I don't think it works that way either. I was EBF Fiona when our nephew visited and gave all of us his cold. My cold did not protect Fiona from hers!

This winter is going to be hard man! Stupid illnesses coming after our kids. :/

If your MIL caught it off you she shouldn't be able to re infect you as unless you have some kind of immune problem you will already be resistant to it. I'm sure the babies would have got it by now too if they were going to get it!

My husband got REALLY sick last winter with a stomach thing. Like, spend the day in the ER kind of thing, it was so bad. And at the hospital I asked about what we should do so that D didn't catch it since he was only 3m at the time. They told me he'd already been exposed and if he was going to get it he would. Both he and I managed to not get sick.

So anyways, I would think they've probably been exposed and to be safe I wouldn't let MIL hold them and would ask she wash her hands frequently. But I wouldn't ban her from coming over.

@twodoghouse: I just read that the norovirus is still contagious for a few days after symptoms are gone, so I'd probably ask her to wait another day or two. I wouldn't trust breastfeeding alone though. When we got it C had it first then gave t to me then Dh. It was not fun.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Thank you for the good thoughts for my sister! It's very much appreciated. So far they are doing ok and have alerted the dr and nurses, so I'm hoping they stay healthy.

Hmm, it seems like there's a lot of variation in answers! DH and I decided we'd feel more comfortable if MIL did not visit today just in case. I *think* she will agree that it's better safe than sorry when it comes to the health of our kids. However she did share her cold with them a couple weeks ago by coughing all over them at our house one day, so it's hard to say.

Hmm I think it would depend on the situation but I wouldn't count on bfing to protect them, my DS caught every cold I ever had when bfing!

I wouldn't let her come. If need be, call your ped to check (he or she will give you a number of hours symptom free MIL needs to be) and then pull the "sorry, doctor's rules" card.

Your MIL is contagious for at least 3 days after feeling better. I wouldn't want to chance them having MORE exposure to the virus and potentially catching it.

I am still breastfeeding the twins and I have found that when sickness goes around the house theirs is less severe but they still get sick. They share everything and everything goes in their mouth so they give it to each other. But, we don't pass it back/forth so to say. I am not a doctor/lactation specialist this is all observation.
My "rule" is 36 hours with no fever & diminished symptoms feel free to come around but wash your hands when you arrive. I also feel that since my kids are not in daycare, I want to expose them to germs and build up their immunity. Then we just wash hands/faces a lot. If they are going to get sick, they will get sick.

So a week ago I came down with the stomach flu. DH had had it earlier in the week and miraculously our kids didn't get it from either one of us. My fever broke on Friday night and Saturday I was feeling fine, just tired. MIL was over Thursday (before I got sick) and Sunday (after I got sick). She and FIL got sick this past week. FIL is still not feeling well, but MIL says she feels fine and would like to come over today. They were babysitting our dog this week so she's planning on bringing him back.

I'm nervous that having MIL come over could potentially get our kids sick or reinfect DH and me. She and DH think since I am breastfeeding the kids will have already received my immunity to this bug and can't get sick. I know breastfeeding provides a lot of immunological benefits, but is that really how it works? They have gotten a cold from me before, so obviously my antibodies didn't protect them then. So what would you do? Take a chance with the flu or ask MIL not to come?

As an aside for those who are FB or IG friends... So my sister had her babies on Wednesday. We were with her ILs and my parents on Tuesday and Wednesday... And yesterday her ILs got sick and this morning my parents got sick. I feel terrible and we are hoping so hard that she, her DH and the babies stay healthy!
