To ensure that she wasn't staying on the boob for comfort, I started to give her a pacifier when I suspected she was just nursing for comfort, to teach her that the boob is only for food. </p> <p>As far as the percentile... my doctor has always said that as long as your child continues along the same path as they were when they were born, you shouldn't need to worry about giving them more food. If his percentile was consistent, then that's not a cause for concern...my LO has consistently been in 60-70%ile for height and 30-40ish%ile for weight. Be careful because he will love the bottle since it is easier. Their sleep patterns just change. </p> <p>Also, just curious has he always been in that height/weight ratio? Some babies are just tall and lean. I believe you need to do this over a period of feedings though &amp; be sure to use the appropriate scale (one that will show .xxx ounces).</p> <p>As for intake.... It's normal for babies to be at different places on the charts for height &amp; weight and often will switch off each month. I know P has done this where one month she'll jump in height &amp; then the next month jump in weight... and then switch again. As long as he's having good output &amp; his falling into his own consistent growth curve, I wouldn't worry.</p> <p>As for the bottles after a nursing session... Sucking &amp; swallowing is a reflex for babies so if something fills lo mouth they're going to swallow &amp; that will automatically cause another suck resulting in another swallow. It doesn't necessarily mean that he's still hungry. Kellymom has some great tips on bottle feeding the breastfed baby to help not cause issues like overeating &amp; becoming lazy at the breast. Totally worth checking out!</p> <p>Also, baby's sleep patterns change ALOT through infancy &amp; many times its just because &amp; not for any particular reason. Some babies start teething as early as a couple months or it could be a wonder week or a growth spurt or he could just want you more... He can stay on my boob all day. Usually I can tell when he's eating vs when he's comfort nursing. I figured he was eating enough as he has always had a more than appropriate number of wet and dirty diapers. However, at his 2 month appt, the doctor told me that she was concerned that he wasn't eating enough since he is in the 80% for height but only the 25% for weight. She suggested that I offer a bottle after each nursing session to get him to eat more.</p> <p>After doing this for the past week and a half, I've learned a bit more about his eating habits. If I give DS a bottle and don't nurse, he won't take more than 4-5 oz. When I pump, I consistently get 3-5 oz total. Based on this, I would think that I'm producing enough to cover his needs. However, when I give him a bottle after I nurse him, he will regularly take 2-4 oz. Therefore, I'm thinking he's not actually eating but just comfort nursing half the time.</p> <p>The doctor thought this was what was causing the change in his sleeping habits (he was sleeping 5-6 hrs at night and now only 3-4) and why he was wanting to eat every 2 hrs or so during the day. Considering he slept for 6hrs 45 min last night, I'm inclined to believe that he was just hungry, even though he never indicated as such.</p> <p>Has anyone else had this issue and have thoughts on how to get him to nurse better? I was thinking of getting preemie nipples so that he has to work harder to drink his bottle. He does sometime fuss and cry a bit when breastfeeding and I'm thinking it's because he's frustrated that the milk isn't flowing fast enough. Otherwise, I was going to schedule a session with a lactation consultant.</p> <p>I really want to avoid having to BF and then supplement or move to exclusively pumping. Feeding sessions have gotten much longer. </p> <p>I appreciate any other help you have!!! Thanks. </p>
