1) I always pump both sides!

2) This depends on your goal. If you're trying to build up a large stash or increase your supply, I'd pump after every nursing session (or at least the ones in the morning/afternoon). But if you're just trying to slowly build a stash for emergencies, I'd just pump once a day.

3) I always freeze in 2 oz increments, so I'll combine pumps if I have to make up a freezer bag.

1) do you pump the other side while nursing on one side? Or do you pump the same side you nursed on after they finish?
i waited until after nursing to pump, and pumped both sides (this was during maternity leave, and i was trying to increase my supply, as well as build a freezer stash)

2) do you pump every time you nurse?
at the beginning, yes i pumped almost every time. this was a huge pain in the ass. i did it for about the first month until i realized that my boobs were pornographic and i had a major oversupply. then i slowed down to about twice a day.

3) if you only pump small amounts (esp if you pump on the side you nursed on after it's mostly empty) do you use a whole freezer milk bag for just an ounce or so, or do you try to consolidate multiple pumpings into one bag?
i would consolidate. i would put however many ounces into a bottle and put it in the refrigerator. after the next pumping, i filled the bottle with the freshly pumped milk until i got 5-6 oz. i didn't have any problems adding freshly pumped milk to refrigerated milk (i did not try adding fresh or refrigerated milk to frozen milk).

1) do you pump the other side while nursing on one side? Or do you pump the same side you nursed on after they finish?
** I never could master the pump & nurse... I would just pump both after

2) do you pump every time you nurse?
** Depends how badly you want to up your supply/build a stash! When I was home I didn't really b/c I was lazy!

3) if you only pump small amounts (esp if you pump on the side you nursed on after it's mostly empty) do you use a whole freezer milk bag for just an ounce or so, or do you try to consolidate multiple pumpings into one bag?
** Consolidate one or two day's pumping into one bag. Ok to mix as long as milk is the same temp

With my first I would feed him one side in the morning and then pump the other and once his schedule git pretty regular I knew I could pump both breasts about an hour after the first feeding and still have enough time to refill by when he woke up. I saved my milk in the bags no matter how much, however when I pumped at work I'd just pump into the same bottle all day and then bag it at the end.

It depends on your situation and goals. I pumped a lot early on because I had low milk supply coupled with a tiny baby who lost too much weight. Pumping helped to bring in my milk and then to increase my supply, as well as make sure she was getting the milk she needed at each feeding. Now at 10 months I pump every evening and a few mornings a week. These pumping sessions usually take the place of a feeding and DH uses the milk pumped to feed her a few mornings a week.

As far as when/how, I started out pumping about ten minutes after each nursing session. Later I switched to pumping on once side when she nursed on the other. I would switch off which side was pumped each time.

Finally, you should know that most people have more milk in the mornings and less at night. For example, when I pump in the morning I get easily 3x the amount I get when I pump at night.

@ShootingStar: I knew this even when I froze my milk, I just didn't think I had this problem at the time. By the time I figured out it was an issue I was pregnant and didn't have enough supply to pump anyway

@mrsrugbee: I think if you scald it, it'll remove the soapy taste?

I could never figure out when to pump either. In retrospect, I'd probably pump during nap time, maybe an hour after the last feed. I could never figure out feeding and timing though - I'd feed him to go to sleep, I'd feed him when he woke up, and pretty much every time he cried.

I pump and nurse. I got started when we were at the hospital because T was dehydrated and it's what the nurses had me do so I could monitor intake.

I don't think the suction is great when I pump on one side. Plus I like cross craft and cuddle time. So I pump after my first feed where I'm up for the day and after my last feed before we go to bed. I don't have supply issues so I find this really easy since I'm already in nursing mode and the milk has already been moving. But I get about 6-7 oz each time I pump. As time went on I got much more. I started by pumping after every feed and sometimes would only get an oz. so I skipped the MOTN feed, then went down to 5, then 3 now 2 and I'm getting close to the same amount. But I'm working with a LC.

I guess it depends what your goals are. I feed T about 9 oz a day but will start cutting it down to one bottle now that she's gaining. So I may cut down to one pump or keep pumping to donate.

Long answer :)

Another thing I had to learn from experience... Sometimes stashing milk can be a big waste of time. I never had a lipase problem early on so I ended up stashing away LITRES of milk but never used them cause DD was nursing. Turns out my milk only lasts a couple of months in the freezer before being soapy. So I have tons if milk in the freezer that DD won't drink but I can't bring myself to toss. :-/

J nurses on one side and I pump both sides immediately after his first morning feed. I have the most milk at that time. I've been pumping at that time every day so my body is used to making extra milk then. I store it in 6 oz bags so I store it in the fridge and combine two days if I need to. If you only want to give the occasional bottle then you might want to store in smaller increments.

Agree with @mrsrugbee: that it depends on your goal.

I am a sahm and I just wanted to build up enough freezer stash to be able to use a bag when I needed it (going out once in a blue moon, easier to bottle feed than nurse while we are somewhere). So once or twice a week or so, I would pump about an hour after I nursed in the morning, when she was down for a morning nap. i usually took a shower as soon as I put her down, then pumped, since the hot water is supposed to help. This wouldn't build up a huge supply but it was enough for the one off times j needed it.

It depends on your goal. I was pumping early on just cause I was super engorged when DD would only drink one side. I ended up with a crazy oversupply. Foremilk for days... Gassy forest green poop...

If your building a stash, I'd suggest pumping after baby goes to sleep for the night. 3-4hrs after your last feed. You'll get less milk but it is less likely to give you crazy oversupply if baby is STTN.

To build supply, pump after or in between feeds. Be cautious though. If you do this regularly you will NEED to keep doing it or your boobs will explode.

I am trying to pump twice a day to get some stored up. I have had the same questions you do! There are so many different things tat work for different people. I regularly pump after he goes to sleep for his first night sleep. I pump about 30 or 40 minutes after I put him down and get about 3oz total. I am trying to also pump in the morning, but he has been fussy and I am tired to nursing or sleeping keep happening instead. I think I need to be more persistent with that one even if it's short.

I guess what I am trying to say is try a bunch of things until you find what works for your body and your baby!

Kellymom.com is a great resource. Here's an article on nursing/pumping. http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/pumping/pumping-while-nursing/

And here's a list of articles she has on pumping in general: http://kellymom.com/category/bf/pumpingmoms/pumping/

As I'm reading through these, I don't think they specifically answer your questions. But when I was nursing, I would let my LO eat from both sides and pump after to get anything that was left. And yes, I would just put whatever I got into one bag... but I was a cow and I'd pump about 6 oz (total) after nursing, so the bag was mostly full.

Need some advice in how to include pumping while breastfeeding, I tried searching the archives but didn't find exactly what I'm wondering..

1) do you pump the other side while nursing on one side? Or do you pump the same side you nursed on after they finish?

2) do you pump every time you nurse?

3) if you only pump small amounts (esp if you pump on the side you nursed on after it's mostly empty) do you use a whole freezer milk bag for just an ounce or so, or do you try to consolidate multiple pumpings into one bag?

Any other advice is appreciated. I'm a SAHM so I don't need to pump at work.
