This is interesting to see! I had almost zero supply with my daughter and had to give up on breastfeeding in the end b/c formula was the only option for her to get enough food. I'm hoping that my experience will be different next time around, but I'm not holding my breath.

I had an AWFUL time breastfeeding when DD was first born!! It took me a good 6-8 weeks to really get it down & those first weeks were hard because she wouldn't latch on. I think that this baby will *hopefully* be easier since I will have more of an idea of what to do....I really really hope so!

ETA: I should add that I ended up EBF for 6 months & breastfeeding for 13 months! I love breastfeeding!

I had a lot of trouble with my first DD... Poor latch, mastitis, very low supply... She was FF after a few months because the amount of BM I would make by pumping was barely anything.

I was really worried the same would happen for 2.0, but I was also prepared not to feel as guilty if it did. I maybe also had even more motivation to make it work again the 2nd time... Anyhow, DD 2 had some problems on Days 2 and 3 with latching, but I just kept on working on it with her and she and I both learned what worked for us. Getting the latch down was pivotal and from then on my supply wasn't a problem (despite ups and downs with teething, illness, etc)... but basically, yes it went much better the second time around. So much so though that she hates bottles... We are still nursing at 14.5 months and counting!

I didn't make enough with my first child even though I was well informed about it, fed on demand, and really tried to pump out extra milk. When I went back to a full time job, I wasn't able to pump at work so I stopped completely. My first got fed 5 1/2 months and two additional weeks on frozen milk for a total of 6 months. My second, the only real different thing I did was take Fenugreek, mother's milk tea, and oatmeal cookies. I also changed my job and I'm working part time. My second just turned 7 months and she's still going on breast milk most of the time, virtually all of it freshly pumped and consumed within a day. My goal is 1 year but I'm happy that I made it this far.

I had supply issues with my first for almost three months. With my second I started pumping from day one after every nursing session even if nothing was coming out. My milk came in at day 2 (had c-section too) and it has been good since. I stopped pumping after each session once I noticed I was pumping less and less which meant he was eating more and more. This was around two weeks and I haven't touched the pump since.

I didn't have supply issues either time, but I had major latching issues and pain with my first. I was on painkillers for the 6 weeks to be able to nurse. Second time was way easier (two days on painkillers). I was more experienced and she was a better nurser. Stronger neck and a bit bigger, both of which help I think.

My SIL had a really rough time BFing her first daughter...she had a horrible latch and a low supply, and she was always in pain. The CLCs at her hospital had left for the weekend when SIL delivered, and she just assumed that the pain was normal. To her credit she BF for 9 months, even in pain.

BFing her second was a breeze for her. No supply issues, and a perfect latch. She BF #2 for 18 months.

She fully believes a big part of her problem with #1 was being uninformed and not asking for help.

@Cchoi4: i'm a little late replying here, but yes, it was so much successful the 2nd time around for me. I only made it 4 months for #1, and it was crushing for me to admit defeat (even though it really shouldn't have been, I was just too hard on myself). This time I set small goals for myself and extended the goal each time I reached it. I reminded myself that #1 was on formula and turned out beautifully and healthy so there was absolutely no pressure. I fed on demand to establish supply instead of forcing #2 to eat on a schedule (I blame babywise for this) and I did not pick up a single parenting book. It worked - I just finished 1 year of successful nursing and its my proudest accomplishment thus far in life! I guess "easier" is not the best word, since I faced a lot of mastitis and blocked pores, plus #2 loved to bite me. But I "rolled with it" better. I think that just comes with experience and letting all the pressure go off of yourself.

@Runsyellowlites-I think I meant easier in that I am much more informed this time around (been attending LLL meetings since DD was 5w old) whereas last time I read the brochure they gave us at the hospital when I delivered and a little bit online but not much else. I am hopeful that because of my previous struggles I will take any struggles this time with a little less panic and will remember that I was able to do it for 14m last time that I can do it this time too.

I struggled greatly with DS and gave up pretty early due to him not gaining adequately but I wasn't nearly as informed as I am this go round so that may have something to do with it.

I don't know about things being "easier" the 2nd time round though... most moms I've talked to have said that each time had it's own struggles and with every child (a few of them have 5+ kids) they wanted to throw in the towel at some point. I know for my DD has definitely had more issues than DS that make bf'ing difficult. Again I'm WAY more informed and have made kellymom.com my bf'ing bible! lol

I'm interested in tips too. I struggled with BF/pumping with my first and had to supplement with formula. I'm hopeful that this time around it will be better/easier.

I only have one and ended up not being able to breastfeed. But ill try again with my second, ive heard a couple positive stories where they could with the second but not the first from family friends. Hopefully ill feel less mommy guilt if it doesn't work again though.

For mommies who have a 2nd baby and struggled with milk supply with the 1st baby, is your experience with your 2nd different? I've read that every baby is different and, therefore, every breastfeeding experience is different. I struggled very much with latching and supply with my 1st. I'm hoping the next baby isn't as difficult to feed.

Did any moms out there have more supply the 2nd time around?
