@LBee: Thank you, will do! I also walled T.H.O.U. last night because I remembered she went through the same thing.

My 26-month-old son is also in the mold of your daughter, I thought one mini dictator here was enough! Maybe your girl will be a super powerful rich boss lady who is extremely precise :)

@LCTBQE: Hey lady. Wall @jape14, she has lots of bottle strike tips.

And my daughter was a complete diva (as I mentioned in my post) - I'd love to say that the behavior hasn't continued as she's aged, but :meh: . We joke that she will rule the world one day with her attitude.

@catgirl: @mrswin: @agold: @MrsSRS: @Littlebit7: @peaches1038: @Jess1483: @LBee: @sckim: @MamaBear87:

thanks for the responses, everyone--sorry for the late reply, my in-laws were visiting and then I was trouble-shooting all weekend. I'm sure that I do have high lipase, but the bigger problem is it's also definitely, definitely a bottle strike :bummed: on Friday I was out of the house 3pm-10pm. I left freshly pumped/scalded milk and my husband and MIL could *not* get her to take the bottle and tried very hard--she didn't eat for 8 hours. Then over the weekend I tried several times to give her freshly-pumped bottles (like minutes before pumped) and she wasn't having it. This morning I got her to take 3oz (with extraordinary effort) from a new Comotomo, in the bathroom, faucet on, lights off, facing out, with piping hot fresh milk and a warmed up nipple. How diva is that?? I'm going to just keep at it and keep at it, but any bottle strike tips are VERY welcome. I'm going to def be conscious of the lipase issue going forward, too. Bleh.

@Jess1483: thanks for all the specifics about donating, and yes that sounds like it was a complete PITA to figure out. I think like you mine only lasts a few hours. sheesh :meh:

@mrswin: @Littlebit7: poor babies drinking vomity/metallic-y milk (I can't believe they'll drink vomit lipase milks!) mine has that taste/smell that foods take on if they've been in a filthy freezer for a million years, x1000--except our freezer is clean and it takes on that taste after a few hours. I think I'm going to have to trouble shoot some more to see what she'll tolerate and if I need to mix the frozen stuff with fresh/scalded, if the vanilla trick works, etc, which I'll only be able to do after I resolve this damn bottle strike.

@agold: thanks for the support  there's always something, right? at least she sleeps!

@catgirl: OMG, that sounds not ideal... I am pretty determined to work through this freaking bottle issue though, I will literally have to quit my job which is half of our HHI if she won't eat. I work 2 hours away on public transit with no feasible driving route from our house, it's not like I can pop over on my lunch break to nurse. when you had appointments and such, were you just like, "sorry caregiver, it's going to be rough"??

@peaches1038: uh yes, it's stressful :) did you ever deal with a bottle strike specifically, or was it just related to your lipase issue? if so what did you guys do?

@LCTBQE: I had high lipase with my DD but it presented as more of a metalic taste/smell that for some reason was only obvious to my DH!
My milk seemed to be ok in the fridge for up to 24 hours or so. So Monday’s milk would be used for Tuesday’s bottles and so on through the week. On Friday we would scald and freeze the milk.
As for all the milk we had already in the freezer stash when we discovered this we were able to use it by mixing 1/4 frozen with 3/4 fresh. It was a huge PITA and we didn’t discover the issue until I went back to work at 5 months but once we got it figured out it was ok.

I have high lipase with both kids. Mine didn't taste like soap however. Mine smelled like vomit. It was in no way pleasant. However, both of my kids take the bottles. Fresh or frozen, doesn't really matter. I tried scalding for about a day and there was no way i was going to be able to keep up with that.

I also had high lipase and ended up donating my stash. I was lucky that I always produced enough to give the next day, so I just stopped freezing it and always gave fresh. My milk lasted about 36 hours before the taste changed

ETA I work full time too so I know how stressful this all is when your baby won’t take a bottle!

I had high lipase with both kids (though I never even had #2 try anything but fresh or treated). It does sound like this is lipase rather than bottle rejection since she'll take fresh pumped. Mine "lasted" 5 hours before it went bad, so I generally pumped and then immediately scalded for storage.

That said, I had over 1000 ounces frozen (I'm a high producer) before I figured it out. I asked them about donating and they said absolutely, for a couple reasons. 1) So many babies using donor milk are being fed by feeding tube, so the taste doesn't matter and 2) it's all mixed up with other peoples' milk, so the taste is diluted.

I went through a billion trials with my son before figuring this out. Feel free to PM for advice or commiseration.

@LCTBQE: we never got her to take bottles after she refused them at 5 months, and we tried all sorts of things. It was technically okay because I SAH but it sucked. When she was eleven months she would occasionally take breast milk from a sippy cup.

@MamaBear87: @catgirl: yeah, you're probably right that I could have had it the first time and my son didn't mind. I recalled after writing this that I never thought the thawed frozen stuff smelled that great with him either, but I never looked into it because I knew I'd frozen it properly and he drank it fine. Thanks for the tip on the vanilla, I have some and will try. @catgirl how did you guys ultimately work around the bottle rejection?

@LBee: haha, I had a serious mental block on this and was never going to get there with your advice to try freshly pumped when she's being fussy about bottles, which like your daughter is also afternoon/evening. I have some trouble shooting ahead but this is encouraging. And I'll def donate it if the vanilla doesn't work on the already-frozen.

The only real way to know is to try giving her freshly expressed at a time she usually rejects. FWIW, I have high lipase (at least I think - it smells soapy) and my kids don't seem to care. I've also donated TONS of milk (like over 3,000 ounces) and all the kids I've donated to haven't cared either.

Also, my daughter was a lot more weird about bottles in the afternoon. Required certain temp, fed a certain way, etc etc. I think she was less hungry so felt that she could be demanding. It was in keeping with her dictator personality so we rolled with it.

@LCTBQE: no formula. I scald all my milk that I pump. I'm away from my kid about 11 hours on the days I work so I scald my milk in my office. I have a high speed munchkin bottle warmer and use a stainless steel bottle to scald. I was really discouraged at fifrst since I already hate pumping with a passion and this was just an additional task, but its pretty easy now.

@sckim: Ugh, bummer. So what did you end up doing for bottles? Formula, or did you scald? I'm going back in my head thinking about why she used to take bottles for the first month when my husband and I were doing night shifts, and realized ALL of those bottles were freshly pumped and used within 4 hours.

I was worried about high lipase when my DD started refusing bottles. We tested it by trying to give her milk that I literally just finished pumping, like I pumped into the bottle, detached from pump, put on nipple, and handed to DH - she still rejected it.

Since your DD does take a bottle of pretty fresh milk I would assume high lipase over bottle rejection. I think it is possible to have it with one LO and not the other. It's also possible to have it with both but only one LO cares.

I had high lipase with my first. I stay at home so I never tested how long it took to turn but my daughter wouldn't take any of my small frozen stash. I could pump fresh and leave it for a that night sitter but would have had to scald to freeze it.
You can try alcohol free vanilla extract to try and disguise the taste and see if your daughter will take it. I've also heard some kids are less picky and will drink even the frozen stuff so you could have had it with your first as well

i thought my first baby was rejecting bottles until i tasted my "fresh" milk. i read about high lipase affecting your frozen supply, but i didnt realize until way later that my fresh milk was also terrible. I did a taste test, and realized my pumped milk started tasting weird in the fridge after 7ish hours. This was true for both my babies

Can anyone who's been there talk me through this?

I think I figured out why my mostly EBF 12-week-old daughter has been really fussy and reluctant to take bottles--finally did a taste/smell test, which made me feel like a cannibal btw, and while I thought they both smelled gross, the frozen/thawed milk had a nasty, plastic-y/soapy aftertaste and the freshly-pumped didn't. When I've been away for appointments baby girl will take the first bottle I leave with the sitter (always the fresh one) and then reject the later bottles, usually from the fridge that were pumped in the past day or two. I'm trying to determine whether it's really high lipase that's the problem or if she just is developing a bottle rejection issue (which would be a serious problem because she's starting daycare right after the holidays).

So, does it sound most likely that my huge frozen stash is all tainted with high lipase and I have to scald immediately and start over? I read that you can still donate high lipase frozen, but is that gross and rude, or actually helpful? Also wondering if high lipase is consistent with the mother through multiple babies, or if it's possible to have it with one baby and not with another--my son, who's now 2, never had a problem at all with the next-day stuff or the frozen, he was a total milk monster. New baby is a terrific nurser and gaining very well, but is rejecting this milk.
