@ALV91711: I thought about this because I think it’s such a fun idea but it would only end up being about 8 recipes or so since a couple of the attendees are teenagers (who I assume don’t cook). I’m not sure if that’s enough for a recipe book?

I like the bottle of wine idea. What about everybody bring their favourite recipe and make them a little cookbook?

@psw27: @Sams Mom: Thanks! I think I am going to guide people to a bottle of wine or favorite cookbook but turns out that they do have a honeyfund. They don't have specific things listed, like an excursion, just a general pot of money. I'll probably include the link to that and then ask people to bring a bottle of wine or favorite cookbook too.

My sister and her husband just had a honeyfund.com registry since it was marriage #2 for both. You could donate money in general or "buy a round of drinks" or an excursion or... I forgot what else. But they got about half their trip paid for, which was nice since they weren't going to have one at all. 🤷🏼‍♀️

As to the shower, optional games with goodie bag prizes is fun.

I agree that she either needs a small registry or you should establish a theme - everyone bring your favorite bottle of wine or cookbook - bring a kitchen item you can't live without, etc.

@Lahela017: @graceandjoy: @nwm: Thanks, these are all really good suggestions. I'll definitely check with the bride. I am going to try to steer her towards making a small registry...especially these days it's so easy to create a registry that's more than just cookware and bath towels.

I didn't have a registry and the hosts for my bridal shower (admittedly, first) were really insistent that there still be gifts so everyone had to just guess at gifts. I got really great stuff, but I love the idea of picking a theme--like the way you would ask for books for a baby shower--that matches with the bride's interests and might help people simplify gifts a bit. Love the ideas listed above, or if they are planning to do a honeymoon you could ask people to bring travel essentials for the trip (fancy travel toiletries, packable bags, whatever). I would definitely agree to double check with the bride about what she wants on that score.

Re: gifts, I guess I'd understand no gifts if I know this is a 2nd marriage/combining existing households. If she 100% does not even want to put together a small registry, I think it's ok to say no gifts necessary on the invite?

I'm THAT person who always still feel a need to gift, but anytime I see no gifts I usually just e-mail an Amazon giftcard!

If they don't have a registry, I wouldn't give other guests suggestions on gifts. I'd double check with the bride to see if she is sure she doesn't want to do a small registry though. It seems weird to have a shower without a registry. People are still going to bring gifts.... You could always do a theme and then people could gift off of that, such as bring your favorite cook book as a gift or something like that. Typically registries I've seen for second weddings are small and different items like board games, camping gear, gardening tools, etc. Any of those could work as a gift theme for the shower. I'd chat with the bride about it. Maybe she's expecting no gifts? In that case, I think it's fine to tell guests that, and if anyone does bring a gift, just don't open it at the shower.

@cake2017: Oh good call on the food. I forgot about a dessert, haha. I emailed my friend's mother and sister today and I might see if they can bring additional food. Wraps are a good idea.

@Lahela017: @graceandjoy: Thanks, I'll add an activity or two. Love the apron idea! They actually really love to cook together and have gone to a number of cooking classes so maybe I can get his and hers aprons.

Any suggestions on how to handle gifts without a registry?

Low key activity is good too. I just threw my sister's shower and it was kitchen/cooking themed, and one of two activity was just signing/decorating an apron and guests had a lot of fun. I wouldn't recommend our other activity (writing down advice aka recipe for love) since this is their 2nd marriage.

I would still do one or two low key games, to help break the ice and fill some time, but you don't have to. I always like when they have paper games like word searches or something like that on the table. Then I have something to do until other people I know arrive.

Not parenting or kid related, but I need help and you guys always have great suggestions! I'm hosting a small bridal brunch for my BFF at my house. It's the second marriage for both her and her fiance so the wedding is pretty small and obviously the shower will be smaller. Probably around 10 people, just the women in her and her fiance's immediate family and me.

For the menu I am doing a small mimosa bar, quiche, side salad, fruit. I'll keep the decor simple and just put fresh flowers around my house. Should we do any games? Have favors? To me that seems like things for a bigger shower, but maybe we need some kind of "activity." Also, they are not registering anywhere because they are combining households and really don't need anything. I am not sure what to suggest for gifts, if anything at all?

This is the first bridal event that I have been to for a second marriage and the smallest one that I have helped host, so I am not sure what's appropriate. Any advice would be appreciated!
