@Mrs. Jacks: @Rubies: @Thehistoryofus: @Mrsdaredevil: turns out thehistoryofus and rubies were right, unfortunately. Went to the dr and found out I have thrush. It's just on one side, but he was probably popping off on the other side too because it's uncomfortable for him. Anyway, thrush is indicative of a deeper problem so I have to eliminate all grains, sugars and the like and focus on veggies, proteins and probiotics. We also were prescribed a topical cream. Ugh this is so not fun. Last night Cobi didn't sleep well and I guess this must be why.

@Mrs. Jacks: Oh! And just for you, I did ask my dr about raw milk for babies and she suggested not. She doesn't believe their developing immune systems can handle it. She reccomends waiting until at least 2 years of age :)

@Mrs. Jacks: I'll have to talk to my doctor about it and see if she can explain it to me haha it is all so confusing. There are so many dietary things these days, celiacs, allergies, lactose intolerance, etc etc and it's so much to know and learn!

@Coco Bee: Lactose intolerance is something *different* from milk-protein intolerance. Confusing as hell, isn't it?! It's not the lactose, it's the casein (which is what the pasteurization helps eliminate, ironically. So you are probably giving your babe a *higher* casein load, which can lead to increased intolerance :(

Thanks for indulging me... You're the best... and I totally respect your decision to do raw milk for you (as long as you aren't dealing with MSPI), just so ya know. Hugs and smooches!

@Coco Bee: unfortunately, infants aren't lactose intolerant. They cannot break down the milk protein (casein). So she could still be reacting. But, that does not mean that is the issue with your little one. It sounds like Monday meeting with your pediatrician is a great idea! Good luck and I know we would love to know what it is.

@Mrs. Jacks: Actually one of the things that prompted to start me on raw milk is because there is hardly a chance of a milk intolerance when you drink unpasteurized milk from cows that have received no hormones or antibiotics. Something about the pasteurization process strips the casein (I think that's what it is, I'm fuzzy on the details) from the milk, which in turn is what can cause what is known as lactose intolerance. Anyhow, long story short, most people who have lactose intolerances CAN generally drink raw milk and have no reaction.

But obviously to each their own. I am dead-set and rooted in my opinion/philosophy of raw milk, as I've educated myself on it. Actually, when I was pregnant, my midwife was THRILLED I was on raw milk. I'm pretty sure my doctor would be too - she has similar views as I do. But I will talk to her about it when I go in, just for you :)

Thanks for the support and caring! I appreciate it, even if we don't always agree :) You're a great support in the he;lobee community and I appreciate and respect your feedback.

@Coco Bee: I'm not with you and your little one so I can't have a really informed opinion... but I will say that those were the symptoms that Lala first had with her dairy intolerance. Though I do think other posters are on to something with the thrush idea as well.

I know you'll check it out with your doctor and his doctor before taking next steps and please talk to the pediatrician before you do a raw milk formula. I'm always supportive of people making their own choices for their families, but this is one thing that does make me really nervous. You'll make me feel so much better if LO's doc is in on it! Your little guy is so beautiful and precious, I'd hate for anything bad to happen!

By son seems to nurse best when he is mostly asleep. So, we nurse all night long and hope to get some nursing in during the day.

I have had days like this when he was really little and all I could do is cry. We found he was intolerant of the milk and soy in my diet. He would start out okay but would get worse throughout the day.

@regberadaisy: We've been using nose frida since day one.

Please, please before anyone uses raw milk for an infant, inform yourselves of the risk! There is a very real risk of listeria, e coli or other infections. The highest risk group is infants.

http://www.cdc.gov/Features/RawMilk/
http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/04/is-the-foundation-of-good-health-found-in-a-bottle-of-raw-milk/

Plus doing a homemade milk formula might not make a difference if you are dealing with a milk protein intolerance. I'd try an elimination diet before going to a homemade formula.

I am literally going through the exact same thing right now.
For the past three days, LO keeps getting hysterical every time she nurses and hardly gets anything to eat. She is obviously hungry but she instantly pops off as soon as she latches... she does this on both sides. And my supply has tanked as well! Weird....

The other night it got to the point where I was just bawling because I was fighting with her for over an hour, trying to get her to eat. DH just ended up giving her a bottle which worked. We are taking her to the Ped on Thursday to see what's up.
Good luck. Post an update if it gets better or you find out what's bothering him please!!!!

@Thehistoryofus: well I'll try to get into the dr this week and hopefully rule that out.

@lemondrop: Lol yeah it is haha

@regberadaisy: of course and I totally understand that. Like I said it's my *personal* conviction and in no way would it ever make you or anyone else lesser of a mom for feeding formula! I'm sorry if I came off that way or seemed to have a snooty attitude about it. Obviously I just want to avoid it at all costs. And I know the feeling, this weekend when he would sit and cry at my breast I felt so discouraged, I totally know how easy it would be for me to turn to formula.

@skibobrown: Actually that would totally be ny back up. I book marked a link to a recipe back when I was pregnant just in case. We get raw milk from a farm every week and my mom makes milk kefir which is another ingredient in the formula.

Well pumping is going better today. I made sure to drink 12 glasses of water yesterday, seemed to help since I'm back up to 3-4 oz on each side. Today I'm just bottle feeding him. He'll get the breast at night.

Thanks for all the support. Glad I'm not alone. I'll key you know how it goes.

@regberadaisy: Oh! And yes, I used the nose freida from week 1. :)

My LO has been doing the exact same thing for the past two weeks or so. Never occurred to me congestion might be the reason. I just attributed to her fussiness. She does sound nasaly often, I guess I should give the nose frida a try. She's 6 weeks is that too young to use it?

I really really did not want to supplement with formula either. But I'm just not producing enough for her. When your baby starts crying inconsolably for HOURS. To the point where you rush her to the ER at 4am at 4 days old because you fear it's something else. Then to find out she's just hungry because your body is not giving her enough food. Then formula it is!

@Rubies: both breasts. The formula thing is just a personal conviction of my own, I have yet to find a formula that doesn't contain soy.
Actually, my breasts have been itching to the point of pain lately, and @thehistoryofus: thought thrush too?? But I thought with thrush you see white spots on the baby's mouth?

I am planning to make an appt with our family doctor on monday and see if I can get in this coming week.

@lemondrop: amazingly he seems to eat okay when we're laying down. He still sleeps next to us, so when he wakes I feed him in our bed and all his night feedings were great. So maybe it's just a day thing?

@prettylizy: yeah we use the snotsucker too - but it doesn't seem to be a congestion thing.

I would keep trying to nurse or pump, stay hydrated, eat well and try not to stress! Your body should produce more to keep up with demand.

I'm all for nursing, but lemme tell ya. Formula was my best friend that first month when I wasn't producing enough and I needed to supplement because LO had jaundice. I literally had my baby on my boob 24/7 and it was so exhausting.

It also sounds like it could be a growth spurt. Keep doing what your doing , drink water, eat good, and nurse on demand and in a few days your supply will catch up with the extra demand.

My experience with this same behavior has typically been the reuslt of gas or an overtired/overstimulated baby. My solution has been to change positions -- take my son to our room to lie down and nurse, or walk him around outside for a minute or three as a distraction. On occasion lately he's been fussing and unlatching when he's done nursing, but it's tricky to tell the difference between "I'm done, Mom!" and "OMG where's my milk?!"
