@winniebee: i wondered this too, as I had a m/c while breastfeeding. I asked my doctor, and she said that plenty of women successfully bf while pregnant, but it's not impossible for it to have something to do with it. I don't know if there's a scientific answer, but it seems to me that there's at least some small correlation (nursing causing uterine contractions).

@MaryM: I don't typically, to my knowledge. I had previously asked whether b/f while pregnant is an issue in her view and she said no, but that it would be exhausting, etc. I don't plan on BF much past a year anyhow, but now am concerned it's causing the m/c in the first place.

Unless you know you normally have low progesterone, it probably isn't a problem. But when pregnant, your progesterone usually rises, and that can cause your milk to dry up.

I'd follow up with a doctor and ask their advice.

I had a chemical pregnancy when DS2 was 9 months and still nursing quite frequently. It looks like I'm having another now - DS2 is almost 1 and nursing 3x a day. Not sure if it's a fluke, or if this is a *thing*.

I was not still nursing when I had my miscarriages but I had just weaned prior to the first and the doctor tested me for elevated prolactin to see if that was causing IF issues. So I think there is something to the idea of hormone levels being off. Obviously lots of people go on to bf while pregnant though.

I would read LLLs Adventures in Tandem Nursing. I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and nursing my 8.5 month old and am hoping to make it to a year. My midwife said it was totally fine to do so. I do have to eat an absurd amount of food though and I will warn you BFing while pregnant hurts a little. Good luck to you!

Thanks guys! I hadn't heard of it much, so your knowledge and opinions are reassuring. I looked a little for more of but didn't find any numbers on the subject. The one thing I saw was that it could also cause you to go into labor earlier in later pregnancy. I did deliver at 36 weeks and my DS was in the NICU. If, and that's a big if, I would be able to breastfeed through pregnancy I might stop before I was too far in just because I wouldn't want to deliver too early! But again, this is all for me to research more and talk to my OB whenever I would get pregnant.

Nursing does cause your uterus to contract. It DOES increase the risk of miscarriage, but only very slightly. This is why our bodies hold off periods for the most part while nursing, until our uterus' get back to normal after birth.

Wow - I've never heard that! I have heard that babies will often ween themselves because the milk is/tastes different during pregnancy but I've never heard that it was a risk to the pregnancy. I would do more research/ask other drs before you decide.

My OB said breastfeeding while pregnant was fine.
I got pregnant shortly after my LO turned 1. I nursed throughout my pregnancy and have a healthy baby boy.
(I dried up, but DD liked to comfort nurse and towards the end I think she got a lot of colostrum).

@Bao: I completely forgot to clarify or ask about what the numbers are on the subject. It was a nurse practitioner that I saw and she wasn't saying not to do it, she just mentioned that it "increases the risk of miscarriage" because of different hormones and what not confusing your body. She did say that she knows women who have done it successfully. I have different friends as well that have done it successfully, but others that were told to stop because of the risk to the unborn baby.

@runsyellowlites: thanks for the info!... I will have to look into it some more. I know a few moms who have nursed through pregnancy as well, so I wasn't sure how legit this news was!

I just wasn't sure if anyone else had heard of this and what not. I wasn't really sure what to do with the info.

Tandem nursing is completely safe so long as you aren't high risk and I know a number of moms that have successfully breastfed through pregnancy.

From my understanding nipple stimulation DOES cause uterine contractions but they aren't efficient enough to cause labor to start. the reason why they generally won't successful induce labor but can help augment a stalled labor.

kellymom & lll have info about breastfeeding during pregnancy. It may be worth reading up on and possibly even taking some literature to your obgyn.

@creativemomma15: I've never heard of this before...I wonder what the statistics really are on it. I would probably continue to breastfeed as long as LO wanted to...but again I guess it would depend on how common a miscarriage was during breastfeeding.

This could go under a few different sections: breastfeeding, miscarriage, and pregnancy/TTC...

I was just at my yearly gyno appointment and asked the Dr about TTC while breastfeeding. She said that if I would get pregnant while breastfeeding it would increase my risk of miscarriage. My son is 10 months old and my DH and I are NTNP but wanting to start to TTC. I would love to breastfeed until 1 year and then I was going to continue to nurse but only like 2x a day. Now, I am not sure how to feel about the increased risk of miscarriage as my DH and I are talking about TTC more seriously.

Would you wean at 1? Wean if/when you got pregnant? Continue breastfeeding?
