I dont think parents of parties expect casual (daycare or otherwise) friends to bring elaborate gifts. I think under $20 is typical. Sometimes I go over that if its a larger event party and our entire family of 5 is attending (like museum event or gymnastics party). </p> <p>For close friends it also depends on what my friend or the parents want. For instance I bought a hard cover book from B&amp;N and the total just came to a little over $19.
