@Mrs. Bee: Did this ever get one of those "Extra Extra" posts? I don't remember seeing it, but I remember referring to it a LOT when I was nursing/pumping!

How do you think you figure out your magic number if your LO is a cluster feeder? I mean if I took the concept of the "magic number" I would probably be at 12+!

This is an awesome article! I'm sharing far and wide with all the breastfeeding moms I know who are returning to work. I want to breastfeed for at least a year, so now I know what I have to do. I go back to work in July so now I know my magic number is 8 or 9.

Thank you so much for posting this - this makes a lot of sense, and I now see why I'm not producing enough for my LO. I was feeding her 8x/day when I was on maternity leave and now I've only been feeding/pumping 6 times a day so I know I need to really bump that up.

Great article! My magic number would have been around 8 or 9 and by 8 months I was struggling with production no matter what I did but I was only feeding/pumping a total of 5 or 6 times. I wish I had seen that article before. So often you see others say how they can pump XX number of ounces per time or only need to pump XX times per day during a work week and I always was a little self conscious that I had to work so hard just to get close to those numbers. It helps to see some validation that everyone is different and the storage capacity of a breast can vary so greatly from woman to woman, no matter the breast size.

@Mrs. Bee: I think that would be great! It has really helped when the world (aka internet) is full of resources about just letting baby nurse away which isn't always possible due to many supply/health/work issues that so many women face.

I didn't read much on breastfeeding before my daughter was born, but this one article has helped SO much in understanding about how milk is produced and how I can help my supply.

that was really interesting! i think we may feature it in an extra extra post. :)

when i was pumping exclusively with charlie, my magic number was 5 times a day. it was enough for him plus a little extra. i'm producing less with olive, but enough. i pump 4 times a day and nurse in the middle of the night.

Thanks, as someone who struggled with supply issues when I returned to work and pumping at 8w this will be helpful this time around.

This was a really helpful article for me and thought I would share with others learning about breastfeeding. It talks about how to determine how many times to nurse/pump to get needed output and how it varies across women.
