We did around 8 months, I had been worried too, but had no problems and wish we had tried it sooner. We just slowed down on giving bottled pumped milk, started using the sippy more and had an effortless experience in getting rid of the bottle.

My favorites are the Avent sippies.

We started with just using the sippy cup for water at mealtimes. I didn't breastfeed, so I can't comment on the effects, but I would guess that if you don't put milk in the sippy to start off with, then your baby will still know that milk comes from breastfeeding only.

We also use the zoli straw cup...we started around 6 months with water. Has not affected breastfeeding at all--he needs to suck to get the water out so it's not like it just flows right out for him. I also agree that when you start solids you should start water to help with constipation (no fun for anyone!).

We introduced a straw cup at 6 months when we started solids. It didn't negatively affect breastfeeding at all. Took her 2 days to get the hang of using the straw and she knew it was for water and not milk.

If you are concerned, you could go straight to an open cup or a straw cup at meal times...quite common in Europe.

@MamaMoose: have you started solids? because once you start solids you need a sippy cup to offer water

If you breastfeed when did/do you plan on introducing a sippy cup? M is almost six months and I actually think she could do pretty well with a sippy cup. But I worry because the flow is so fast it might negatively affect breastfeeding. I'm not sure there is any reason to introduce a sippy cup at this point... But please tell me if there is!
