@Kimberlybee: There is a big cavity and damage and pain, oh the wonderful pain. She did say pulling was an option too.

@ALV91711: Sorry to hear about the need for a root canal. What are the signs that a root canal is needed? I had a fracture in a molar that was repaired but the dentist said I would need a root canal next time. At the time there was no pain or sensitivity while it wasn't repaired yet.

So I thought I'd update. I ended up waiting. I kept thinking about seeing a dentist but life got busy. Sunday night I was up most of the night in pain. Saw the dentist this morning. I have an infection that has to get cleared up and next week I get to go for a root canal and then a crown.

Moral of the story don't wait.

@yellowbird: Thank you for the input. I'm going to have to find a dentist but I think after reading what everyone gas said from waiting I will at least get it looked at and see if it is something that can wait. I don't want to have to get more extensive work because I was being cheep.

@ALV91711: I see people who have silver filings fracture enamel all the time. I would be less concerned if that were the case because a lot of the time it's a clean fracture with no decay. I would be concerned about decay getting bigger if you wait two months. You should be able to be seen to get a consult just to see if it's something that could wait or if it needs treatment asap.

@yellowbird: I'm not sure if there was a filling in that tooth. I know I've had a few but I don't think on that tooth. It is my very back molar.

@ALV91711: sometimes insurance has waiting periods for major work anyway so it may not matter. I wouldn't wait. If part if your tooth has broken off, there may be a bigger issue going on.

Did the tooth that broke have a filling in it before?

@Charm54: OMG, so much money!!

@PrincessBaby: I think waiting may just be worth it, even if it is a bit more work.

I may have to re check this week what my dental plan is going to cover and then that can help make the decision.

This exact thing happened to me while flossing! It was visible so I had to go in ASAP - big chunk of my tooth missing. Cue minor freak out, I thought my teeth were rotting. Turns out it was an old root canal that has fallen off.

I needed a crown which cost $1500+.... Thanks GOODNESS I had literally just gone on DHs dental and they covered crowns.

If it doesn't hurt I would probably wait. So $$$$!

I broke off a piece of dental work in the back of my mouth about 3 weeks before our wedding and was soooo busy and in a whirlwind, that I put off dental work (it totally didn't hurt) until we got back from our honeymoon and then got settled down. I ended up needing way more dental work because I waited, because yuck stuff got where it shouldn't have. But it was covered. And if you're not covered, then even if you have to have more dental work as a result of waiting, it will probably be a wash on the cost because you would spend a lot now paying out of pocket vs having to pay for more work later that is covered. So I would just take the gamble and wait:)

@Chaosmaven: Thanks for the input.

Of course these types of things only happen when you are in between coverage. If I currently had dental then I would just go in right away.

I would keep it as clean as possible and make an appointment for the earliest date you will have insurance, assuming you don't have any pain currently. I broke off a small part of a molar a few years ago, and it was so small I didn't really worry about it. Ended up with a root canal and a crown :sad: But as long as you don't let it go too long, you should be ok, and probably only need a crown or filling.

@mrs. bird: Sorry you are in the same situation. I hope your tooth stays pain free.

It is just a little piece. I'm kind of thinking of waiting and seeing. If it starts to hurt at all I'll go in but I want to avoid spending tonnes of money I don't have.

is it a big chunk or a little one? sadly, i'm in the same boat :( i broke a little chunk of a tooth off last wk & won't have dental until the end of feb, i'm just going to keep my mouth super clean & wait it out, but if i have any pain i'll def take care of it before that because if it gets infected or something i'm sure it will get $$$ quickly. i'm sorry about your tooth & hope someone has a more helpful suggestion for you!

Last night I was flossing and a chunk of my back molar broke off. It doesn't hurt at all.

I just started a new job a month ago and won't have insurance for 2 months.

Would you just suck it up and go see a dentist or wait it out? And why?
