three hours had passed, I'd give her some pumped milk. I don't know why I was so paranoid about it, especially as I did have he odd glass of wine whilst pregnant!

Now at 7.5 months, I don't worry about it as much. I'll usually wait until she's gone to bed, as I know I have a long stretch before she feeds again. But then there are days like yesterday where an afternoon beer at the pub sounded so good, and I did not worry at all about LO feeding an hour later.

The day I got home from the hospital!
I will frequently have 1/2 drink without worrying about when I nursed.

More than that and I time it--to be honest though I only did that once and it was after DS went to bed. I always think I will drink more than I do,

Once LO started sleeping 5-6 straight hours at night I felt ok about having a glass of wine. I would also have a couple glasses when someone else was watching LO and giving him bottles of pumped milk. Once he started sleeping 10+ hours I'd have a few drinks and not worry.

I had a small glass of champagne the day after we got home from the hospital. I try to stick to one glass of wine every 2-3 hours, not that it's hard bc wine puts me to sleep now! After he goes to sleep, when I know I have about 7-8 hours until he will eat again, I'll have up to 2 drinks, either cocktails or wine. I've never had to pump and dump.

Eta that the best time to drink. Is actually while you're nursing!

Yes a glass (and my doctor actually told me 2) and your milk will be fine. Any more than that I would dump! And of course there are strips you can buy to test, but I don't know how accurate they actually are?

I didn't really drink while BF (since giving birth I've had one shot and one drink, both at night). I went to a LC at 2 weeks postpartum though and she gave us some general information. She told me that if I'm sober enough to drive, I'm sober enough to BF (as in, if I would get behind the wheel of a car and it would be legal and safe, I'm fine).

Edit: I meant to add that my first drink (the shot) was about 3 weeks postpartum. The drink was recently. I haven't missed drinking as much as I thought I would though.

I had my first glass of wine the first week she was born. My rule is if you're okay to drive you're okay to nurse. I never have more than one or two drinks a night, and I've never done a pump and dump.

So I know that a lot of people have the occasional glass of wine while pregnant and I don't know how I managed NOT to be one of those people, but I'm 37 weeks pregnant and haven't had any yet, so I figure I might as well just keep waiting at this point.

BUT I'm dying to have some wine!!! So my question is, for those of you that are EBF - when did you start drinking again? And how did you go about doing it?

I think I read somewhere that if you have a glass of wine right after a feeding (or pumping session) and aren't going to feed/pump again for ~3 hours, you should be good to go. Is that true? What rules do you follow for your feeding/pumping/drinking??
