If it were me I would opt for the c section most likely but I fully support all options for others and I know many do deliver breech babies vaginally with no issue.

So my baby was breech from weeks 32 to 34 and then she flipped on her own. I did lots of hands and knees, lying on my left side and all kinds of stuff I read on Spinning Babies. It worked.

At the time, I figured if she hadn't flipped I would go for an ECV. But now that I've had a csection, I would just schedule a section. It was way easy.

@night cheese: Just wanted to tell you I'm at 35 w 4 days and was able to confirm today my breech baby has flipped sometime in the past two weeks :) I'm so happy! I hope you get the same news soon! Hopefully she stays heads down, too.

Of course, it could be coincidental, but I'm thinking she flipped after acupuncture. I also went to the chiropractor, but I think she had flipped before then. My thoughts were, these couldn't hurt and they might help. The only drawback is the expense, but it was worth it to me to try to avoid a c section and I used my FSA account...

My experience is a tad different, since I had twins. Baby B was always breech and never turned. Obviously there was less room in my belly for him to turn. :silly: So even though Baby A was head down, we opted for a c section since Baby B was flipped. My c section was easy peasy and I had a super simple recovery as well!

My daughter was head down and flipped herself at 38 weeks. We found out at our appointment at 38.5 weeks. Our OB didn't recommend ECV so late in the game and recommended a scheduled c-section. For me, I was comfortable with our OB and trusted his advice. He also gave us the option to talk to another OB in his practice for a second opinion. To me, that second opinion cemented that we were making a good decision. You could ask your OB if there's someone else you can talk to. Our c-section was a really positive experience and I wouldn't do it differently.

@night cheese: I found out DS was breech at 36 weeks 4 days and they offered an ECV at 37 weeks. We tried it but after a half hour or more of pushing they could not get him to budge. I know he had been breech the whole time because his position felt the same as it had for weeks. In retrospect I wish we hadn't tried, It is a little uncomfortable (not physically but the thought) to have them pushing and not knowing exactly what they are pushing.

I also tried every pose on spinning babies, acupuncture, moxa sticks, etc and he refused to turn. I had a scheduled c section at 39 weeks 1 day and the OB said when they pulled him out that he was really wedged in there.

As for the c section, I had a great experience. It wasn't the birth I had dreamed of but I'm glad I accepted it a couple of days before delivery and stopped obsessing over getting him to turn, I was able to enjoy the last couple days of pregnancy and get excited to meet my son!!

@night cheese: I'm also very skeptical about moxa but I would try a chiro. I've seen some pretty good evidence that it might actually work. I just read a study that gave it a 69% success rate, I think?

@night cheese: even my uber-crunchy midwife was pretty skeptical about acupuncture and moxibution to turn babies, her theory was that those babies who turned with the treatment probably would've turned anyways.

Another question for you OP, do you ever feel your LO try to flip round? My LO was often closer to transverse than breech which is possibly why my ECV was successful.

@shortcake: this was very much how I viewed it, I felt like I had nothing to lose by giving it a shot.

My daughter was breech my whole third trimester and I did an ECV at 38 weeks. It has a 50% success rate so why not try? It did not hurt in the slightest. I tried to keep really relaxed the whole time and just did some deep breathing and it was not even uncomfortable. I would absolutely do it again to avoid surgery. I guess it depends on your baby's position but don't let the fear of the procedure scare into opting for surgery. It is done under ultrasound guidance so there is very little risk. If anything goes wrong it is just a matter of monitoring. or at worst, a section a week earlier.

Unfortunately it didn't work for us, my LO had her hands tangled in the cord, but I am so glad I tried and would absolutely try again. Especially now because I am pregnant again and VBAC's or repeat c-sections carry additional risk.

The way my OB framed the decision was why not try and I totally agree.

@night cheese: My LO was frank breech as well from 28 weeks onwards. He wasn't budging. An ECV wasn't advised as my amniotic fluid was slightly low and the success rate was low. I had a scheduled c-section and I have absolutely no regrets!

I'm surprised that you are more skeptical of chiro, acupuncture and moxibustion as they are far less invasive than an ECV. I admit that i didn't try any of those options (although they were all recommended to me!)...well, I tried moxibustion for 10 seconds and my feet couldn't handle the heat. Plus, it was winter and we had to do it inside and it made the house smell like it was burning down. :silly:

Thanks for the insight and stories. The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking we'll skip the ECV. I'm still holding on to a teeny shred of hope that it'll turn on its own, but who knows?

I'm VERY skeptical about chiropractic, acupuncture, moxibustion, etc. so I'm not interested in pursuing that.

I planned on doing and ECV but my water broke at 38 weeks. Which was the day before it was scheduled. I had spent the previous two weeks doing things from the spinning babies website as well as at a chiropractor that specialized in Webster. Also at the accupuncturist. Obviously those things didn't help me but I am still glad I tried. I was "planning" on a med free Bradley birth at a birth center w/ midwives so a csection through me for a loop. I did not want it to be scheduled and was hoping to convince my drs to let me go into labor first. This probably would have been a fight. So I'm thankful that my water broke as I took it as a sign he was ready to be born. Nothing against those who schedule - but it was really helpful for me to come to terms with everything that was happening.

I had an ECV and it was totally not that big if a deal so I would definitely try that first. It's uncomfortable but not very painful. My belly felt bruised for a few days after(no visible bruising). Alas the version did not work for us. I also did everything on spinning babies.com including acupuncture and chiropractic but LO would not budge. After my c-section the OB said he could not see any reason for LO being breech. No short cord or funny shaped uterus or anything.

I chose not to do the ECV because I felt that my OB wasn't super comfortable doing it and said that only one OB in his office successfully turned a baby a couple of times in the two years she was there. And the chances the baby would turn would be less than 45% for me. I waited and he didn't turn so I did go in for a c-section, but it wasn't all that bad. I was a little sad I wasn't able to have a vaginal birth. And I think he was in that position for so long b/c his legs came out really awkwardly positioned. I think swaddling helped his legs get back to normal. I thought maybe I would with my second but opted for another c-section. Five years and two boys later, I haven't regretted my decision, especially hearing about all the stories about going through labor only to have a section. Have you looked into acupuncture? I've heard a lot of success stories with that. Good luck with whatever you decide!

My advice is to speak at length with your OB and ask for information to read. My OB pointed me to a few websites so I could watch a version being done.

In the end, we elected not to have one and my OB said she didn't really recommend one, but she had to present it as an option.

Sadie was breech at 35, 36, and 37 weeks. She had turned all on her own by my 38 week appointment. Doctor said it happens ALL the time. It's still early so I wouldn't worry just yet! :)

I had a failed ecv and then a c-section as a first time mom. It was unpleasant but it only lasted like literally 45 seconds, so it was no big deal in the grand scheme of things. I did want to give it my best shot to flip the baby if possible so I don't regret it even though it was unsuccesssful.

I know you didn't ask this, but have you tried going to a chiropractor trained in the Webster technique? My chiros have used it successfully to turn breech babes. Just another non surgical option!
