There are really stringent rules for how you pump and store the milk (washing hands before and after, not touching anything, like this keyboard ;) while pumping, etc.) Human Milk for Human Babies (HM4HB) has a facebook page where you can find people in need. A girlfriend of mine found her two donor babies this way.

I have hundreds of oz of milk in the freezer, but am going to hold off on donating until after M is a year old.

I looked up the Mother's Milk Bank of NE and wow, they expect a lot when donating milk!!

If you or anyone in your household is not feeling well, please put an X on those milk containers and separate them from milk you will donate. The milk is fine to feed your own baby, but should not be used to feed the fragile premature babies the milk bank serves.
Before touching your pump or pump parts please wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Actively lather your hands for a full 15 seconds, paying close attention to the area around and under your fingernails. Antimicrobial soap is not necessary. If using bar soap, please use a rack that allows the bar to dry between uses. Dry your hands with a disposable single-use towel. Use the towel to turn off the tap. There is no need to wash your breasts. Rewash your hands if you touch anything other than your pump or your breasts.
Express or pump your milk into a clean container, using clean pump parts. If you are interrupted, cap the milk and put it in the refrigerator. You may go back and finish pumping provided you will finish within 30 minutes of having started.
Please be sure NOT to touch the inside of the caps, bottles or bags or the threadings of any bottles you may be using for storage.
Please do NOT fill the containers past the markings. Milk expands on freezing and too-full bottles and bags will split. If the bags split and leak upon thawing, we cannot use it for pasteurization. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on milk storage container.
Please do not use ordinary zipper bags for milk storage.
Label the milk with: YOUR NAME and DATE of collection. When you are assigned a donor number, please add that to the bags.
Use a new storage container each time you express your milk even if you have one that isn't full. If you need additional milk storage bags, please email or call us and we will be happy to send you some bags.
Place the milk in the rear bottom of your freezer where it is the coldest. Please freeze the milk immediately after expressing it.

@Arden: Oooo that's a fantastic idea! @winniebee - I like the idea of putting it out there on the web for another Mom who may need it.

Yeah, you'll be unlikely to be able to donate to a bank with excess milk. Also, you have to pay to be screened before they even consider you, which I find irritating. I've donated milk through local milk shares, which is likely to be an easier option. I just called my local birthing center and asked if they knew anyone who needed it, but there are also websites for people requesting milk.

I would suggest private donation - as in, find someone on the internet that really needs it and doesn't care about every little thing you ate, and give it to them. There are websites for that, I just don't remember any...

My friend is doing this and they have very specific rules, like you can't have had coffee two hours prior to pumping, etc. You also have to get something signed from your doctor and your baby's doctor. And you have to have a certain number of ounces to donate it, since it costs them a lot of money to test and pasteurize it or whatever, but it sounds like you have plenty!

I would also get in touch with LLL or a LC in your area. They may know. There are also people that may be willing to accept the donated milk not through a bank.

I really wanted to donate but my milk was ineligible because I took herbal supplements like fenugreek and blessed thistle.

Here is the organization I wanted to donate to:

Human Milk Bank Association of North America
https://www.hmbana.org/

Good luck!

Has anyone donated breastmilk to a milk bank? If so, can you share your experience and/or give me tips? I'm looking into it because my son has MSPI and I have probably 600 ounces of frozen milk that has soy and traces of dairy and I don't want it to go to waste.

Thanks!
