I had this problem right around when I due to get my teeth cleaned. My dentist suggested brushing later in the day rather than first thing in the morning (I brush at night and in morning but only had this problem in morning); it worked.

Oh no, as soon as I saw your title I felt a sense of nostalgia! I had this for 17 weeks, every morning never failed I would get sick (some days worse than others.) Nothing helped and I just got used to it. I did switch toothpaste and that helped slightly to get a different flavor (cinnamon.) Otherwise I would brush and then use mouthwash afterwards hoping that helped kill the germs.

@MaisyMay: Bummer. It wasn't perfect but it usually changed my experience from full on wretching to just nausea :)

It appears that I have an answer! I've been noticing that if I'm congested, the mucus makes it much worse, so I've been blowing my nose and clearing out my throat (attractive, let me tell you!) and it helps. It appears that it's a combo of the mucus and the toothpaste foam that makes me sick. I still may end up nauseous, but it's not as bad and I may not actually throw up.

@Mrs. Jacks: Not a whole lot, but I really appreciate the suggestion. :-)

@MrsMccarthy: Thanks! We're 9 weeks today!
@Jennimac: Exactly! I told Hubs that I'm not complaining about it because it's reminding me that baby is sticking around.

Thanks all. I'm getting some mouthwash today and may get a few other types of toothpaste too.

It was funny last night when I came out of the bathroom. I looked at Hubs and quite excitedly told him "I didn't throw up this time!" :-) Oh the things we get excited over!

Ugh I had this problem too. I threw up so many times while brushing my teeth. What helped me a little was brushing after I ate breakfast. It was always worse in the morning especially if my stomach was empty. Luckily it went away in the second trimester and I can brush normally again.

Oh I feel feel your pain, that lasted my whole pregnancy! Mrs. Jacks recommended humming, and that helped some, but nothing worked 100%. I had better luck with mouthwash, but it couldn't be one of the super strong flavors. Maybe if you give that a try that will work for you. :)

The only time I got ill was when I brushed my teeth and I stayed green for hours after. I also have Invisalign and am supposed to brush my teeth every time I eat before I put my trays back in. UGH!!!! I figured out that the mint flavor of the toothpaste was a major offender. Someone gave me a wintergreen Altoid and it made me feel the same way and so a lightbulb went off! That minty taste seems to stay in my espophagus forever and is just...sick. So I bought some red toothpaste called Close Up and that's helped a lot. It's probably totally crapola toothpaste but whatever!

Oh also do you have an electric toothbrush? I just quit turning mine on and that helped some....

Good luck to you!!! I hope it goes away soon!

Yes, I had this SO, SO bad! I asked my dentist for some suggestions and he said prenatal vitamins should make up for the lack of quality brushing for this short time so not to worry too much. He told me to focus on getting in and getting out meaning don't spend too much time worrying about doing a perfect job, especially in the very back because that's likely what triggers the gag reflux/puking. Also, he told me to avoid brushing my tongue and just rinse with mouthwash instead since brushing there would likely make it worse. His final piece of advice was to experiment with different toothpastes. Buy some travel size samples so you don't waste money on a big tube. Try mint, regular, gel, cinnamon, etc. and see if you do better with one than the others. Good luck. I know how much it sucks, especially because you brush, puke, and then feel the need to brush again! It feels like a never ending vicious cycle!

Morning sickness hasn't been too bad, except for when I'm brushing my teeth. I start getting queasy as soon as my toothbrush is in my mouth and throw up fairly soon after that. I'm at a point where I'm considering getting some sort of mouth wash because I know I'm not brushing long enough!

Any other mommies to be dealing with throwing up when you brush your teeth? Any suggestions?
