@Greentea: that was my first thought! But they claimed its just as firm as a conventional mattress. Curious if that's true...

This doesn't seem safe to me. Baby needs a firm surface.

I have seen that and it's interesting but really not something I'm that interested in. As far as I know, the much bigger risk of suffocation is on items in the crib- blankets, stuffed animals, and the like. I never heard that a regular firm crib mattress poses a risk- aside from contributing to a flat spot since babies spend so much time laying on their backs.

Off the top of my head, I sort of wonder if this might create issues because babies wouldn't learn to turn their head to breath at night. If they were always able to sleep face down, would it be dangerous when they slept anywhere else?

I don't know. Admittedly SIDS was not super high on the list of things I worried about. I followed guidelines about having her sleep flat on a firm surface from day 1, we room shared for 6 mo, she used a paci to sleep, and she didn't get a stuffed animal in her crib until past 1. But I probably wouldn't spend $400 on a mattress because I don't feel like the risk of her sleeping face down on her current mattress and suffocating herself is very high.

Just saw this on Facebook today:
http://www.securebeginnings.com/#!shop-heaven-sent-breathable/c1972

It's a crib mattress with a breathable material suspended over a wooden frame.
Would you try it?
It comes with a pretty hefty price tag - $400+ but I'm intrigued.

"s is specifically designed to be the safest crib mattress available on the market today for your baby. It replaces foam and cotton filled mattresses with a comfortable breathable fabric surface suspended over a wood frame with openings on the sides allowing constant air circulation for your baby. "
