One thing I wold recommend is a good probiotic for baby if you notice he is really gassy/fussy over the next few months. Sometimes when they don't get enough colostrum they don't get a as much goodgut bacteria. I found it helped my little guys soooo much with his tummy troubles. I was just reading along.</p> <p>T was in the PICU at 3 days due to dehydration. Scary. My milk came in when we got to the ER- so we did not end up supplementing-they got me pumping in the hospital.</p> <p>Per our LC from the PICU I fed her at the breast as long as she would go at least every 3 hours then gave a 30-45 ml bottle (usually DH did this) while I pumped- rinse and repeat 8 times a day for the first couple weeks. It was rough. I had 1x a week LC appointments. T was not transferring well. She did not have latch issues- she just needed to get bigger and stronger. Eventually we slowly dropped bottle feeds and pumping. We nipple shield weaned around 8 weeks. By 10 weeks things were great. Now I only pump after her first feed- about 10 oz and give her a 2 oz bottle with probiotics before bed. </p> <p>I got a scale from Target with .1 on it. I weighed her and myself then just me and did the math to get her weight (remember to convert 1/10 lb to 1/16 in oz) that helped me see an upward swing.</p> <p>She's now gaining great- and pumping gave me a bit of an oversupply so I have a big stash. Having support through this makes all the difference. We went to see an LC and did a weighted feed. He took 5 ounces! She showed me how to massage and squeeze my breasts and she gave me a bunch of loot-- reusable cooling pads, this tube thing so I can suppliment with my own milk while he feeds, nipple creams etc. He nursed for a good 30-45 min and was milk drunk.<br /> I made an appointment to fix his tongue and lip tie tomorrow-- yay!!! She said he has a shallow latch but my supply is just fine and actually pretty good considering our rocky start. So, our plan is for me to feed him as long as he will every 2-3 hours or so (using the tube thing) and then to pump for 10 minutes after.<br /> We are at the ped again to get weighed.<br /> We also have another appointment with the LC on Thursday to see how things work after fixing the tongue and lip tie.<br /> Whew!!! Hungry newborns are usually lethargic and won't nurse enthusiastically. I never changed sides - just let him finish on one side to get all the good fatty hind milk. When he is done one side, burp, change him and try the other side. Now that your milk is in I don't think you need to pump after each feed. You will call in way too much milk if you do that after every feeding! I would offer the breast every 2-3 hours minimum. Keep going for weighted feeds if that helps!
