We skipped a bumper altogether. One time DS got his foot in between the slats and cried because it woke him up. That was the only time we ever had an issue and he's been in his crib since 3 months of age and is 15 months old now. For a while I thought a bumper would help keep his paci in the crib, but now he just throws it out himself when he wants to get out, so regardless we'd have to go back in to fetch it.

@LivsMama: Yes I also wish it was one piece! it would be soooo much easier.
@lemondrop: Thanks for the photo. I ended up only using one of the two pieces. I just wasnt happy with the overlaps and since she usually gets her hands stuff on only one side of the crib, I used the long piece for the the back of the crib, and sides and part of the front. So the other part of the front has no bumper at all and I can see her clearly. We usually put her to sleep on her belly and she kinda"crawls" forward gradually so I really wanted to be able to see her. This way I know she gets fresh air in there.

We have used the breathable bumpers from about 4 weeks, when he started sleeping in his crib at night.

Installation was not. fun. Once I got it in after watching the video like 40 times, I like it. It overlaps at two crib bars, probably about 5 inches at each end if you look at the bottom corners of the photo.

Here is a photo of it:

we have the breathable one, and it should overlap like that. It is still more breathable than a standard bumper. It took me for frickin ever to figure out how to put it on lol. I dont know why they dont make it one piece and line more of it with velcro.

@alison206: Not a stupid question. They keep changing it. Now they are recommending that it doesnt ever get used.. Liv is a year old and I still wouldnt use one. but thats just paranoid me whose kid sleeps with an Angelcare lol.

I just set up our crib and put in the bumpers. On the 2nd night DH found LO with her face smushed into the bumper. She's only 6 weeks and not rolling over so I didn't think it'd be a problem but I think she scoots over when kicking her legs. I guess we'll be getting some breathable ones now!

@alison206: Are you talking about a regular bumper? Some people put it in right away. I just didnt want to use that sort of bumper due to the recommendations that it was safer to use a breathable bumper or no bumper at all

Stupid question: when can the bumper that goes with the set be in the crib?

Yeah here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q_eOEYXrLM

@Mrs. Bee: Sure I'd love to see a picture. But even with the gap i'll have plenty of bumper left over so it overlaps a lot. I guess i just thought it was breathable as one layer rather than doubled over

@Mrsbells: i can take a picture of ours tomorrow so you can see how we installed it. i think we have two little gaps, but that's better than overlap?

@mrs. wagon: According to the video on their website, there shouldnt be any gaps in the bumper so you get 4 layers at the joints..

Hmm... tough to picture how it can be 4 layers... basically ours is two pieces: one long to cover the back and sides of the crib, and one short to cover the front side of the crib. There are two layers just where it velcros to itself on the sides and on either side of the front of the crib. Never 4 layers.

Do you use a breathable bumper? We bought one from target and the installation is really annoying me. Firstly I didnt realize it was gonna be in 2 pieces, so no matter how I install it the "breathable" fabric overlaps. At some points its like 4 layers of fabric, so it cant be breathable all around then? I watched the installation video and I'm doing it exactly as the described. If you use a breathable bumper does yours overlap a lot
