I went back at 8 weeks, but struggled with supply initially because he had a tongue tie. I took Fenugreek and pumped for 10 minutes after he nursed while on maternity leave to build a little stash to start with (I had 75 oz in the freezer when I started work. I was able to make it to a week shy of 6 months before I had to start supplementing. He started STTN when I went back to work and I didn't wake up in the middle of the night to pump or anything like that and I was still able to keep up. At the 6 month mark, I started supplementing with 1 bottle of formula/day 5/6 were still BM until 10 months (now) and my supply has taken a real dip so I'm pretty much weaning at this point. I am going to try to at least nurse him in the morning until we reach a year, but we'll see if my girls are going to cooperate with that!

Make sure you have a hospital grade double pump to use at work, if you can, at least in the beginning.

Is there anyway you can fit in extra pumping sessions at work in the beginning? Can you pump 4x while you are away from the baby? Once you feel confident your supply is in you can drop down to 3x a day at work.

@DpeachLu: I had to go back to work early also. Start pumping now! I would pump after any feeds that occurred between midnight and 8am, because I would normally make twice as much milk as LO neededmy LC said that is when your hormones are the highest. I built up a little stash, then once I went back to work, I would still pump at some point around midnight and also pump first thing when I got to work, in addition to pumping 2-3 times through the day.

You might consider renting a hospital grade pump until your supply is well established. Consumer electric pumps are not designed to boost or establish milk supply, just to continue an already established supply. Many women do just fine with a consumer electric in a situation like yours, but if you are at all worried or if you don't feel like your pump is working the best for you and you feel you need to try to increase your supply, I would recommend hospital-grade. Do some research into supplements like Motherlove More Milk Plus, Fenugreek, etc. I think it's better to have something on hand, or at least know what's out there and where to get some, *just in case.* Milkies Milk Savers are great if you leak-- then you don't waste any. You'll do just fine.

My reply got delete but congrats on your little one and you can definitely do it! Enjoy your time now, get into it, collect any milk you can (I had a milkie that collected the extra from the other side) and start pumping at least two weeks before you go back to get a stash going. Check out Kelly mom and the other pumping threads on here to get ideas on logistics and routines!

I think you can totally make it work if you are committed to it. When I returned at 12 weeks I was having to pump about four times to get enough milk. Once I got into a good routine I just did three times to get her the three bottles she needed.

So she'll be six weeks old or older? I feel like I didn't get into a great groove until six weeks. When I went back to work, I pumped a lot initially until we had a great routine.

I went back to work at 8 weeks. I started nurse one side-pump the other about 2 weeks before I went back to work so I could build a little bit of a freezer stash. That got me through a month of daycare before I depleted my freezer stash and then I pumped 3x while at work.

I am no expert but I would just make sure you pump every time she gets a bottle at day care. I went back last week, 12 weeks, and I pump three times, when she gets a bottle. So far I can pump enough for her bottles and a little extra. In order to establish supply before you go back just nurse and pump as much as you can.

Congrats in your new girl!!!!!

Hello bee's. I just welcomed a new baby girl into the world this past Monday. June 3rd. We have been breastfeeding since then. It's been hard and stressful but already feeling a tad bit better. I also have a 14 month old that was given breast milk for only three weeks and always supplemented with formula. This is why this time I am extremely excited and feel blessed to be able to be breastfeeding without any formula.

However my big concern/stress is I go back to work in six weeks (five weeks now) which makes me wonder how I will be able to continue breastfeeding. I will be at work from 8 to 5pm :-(. They do have a lactation room but at 6 weeks I don't feel my milk will be fully established to keep it going with only pumping and breastfeeding for a short part of the night.

I haven't started pumping now. Although I do own a medela pump.

Any tips?
Anyone been in this situation? How long we're you able to not have to use formula?
