wow I'm sorry they're being so discouraging - especially when breastfeeding is well-known for its advantages. When I started breastfeeding I wasn't worried if Lo had to take formula if I couldn't produce milk or had other issues but I wanted to try - Mil tried blackmailing me saying she'd be disappointed if I didn't make it until 6 months of breastfeeding. You gotta do whats right for you and your baby!

I'm sorry you are going through this but thankfully you have your mom as a support system. As previous posters mentioned arm your self with a good support network and accurate information. There is a lot of misinformation out there about breastfeeding that people will feel free to tell you. It is your decision to make of what you feel is best. There are situations where breastfeeding does not work out for whatever reason and those mothers are not bad mothers. But if you are willing to work through the difficult points I don't know why anyone would discourage you wanting to breastfeed!

I didn't have it happen to me but I've watched it happen to others. One of my friend's kids lost about 5% of his birth weight a couple days after birth, which is in the fine range, and he started to gain it back after that. But her mom, who is very against breastfeeding, told her she was trying to starve her baby by breastfeeding and every time the baby cried told her daughter she wasn't making enough milk and was being cruel by trying to nurse. So even though the baby had passed his birth weight by over a pound at the 2 week mark, the girl stopped breastfeeding because her mom convinced her she had no supply and was hurting her son.

That stinks!! I got alot of discouragement for going for my vbac... many tried to scare me out of it by giving me misinformation & horror stories they'd heard from some friend of a friends sisters friend, etc. Thankfully I knew my stuff and was able to let most of it roll of my back... I also got my successful vbac!

If you want to breastfeed then do all the research you can, get a good support system (la leche league meetings are great even while expecting), find a good IBCLC, and take the discouraging misinformation from others and let it roll off your back. Yes, breastfeeding is trying and can be very difficult (we had alot of feeding issues the first 3-5 months) BUT it is doable and there is no reason for you to go into it thinking you can't do it, regardless of someone else's experience!!

My mom told me that when she nursed my brother, in 1975, BF was just coming round the horn from being unpopular. She said that when my Grandmother had babies (aka my aunts, uncle, and mom) that it was en vogue to formula feed. It was encouraged. So maybe that is where your Grandma and Aunt are coming from?
Regardless, I'm sorry you have to deal with that, it really sucks.

That really is terrible that people are so discouraging of it! Regardless of what some believe, it truly is the best food you can give your baby, so I really don't understand why people are trying to dissuade you from trying it! Don't let them discourage you - they may have had a bad experience but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. I'm sorry you have to deal with negativity, but hopefully your mom can tell them to back off and let you do what you want with your child, free of judgment....especially when it is what is best for your baby!

When it comes to babies, everyone's got an opinion! It's totally frustrating but pay them no mind!
Until your LO is here its hard to know how breastfeeding will go. But if its something you want to do, research, go to classes, sign up for LLL meetings, and find a good LC in your area. Make a plan to see one after you have your LO!
Whatever happens, ignore those that try to hold you back!!!

That's awful. I hate how unsupportive some people are of breastfeeding, especially in this day in age where it should be commonly known how important and wonderful breastfeeding is. I'm sorry you have to deal with this!

Has anyone else gotten a lot of discouragement when it comes to breastfeeding?

My mom was asked by my grandma and my aunt if I'd breastfeed and my mo said yes. They both jumped all over her, saying that I wouldn't be able to, that they couldn't, it's really hard, etc. and told my mom that she needed to tell me to not breastfeed, that formula was better and easier. When my mom relayed this conversation, we were both pretty annoyed with their attitudes. My mom breastfed both of us kiddos without any issues and encouraged me to do the same.

In another situation, I had an acquaintance ask and I was pretty vague, saying I hadnt decided and was still kicking around my options. She was adamant about not breastfeeding, saying that it was awful and stressful and she hated that her husband couldn't feed their LO and that I'd be smart to go the formula route so everyone else could feed my baby for me.

I find it incredibly rude how people go out of their way to discourage breastfeeding. I never bring it up and lately I've been noncommittal about it, but it hasn't helped.

I don't understand why there's such negativity or even why people care what I am or am not going to do with my boobies!
