Oh my! I've heard of this happening, but I still can't imagine how scary it is to witness!

Well, I would have needed an additional ambulance for myself in that situation. I'm glad to hear your child is ok.

Thanks for the sweet words. It was very scary - I think it's strange that it happened so soon - he couldn't have been holding his breath for much more than 30 seconds. His 2 year check-up is coming up soon - so I'm eager to get his iron levels checked.

my guy does this too and my sister (a nurse) says there is really nothing to do about it except the other suggestions of blowing in the face, splashing cold water or maybe a little pinch to "snap them out of it". It really freaks the nanny out.
@Mrs. Jacks: I didn't realize there was a correlation with low iron. J is always on the borderline of anemia, but this makes a lot of sense to know that this and low iron go together.

Wow, I'm glad he's okay! My 4-year-old tumbled down the long side of our stairs slamming his head on the hardwood floor really hard so I know how you feel! Thankfully, no concussion but that was the ER doc's real concern. He ended up having the worst black eye from the trauma to that side of his face. It looked like someone literally punched his eye socket. Sounds like you have some good support here about holding his breath. Hope it's something he can outgrow.

That is so scary! DD's never gotten to the point of passing out from that hold-your-breath cry, but I have to blow in her face a lot to get her to cry. It makes me so sad for her! :'(

I've also had to blow in my daughter's face to get her to breathe (most recently at her 1 year old shots.) The nurse was like "okay blow in her face or she's going to pass out.)

@Mrs. Jacks: That's good to know! I'll talk to H's doctor at his next appointment.

My DS does this. If you blow hard into his face, though, it usually startles him into taking a breath, and then he cries normally. He's only gotten to the passing out point once because we're usually able to stop him before that.

I see it all the time. Make sure to get an iron level checked as most of these kids are anemic.

Saturday night my 2 year old fell/jumped off our bed. I ran over and picked him up right away and he was doing that silent cry/breath holding thing – but then finally let some noise out but his head went back and he went silent – so I was worried that he had some sort of back/neck injury so I laid him down on our bed…and then his eyes rolled into the back of his head and he went unconscious for probably not even 5 seconds. He came to, and started crying but calmed down fairly quickly – he was able to move around and was acting fairly normal. I, of course, was not ok (I can’t get the image of him going unconscious out of my mind) so we went to the ER.

The doctor was worried about a head injury (as were we) but after looking him over and hearing our story – he thought that him passing out/going unconscious was probably not due to a head trauma – but more with holding his breath right after the injury – and sent us home to watch for any signs of head trauma. Which we haven’t seen anything and he is 100% himself.

I’ve heard of other kids doing this breath withholding when they get injured/upset and passing out but my son has never done this. That had to be the single most frightening moment of my life. Do any of your children do this?
