I had a breech baby (she ended up transverse), and I did everything except an ECV (didn't feel comfortable doing it). Headstands in the pool, chiropractor, moxibustion, acupuncture, etc. She never fully turned, and we had a scheduled C-section at 39 weeks 5 days. It was great and was very low-stress and a very easy recovery! Don't worry, it will be fine.

My baby was breech from about 28 weeks onward. My OB didn't want to do ECV because I'm a first time mom and quite small. We scheduled a c section quite early for 38 weeks. Everyone asked why we weren't doing an ECV, but I'm glad we didn't. Turns out the cord was wrapped around her head twice! We would have had an emergency c section If we'd attempted...

What is ECV?

Also at 24 weeks that is more than enough time to turn lady!

IF you're really against c-section, I suggest researching hospitals in your area to see if any will deliver breech babies. The hospital I delivered at was in partnership with my midwife's practice because they were naturally minded and the only hospital in our area (it was even out of our state!) that would deliver breech. My friend delivered her breech baby there :)

i'm in almost the exact same boat... almost 33 weeks along and our baby is in the frank breech position. i have a post queued up about all the holistic things you can do to encourage the baby to flip on it's own, but in the meantime it's so frustrating! we've been preparing for an unmedicated natural birth so a c-section would be quite the bummer. but there's still hope!

@photojane: He was 6 lbs 1 oz and 18 inches so he was a good size for being 4 weeks early! We had a great experience with our hospital and NICU too. We were very thankful considering the circumstances! I am glad you have Drs and a hospital you can trust!

@photojane: It's hard to say! I aske my OB that exact same question and he said my early labor could have something to do with the fact that he was breech. or not. He said he didn't think so though. Don't worry! You still have plenty of time for your LO to turn!!

On the plus side, her daughter had good head control really early on from all that time in the womb she spent head-up ;)

There's still definitely time for lo to turn! My MW told me she's seen lots of babies turn as late as DURING labor! Also, waiting until baby signals your body its ready allows baby to get all those good labor hormones which studies are starting to show baby benefits greatly from!

There's also the option of finding a provider trained in breech birth! If they have experience in delivering this variation then its usually the safer option still posing less risks than a cesarean.

If you do need a cesarean waiting as long as possible is definitely best for baby since there's still lots of brain growth & development in the last few weeks & baby is normally going to do it most uninhibited growth in utero since learning to eat, cry, etc aren't a factor like once they're born.

Really hope she turns or that you can find a breech competent provider! (It's never too late to change providers)

My LO wasn't breech, but I did have an emergency c-section (due to fetal distress), and I had a good experience. I would wait as long as possible, *just in case* your LO still flips, but don't be too scared of an unscheduled c-section. If you go into labour before your c-section date it won't be a big traumatizing thing, they will just fit you in for a section ASAP.

My LO was frank breech and didn't flip at all from 30 weeks onwards. I tried different exercises from spinningbabies and moxibustion sticks for about 10 seconds. Haha. ECV wasn't an option because my amniotic fluid was slightly low. I was also carrying really compact, but I don't know if that makes a difference.

We scheduled a c-section for 39 weeks even though I was given the option to try for a natural delivery. I didn't want to take the risk of having an emergency c-section.

Overall, the surgery went really smoothly with no major complications. My LO needed forceps to come out and he had minor respiratory distress at first but the respiratory therapist cleared him almost immediately. He had froggy legs too but they normalized pretty quickly. There was no concern regarding hip dysplasia.

@Ash: Unfortunately, I don't think we can afford to go see a chiropractor now. I'm just being very forceful about her flipping - she's in trouble if she doesn't!! :)

@travelgirl1: Thank you SO much for your positive story! You don't know how comforting it is to hear that!

@bree72: My nephew was born vaginally at almost 42 weeks, and had really awful reflux for a long time, so definitely don't blame yourself! I don't believe you had anything to do with that! I actually just got back from my babymoon where I floated around in the pool -- it felt wonderful, but obviously she didn't care that much either! Ha.

@NerdBee: I have the some problem - I have a short torso, and I can't imagine that she'll have the room to flip over at this point. I can feel pretty much every single movement she makes now... it's getting tight!

@Mrsbells: I'm actually almost 33 weeks. The doctor said that after 28 weeks, the chances of her flipping on her own are slim, and now that I'm over a month past that point she's not optimistic. I refuse to lose hope though!

@banana: Did your early labor have anything to do with him being breech or was it just a coincidence? From what I've read, it seems like breech mamas go into labor earlier!

@creativemomma15: I'm so glad he's doing well now! I'm terrified of an emergency c-section, but love and trust my OB's and hospital. The NICU is awesome. How much did your son weigh at birth?

My son wasn't breech and then flipped into breech position at 36 weeks and then my water broke. We found out when my water broke that he was breech, confirmed with an ultrasound and ended up needing an emergency c-section because I had progressed the whole way to 10 cm dilated while I was still in triage. They rushed me into an OR and got him out fast! He ended up in the NICU for 1 week because of some complications with him being preterm. Since he never got that big push out to help him clear his lungs he was working too hard to breath and needed support. When he was born he had a red ring mark around his butt from being in the birth canal and was a little black and blue but he is fine and thriving now. My recovery went really well too which I was very thankful for. I think a lot of it had to do with me trying to get up and walking back and forth to the NICU.

Good luck with your LO and hopefully she will still turn! I hope you don't need a C-section!

@photojane: I know what you mean. As momma's, we're going to worry about everything. I worried about hip dysplasia too and I felt so bad about his froggy legs. I felt that it was my fault because I'm petite and have a small torso so he probably didn't have enough room to turn in there. The couple of weeks that it took for his legs to straighten out seemed like forever! But everything worked out fine for us and I'm sure it will for you too. *hugs!*

So sorry about your news. My 8 month old flipped to breech around 34 weeks and we ended up with a c-section at 39 weeks. I tried acupuncture and floating in the pool, but he was just comfortable where he was. I also tried some of the positions from the spinningbabies website. I was really upset (and still kind of am) that we had to have a scheduled c-section, but he was footling breech, so it had to be done.

I would say, though, that I wished I had pushed to try and let him go the full 40 weeks, and given him that extra time to see if he would have flipped. I just felt so much pressure from the doctor to just go ahead and schedule it, and I was so upset about it all, I didn't fight for what I really wanted. He had some digestion issues for a while (and is still battling reflux) and I sometimes think if I had let him cook a little longer, he might not have had such a time.

@photojane: Ariela was breech and didn't turn so we scheduled a c-section for 40 weeks. She came out perfect, the operation was fab and they put her on my chest to do skin to skin while they finished up. She reached out her little hand and explored my face andy heart melted, surgery didn't affect our bond at all. She slept in my arms on hospital so I could get to her quickly without having to get out of bed and apart from some pain for the first week, my recovery has been great! 6 weeks on I feel quite lucky I escaped labour. Don't worry, most sections aren't as bad as people fear.

The girl that does my hair just had a section because her baby was breech. Her water broke the day before she was scheduled to go in. It isn't considered an emergency, it's considered an unscheduled scheduled c section. Same goes for if you start having contractions prior to the scheduled date.

@photojane: this actually happened to someone during my induction. I had to get my epidural earlier than planned because a scheduled c-section went into labor spontaneously. The anesthesiologist didn't act like it was and "emergency" and actually said they weren't in a hurry for the other woman, she just didn't want me to get stuck wanting the epi and not be able to get it because she was in surgery.

My DS was frank breech and I had to deliver by c-section at 37 weeks because I had an incompetent cervix and my OB didn't want me to go into labour with the cervical stitch in since my cervix would tear.

LO was born at 6lbs 4oz with APGAR scores of 9. The only thing was that because he had been in the frank breech position for so long that he came our with froggy legs that wouldn't straighten. We were told that this was normal for frank breech babies and that his legs would relax and straighten out in time. They did straighten out after a couple of weeks but I remember being really worried about his legs. It was impossible to put pants on him! He also needed to get an ultrasound at about a month to check for hip dysplasia which is also routine .

So don't worry! I've heard that alot of babes turn late and even if your LO doesn't turn, everything will be fine. Good luck!

@purrpletulips: I'm just super nervous about needing an emergency c-section! What if my water breaks before my scheduled c-section? My biggest fear. EEK!

@Ash: That's the website the midwife gave me! There's only one thing on the website I feel comfortable doing - you basically hang off the couch on your knees. It is super awkward!

I have a friend whose baby was breech but flipped last minute. :) She talked about this website.

There is still time for her to turn. DS was breech at our 22w ultrasound so I started talking with my OB about possibility of c-section and timing and he wouldn't consider scheduling it, if needed, until at least 39 weeks because there wasn't a medical reason for it. Talk with your OB at the January appointment because they'll know best what they recommend.
