I don't really limit anything. My LO has always had bad gas, but we just gave her gripe water in her nighttime bottle and that seemed to help it.

I still drink coffee (I need to so I don't fall asleep at work), and I drink about 2x per month (3+ drinks). I have always been a pretty "clean" eater, so I continue to watch what I eat and avoid processed foods if I can. But other than that, I eat what I normally would pre-baby.

Oh, and I'm still taking my prenatal vitamins.

@regberadaisy: Add more! Don't shrink! Tums count if you still have those around.
Or like mrsbells said, eat calcium rich foods.

Oh and with regards to the calcium I was told if possible to try and eat calcium rich foods and only use pills as a last resort, so I'm eating lots of yogurt, cheese and milk lately

Mainly I just avoid caffeine and alcohol, but these are foods I avoided anyway. I was also advised to avoid certain foods like brocolli and certain beans so the baby wouldnt be too gassy in the first few weeks. These days I eat brocolli and beans just fine, thanks to gripe water LO is doing ok with gassy foods. Gripe water really does help a lot so its worth trying

@pastemoo: I really need to! It didn't even occur to me that just BFing will lower my calcium!
I'm still finishing up my prenatals so I'm hoping the calcium in there is enough for now till I finish it up.

I pretty much eat almost anything and limit caffeine and don't drink alcohol (not a big drinker anyway!). But my oldest had dairy and soy protein allergies and my youngest may have the same so I've just started cutting out dairy. Should be another fun year! :) It's not as hard as one thinks once you get used to it. Most restaurants will accommodate allergies.

*** TAKE CALCIUM PILLS!
My NP told me to be careful with my weightloss because women lose a lot of calcium when breastfeeding. Don't "worry about that later"--take supplements.

As for diet, I took a food diary for a little while--he didn't do well with onions or eggs. He's ok with eggs now and is 2 months (11 weeks).

@regberadaisy: wow, I guess it could definitely be worse and I shouldn't complain! Hopefully things start getting better for your LO soon so you can start enjoying some of your favourite foods again!

I'm jealous of those of you who haven't had any issues! I may start introducing a bit of dairy again in a couple of weeks and hopefully she can tolerate it - we shall see!

I haven't changed my diet at all besides not drinking alcohol, but I got used to that during pregnancy and don't really miss it. Caffeine makes me sick, so no worries with that one. We've been lucky in that LO hasn't had any issues.

@cvbee: I had to do the same thing with LO for gas around that time as well but at 3 months she now toots like a pro.

I didn't change my diet.

I did have to help my LO with gas for a couple weeks, at about the age you are at. I would to 'bicycle legs' for him several times a day and it seemed pretty effective. After a while, he was able to just wiggle his body around himself and get out his toots.

Wow! I knew there was a possibility that I still couldn't have caffeine and such. Luckily our LO hasn't been sensitive to anything like that so I haven't had to give anything up. Now that shes older I have even allowed myself a glass of wine here or there.

@c.sassy: I miss cheese sooo much!! I love melted cheese on my subs, cheese on my sandwich, cheese on my pizza!! Pizza w/o cheese is just not the same. :(

Last week we had pizza and I had two small bites of the pizza w/cheese before I peeled it off. It was soooo euphoric but I felt so guilty!!

Luckily, LO hasn't been terribly sensitive to the foods I eat, but I did drastically reduce my dairy intake as I noticed it gave her the most trouble. I started eating a little more around 10-11 weeks, and she seems to be tolerating it pretty well. I can't go overboard, but it's nice to have some of my cheese back!

Yea, I knew I wouldn't have full reign of my diet after delivery but I didn't realize how much would affect her as well. I pretty much cut out everything that causes gassiness and have only recently started eating little amounts of it. But generally I try to avoid everything that causes gassiness.

And I'm also on a MSPI diet. I've heard that 6 months is when I can start trying to reintroducing dairy into my diet.

M is now 3 months old and I have noticed that I can have a small cup of decaf first thing in the morning and she seems fine.

The list of things I avoid are soooo long...among them anything with dairy/milk, large concentrations of soy, onions, spicy food (sad face), citrus fruits, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, corn (major sad face), wheat, etc etc

I'd forgotten eggs is a gassy food. Thanks for the reminder although we haven't been having eggs much lately due to lack of time in the morning!

I LOVE milk and miss it but recently got almond milk so I can have my cereal and calcium again!

For some reason, I always assumed that once pregnancy was over, diet restrictions became a thing of the past, within reason of course - I knew I wouldn't be able to drink 5 cups of coffee and drink a bottle of wine each night, but I had no idea how many foods out there could cause painful gas in babies!

Our 6.5 week old has had some terrible gas issues following feeds, so after close monitoring, I have discovered that dairy products are a primary culprit, as are coffee, eggs, and acidic fruit. Whilst I'm happy to cut these things out of my diet to make sure my LO doesn't suffer from gas pains, I'm still a bit shocked at just how much of an impact everyday foods can have on her tiny digestive system! I'm also a bit sad as I LOVE my morning latte, ice cream, all fruits, and raw cookie dough, amongst other things that are now on my 'no go' list. And I'm wondering how to make sure I get enough calcium in my diet, but that's a concern for a later date I guess!

For those of you who are EBF, how closely do you monitor your diet? Were you aware prior to having your LO just how much of an impact all these 'normal' foods could have on your LO? Also, did you find that you could start eating some of these foods again once your LO got a bit older and had a more mature digestive system? I've heard that around 3 months, things get a bit better but am not sure if that's just wishful thinking on my part!
