@littlejoy. It is indeed miserable. You should have him follow up with an ortho doc. I've seen ER docs all too frequently say that someone doesn't need surgery and they in fact do (I'm a physical therapist). Even if no surgery is needed, it is terribly painful. No fun

Both my DH and I broke our collarbones - him in a cycling accident and me in a car accident. His healed great and he had no problems. Mine shortened when it healed (the bone overlapped about an inch). Now my shoulder slopes some (I can't carry a purse on that shoulder without it falling off) and it caused me a lot of neck pain for at least a year. Physical therapy and massages helped eventually. Hindsight being what it is, my doctor was concerned at my two week appointment that the bone wasn't healing great and said to maybe think of surgery. I had just had abdominal surgery so having another surgery was the last thing I wanted. Looking back, I just wish I had gotten the surgery then. That being said, I think unless the bone breaks the skin or it gets broken in more than one spot, the general course of action is to let it heal on its own. I would definitely consider surgery if it seems like there will be a malunion based on the experience I had.

@youboots: He didn't want to miss work, but today was the worst day, and he just couldn't make it in.

Like most things (accident, working out, etc.), I think day 2 is always the worst.

His boss broke both feet while attempting to skateboard last year, so he's very empathetic. Old men trying to do "young" things can relate to each other!! ;)

@woodentulip: That sounds like the best case scenario!! I'm glad he had an easy recovery.

My husband's was pretty traumatic. He knew right away it was broken, because of the way he fell. I saw "if pain meds don't take away the pain, call your doctor" on his discharge forms just now. Looks like he'll be visiting the doc tomorrow. :(

@littlejoy: The ER doc thought he might need surgery based on how far apart his bones were but the orthopedic surgeon confirmed it the next day. He was in pain when he moved his arm but when it was stable and resting it was ok just sore.

My husband broke his a few years ago, and was actually really surprised it was broken. He got checked playing hockey (in a no-contact league!) and planned to just go for a massage to work it out. I am glad that I convinced him to have it looked at first...that massage would have HURT!

My husband was uncomfortable but not interested in the pain killers for whatever reason. His pain did not increase, and they knew immediately that he would not need surgery. They gave him a sling mostly to make other people aware of his break so that they would give that side space to heal properly.

I want to say about 6 weeks later he was able to pick up our daughter, and has only sometimes had some residual 'aches' that might be because he is getting older, or might be from that break!

I hope your husband's break is as easily healed as mine's was!

@Bluemasonjar: Did you guys know right away that he needed surgery? I imagine his pain is totally normal, but the worrier in mine thinks, "Is this normal?!?!" -- I might buy a $50 recliner from Craigslist! ;)

My DH broke his collarbone a few years ago and needed surgery. We moved the recliner into the bedroom so he could sleep at an incline and it made it easier for him to get up and down. Sending wishes for a speedy recovery!

Just wanted to express some sympathy- I broke my collar bone when I was 16. It was pretty painful for a few weeks- especially sitting up from laying down, but I just spent the summer watching TV on the couch. Hopefully he feels better soon!

DH broke his collarbone and bruised some ribs over the weekend. Needless to say, he's in a pretty extreme amount of pain today.

He did go to the ER, got a splint, has Ibuprofen and a prescription for painkillers to make him more comfortable. They did not think he'd need surgery ... even though it was a break, everything looks like it should line back up.

Any advice? Have you experienced this? I'd love to give him some "you'll probably only be miserable for this long" kind of encouragement. And, maybe ways you found to feel most comfortable?
