i had pain for about 6 weeks with cracked nipples and bleeding that finally led to mastitis. It was horrible! the only thing that worked for after the antibiotics cured my infection were Silverette cups that my italian friend gave to me for the soreness! they were magical and I could nurse for a year with no pain anymore!! i am planning on using them again for my next baby!

I think my nipples are quite normal. The pain comes on first latch but occasionally it stays after the initial intense pain. When that happens I try to get a better latch. My problem is that she opens her mouth really wide but then moves to a much shallower latch. Anyway, thanks for the responses

@T.H.O.U.: Exactly this. Our pediatrician even described it as "toe curling pain" that you have to count to ten over.

I said about 2-4 weeks but I don't remember the exact time it stopped hurting. What I do remember is DREADING every nursing session until it stopped hurting. Dear lord, it can be painful. I wish they discussed that in my prenatal class. No one warns you about the pain (besides the engorgement pain, but it's way more than that). I had my latch checked too and everything was great so I can only deduce that I was experiencing "normal" pain as I never had mastitis or anything. Hang in there, it does get wayyy way better!

For me it was about 4-6 weeks, then right as that pain started to go away I started to get plugged ducts and have shooting pains in one of my breasts. That lasted for several months...so it wasn't until he was 5 or 6 months old that I could nurse with no pain! Hope yours goes away quickly!

Week 7 was the turning point for me and Xander. Prior it was that toe curling pain, especially when he latched on. I almost quit at 6 weeks because it was still so painful and I would cry every time he was hungry. And then my nipples got numb and the pain stopped. Hope you hit the turning point soon.

I had intense pain for about 5-6 weeks. My nipples were visibly bruised. Gel pads, packs filled with beads in the freezer/microwave, and nipple cream were part of my routine.

Do you mean you get pain with letdown or pain when she latches on? I had an uncomfortable letdown--it felt almost like a cramp in my breast. That lasted quite a while, over a year I think. I also had insane pain with latch on, that got better when we clipped his tongue tie and over time--around 8.5 weeks it didn't hurt anymore.

I'm the odd man out - I never really got that toe curling pain everyone talks about, and often worried that BFing wasn't going well for us. I could feel letdown in one breast and not the other, and worried that I wasn't producing in one side. Now she's 3.5 months and my 'worrisome' side is doing well (and I've had 2 clogged ducts in that side), and I can now feel let down in both sides, but not every time.

I get a lightening bolt type pain in my left breast every once in awhile. It made me worry we had thrush but we didn't/don't, so all I can guess is that I'm producing...?!

I'm also new at this, so.. Maybe I'm not as in time to my body as I had hoped I was.

@T.H.O.U.: exactly this- and it is the Only time I have actually experienced literal toe curling pain. Right around four weeks it started being just uncomfortable after let down. I don't remember when it happened but by a few months or so there was no pain but it took even longer for my nipples to feel normal.

@Mrs.Lilac: Is there anything remarkable about your nipples?
I had pain the whole time I breastfed with my inverted nipple but only pain for a week or so on my regular side.

I think consensus is usually 4-6 weeks. What kind of pain level are you talking about? I would say the first ten seconds were close to toe curling pain for the first 4 or so weeks. But after that first ten seconds it should get down to just a discomfort level. After 4-6 weeks a bit more of general discomfort and then, sadly, you kinda just go numb.

I have a 3 and a half week old baby girl and we are exclusively breastfeeding. I am in quite a lot of pain with letdown but then it is generally pretty uncomfortable throughout. I have now seen 2 specialists who said my latch is good. Most mums have told me that Bf will hurt for the first few weeks, even if latch is good as nipples need to get used to it all. My whole breast feels bruised and tender as well. It's pretty miserable.

Anyway, I'm wondering how long (if at all) you felt pain while breastfeeding your first baby. Thanks in advance
