My goal is a year. We are 16 weeks in and I pump 1x a day. I WOH/WAH part time- but will SAH full time come October and I finish my current photography season.

If all goes well at a year I could see going longer, but I would not call it a goal. My Mom BF me till I was 18 mo, it would be nice to get that far if it's working for everyone.

I don't really have goals. I'd like to make it to 2 years with Zuma and then maybe try to stop? It might be hard to wean her if Pi is still nursing. I honestly need to think about this more!

My first goal was 6 months and we made it to 15 months. I had a 3 day work trip so I made the decision to wean him and he didn't seem to miss it at all. My goal for the next child is at least a year and maybe longer! We'll see what happens.

For LO #1, my "dream" goal was 2 years, but my realistic goal was 12 months. We made it to 15 months.

For LO #2, my dream goal was 18 months, realistic goal was 12 months. Made it to 12ish months.\

I wanted to not spend $$ on formula and I wanted to provide BM for as long as it was convenient for me and the baby. I telecommute and work from home everyday, so I was very lucky with my working arrangements. I pumped a LOT with LO #1 and actually donated 500+ ounces to a friend. With LO #2, I didn't pump at all.

With #1 I set short term goals of 6, 9 and 12m. We ended up breastfeeding till she was 25m. I was a FT WOHM.
With #2 I was unemployed and SAHM till she was about 3 -4 months? I worked full time for about 3 months and now I'm down to one day a week. She's almost 10m and right now I have a pumping goal of 12m. Then milk while at daycare and I will nurse till either I'm pregnant or she self weans. Or she's 2; whichever comes earlier. :P

With LO1 my goal was a year. I quit nursing on the side with my inverted nipple at 10 weeks. I continued nursing on the other side until 15 months including pumping until 13 months.

With LO2 my goal was just to try the inverted side again with as much help as I could throw at it (shells, shields, everter). I'm 10 days in now and thinking I can extend the goal to one month. My general goal is one year again. I think months of pumping at work may be more difficult for me this time.

My goal was 12 months with LO1, but we had lots of issues caused by tongue tie, and I had no milk left at 8.5 months. With LO2, I wanted to make it at least as long, and made it almost 16 months when she self-weaned!

i feel like with DD1, my goal was 1 year, but i was open to up to 2 and then once we started, i just had little goals to make it more manageable. we weaned at 18.5 months. this go around, i'm going to assume 1 year, and open to longer but i should probably make little goals again because each kid is different!

@catlady: totally with you on trying to feel less guilty about FF #2! we tried to introduce formula way too late and she wouldn't take it.

my goal with #1 was 6 months. I WOH, and pumping was way easier than i expected, so i pumped up to a year and then stopped pumping but breastfed until 18 months. I BF wayyy longer than i ever expected, and am super happy with the way it went as well as the way it ended, but the most important lesson I took from it was that I should go with the flow and do what feels right. So i may set a soft goal of 6 months with #2, but i'm gonna try really hard not to put pressure on myself to make it there. i want to be just as happy with my experience with #2 no matter how long or short it is.

We're 5.5 weeks in and my current goal is to EBF through maternity leave (15 weeks). Then I'll see how things go with pumping at work. I'd love to make it to 6 months, but I'm not going to stress myself out if it doesn't work. My first was formula fed after 6 weeks and is amazing.

I have no expectations or goals for BFing. I guess my "goal" is to try, but I have no strong feelings between breastfeeding or formula, so it doesn't makes sense for me to set any long-term goals. I don't want to feel guilty if I don't meet my self-imposed goal.

Original goal was 1 year. My current goal is 2 years, which is four months away. Little guy shows no signs of wanting to drop his only nursing session but honestly I'm about 95% over it at this point. I'm traveling without him right before his 2nd birthday and am hoping to wean them.
I work out of home and pumping was not fun. I quit that at 11 months and it made BFing seem so much easier once it didn't include pumping.

My short term goal is 3 months, which is when I think the majority of the medical benefits are, and when I'll be going back to work. Then we'll see how pumping goes and my long term goal is a year, but I've told anyone that will listen that I won't feel any guilt if it's too hard and I decide to supplement or go with formula.

For me, it's not worth being miserable if things aren't going well. I think it helps that I watched a friend make herself absolutely miserable trying to make it to 6 months exclusively breastfeeding when she hated it and I told my husband - I'm not doing that! It's not worth it!

That being said, I've already read a book about breastfeeding and a bunch of articles and I'm taking a breastfeeding class, so I'm certainly going to give it a good go!

@lovehoneybee: I have similar goals. We made it to 3 months, now I have my eyes on 6 months, then 9 months. Ultimate goal is 12 months. I WOH full-time and I hate pumping. That is definately a factor. However, DD was on fortified breastmilk (due to low weight, increased her calorie intake by 4 calories/ounce by adding powdered formula) for 2 weeks recently and it did not go well. That is increased motivation to continue providing her with what works.

My goal was to make it to a year and then reevaluate. We're still breastfeeding at 21 months.

I think that I will be more open to formula next time, especially if I have the supply issues again. My supply tanked at 6 months, right before my period came back, and it was a struggle to make enough between ovulation and my period. By 10 months, I was relying on freezer stash a lot and at 11 months we started mixing WCM with BM to make full bottles and transition.

My goal with C was to make it to 1, then see how it went from there. She ended up self weaning at 20 months, which is a lot longer than I had expected but it worked for us. I definitely think I would have wanted to stop sooner if I was pumping though.

My goal is the same for this one, and I will still be SAH. A friend asked me if I felt obligated to BF this one as long as I did for C, but I don't. I hope we get to a ear and then when the baby is ready, it self weans like C did.

My goal was 2 weeks, then 6 weeks, the. 6 months, then 1 year. My goal with pumping was to try it, then to get through last summer, then last December, then spring break, which was 6 weeks before her first birthday (I had freezer stash to get us to one). There were rough days, but we made it through. We weaned 2 weeks ago at 14 months, when I went away for 10 days. Not sure if we would have weaned otherwise, and I'm still a little sad about it, but we made it

Pumping was emotionally challenging for me, and I continually had to remind myself that my pumping output was in no way a reflection of my value/worth/success as a mother. I obsessed over every ounce and worked like crazy to produce as much as I could. In the end, this led to a massive oversupply, but I still worried. I pump weaned early, because I needed to get that emotional stumbling block out of my life.

Hugs. It's so hard to know what to do. I didn't think I would love or be good at BFing, and when it turned out that I both loved and was good at it, I hung on to it for dear life. Now that we're done, I am realizing that I was pretty intense for a long time. I hope next time to be a bit more relaxed, even if that means less milk. I think that will be healthier for us both.

My goals were the same as yours (a long term one and short term ones) and we're still going strong at almost 21 months now, which surprised me. I WOH and I admit the first year (with pumping) was difficult. However, the harder thing for me was the elimination diet, which I was on for close to a year for LO's MSPI/FPIES.

We are planning to TTC #2 soon and I already know that I do not think I will be able to handle another full year of elimination diet, so I think I will have to be flexible with my goals for BFing #2. I would like to make it to at least 12 months again if I can, but I have already agreed with myself and DH that if we have to FF #2, I will do it and try to feel as little guilt as possible. Easier said than done though!
