We've been to 3 daycare parties and I gave $30 each because I have no clue what the norm is so I rather overdo it than seem cheap!

$15-$20. I also stock up on gifts when I see a good deal. $20 is the max that I will spend, though.

$15-20 for school friends
$30 for my best friends' kids

I spend around $10-$15. I try to do books or art supplies instead of toys.

@Corduroy: Agree. I dont think parents of parties expect casual (daycare or otherwise) friends to bring elaborate gifts. I think under $20 is typical. Sometimes I go over that if its a larger event party and our entire family of 5 is attending (like museum event or gymnastics party).

For close friends it also depends on what my friend or the parents want. Sometimes they are cool with lots of toys or I know something specific they want I dont mind splurging up to $40-$50.

Between $15 and 20.

I like to get two things, usually a family game and some kind of literacy item and this works out nicely.

I try to keep it around $10 but I stock up on stuff when there's a good deal so they aren't necessarily "cheap" gifts. For example in my gift closet I have a bunch of Sequence Jr games (DD's favorite) that I got for $10 each, and some Spin Art and Alex craft kits that I scored for $5 each.

I've dropped my kids' party gift budget to $10. After being on the receiving/hosting end I realized they can't enjoy that much stuff and the parents probably won't keep most of it very long.

If I'm giving to a kid that isn't having a bunch of kids over (like my nephews or cousins) then closer to $25. Also if their parents told me something specific or practical like (3T sweatpants) I'm happy to go over my cheap $10 limit.

LO doesn't have friends yet, but he's been invited to parties already. :silly: These are work "friend" parties so I have stuck to a $25-$30 budget, but I really let the item dictate how much I ultimately spend. For instance I bought a hard cover book from B&N and the total just came to a little over $19. I didn't beef up the gift by adding a small toy because I picked out exactly what the mom asked for.

$20. Less if I find a good deal. Sometimes I find a random sale and I stock up on gifts. Like I got my kids some of that magnetic sand stuff and paid around $20 for a large bag of it, and they love it. So then I saw some on clearance a couple of months later for only $10 and I bought 3 and have been giving them as birthday gifts. I saw them again at Christmas time back up at regular price.

I don't feel bad at all that I only paid half price.

Generally around $20...more if they're close and I see something more expensive that I know they would love. But I don't spend more just for the sake of spending more if I don't have anything special in mind for a child we are closer to, if that makes sense...likewise if I know that a close friend will love a particular $10 gift, I don't necessarily feel obligated to pad it with something more expensive.

When you buy birthday gifts for your LO's friends, what is your usual budget?

We have one coming up and I'm curious what others usually spend. I usually try to stay around the $20 range, but want to gauge if that's too much or too little.
