As an American having lived in Europe, I noticed that people really don't give a second look to anyone, no matter what they are doing (at least that was my experience). Also, the European view towards nudity is totally different, they have shared changing rooms at most resorts and they are big on the Irish/Roman baths where both males and females are fully nude. So, feed your baby where you need to. Chances are no one will even notice!

In Switzerland it's not a big deal at all. Even in the middle of a restaurant or something.

And also   So happy for you!

I'm British but live in Canada, and have nursed here without a cover all the time with no problem. When I visited the UK, my sisters of all people were like, "ew! I don't want to see" but I nursed a lot in a hospital while visiting my gran and everyone was fine. My SILs and BILs were all a little shy around me nursing too. In Spain, I did feel a bit more as though I should at least use a cover (I didn't, but did take myself off out of the way a bit more) but I think I was a bit more worried about DH's rather conservative family there, and how they might feel, and aware of the language barrier between us meaning we might not be able to communicate about it if anyone did feel uncomfortable. I think if I was about and about in Spain away from family, I wouldn't have felt that way.
So I think, after typing all that out, I feel that a the UK and SPain are nursing friendly but my family are weird :silly:

Nursing a newborn no one will blink. But I think a lot of people stop nursing when maternity leave ends so when I went with my 6 month old, I got a few oh wow you're still nursing. When I went before with my first daughter at 11 months people were umm....amazed? That I was still nursing, def expressed a lot of curiosity that I was still nursing, it was phrased positively but sounded skeptical of it being a good idea. This was more family and friends expressing this but in France nursing past 3 or 4 months seems to be thought of as weird.

There's actually a law here in Scotland that makes it illegal for anyone to prevent a mother from breastfeeding in public & licensed places.

I've never actually seen many women breastfeeding in public but perhaps I just never noticed! Nobody has batted an eyelid when I've done it, anyway.

I live in the UK but recently moved over from Australia. I have had absolutely zero issues BF'ing in public - it is very widely accepted in both places. Australia has really good supports for BF'ing and fairly high rates of babies being BF, so there was never so much as a raised eyebrow when I would nurse either of my babies in public without a cover.

I also have had no issues with nursing either of my babies in the UK. I've even nursed my DD whilst standing in the aisle of packed train heading into London during the morning rush hour. No one took any notice whatsoever, other than a few nice gentlemen who practically tripped over themselves to offer me their seat.

Bottom line, it is widely accepted and encouraged in both the UK and Australia!

I live in Austria and also spend a lot of time in France. Nursing in public is absolutely not a problem! We've traveled to a number of other European countries while I nursed my two LOs and it has never been an issue. I would actually be surprised if you had a negative experience here.

Hi! I'm in the UK and I think its pretty well accepted here. Its actually illegal to advertise or discount formula here - which emphasises how "pro-BF" the country is. Of course, you will always get the odd moron who might make a comment or complain in a restaurant that your boobs are putting him off his fish and chips but they're the exception not the rule.

So, this is just hypothetical (since I'm only 24weeks with our first AND I'm not sure how old LO will be when we travel abroad next)...but does anyone have any input about BFing in public abroad, particularly in Europe?

How acceptable BFing in public is in the US seems to be very dependent on region and other specifics. In your estimation/experience, is it more or less acceptable in the UK, Central Europe, Southern Europe, etc? I'd also love to hear from our Australian bees!

Any thoughts or tips? Thanks in advance!
