My SIL and her husband did one of those groupon deals to Ireland for 7 days and under $900. Flights, hotel, car and some food included. It was their 2nd trip and they had just as good a time as the first, when they spent a lot more. Just an option.

Flights are so expensive I could easily blow $1000 on airfare if we wanted to go out of the country. If it were from WA state I think we would go to one of the west coast states. Airfare would hopefully be $600 for 2 and then we would have $400 for accommodations.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: Cheapest airfare is typically 45-60 days in advance.
I really like the Jetsetter website for last minute deals. Their rates are better than the other discount sights because you have to sign-in (it's free). I just stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago in their Tower Suite for $235 (including tax and fees). All the other sites were around $295 (not including taxes and fees) for the basic king room.

Flights are so expensive. And I'm kind of picky on where I'm willing to stay. So I would much rather go somewhere within driving distance (from Atlanta you can get to plent of nice beaches in FL) and then have nice place to stay when I get there, and cash available to enjoy experiences there.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: it's hard! There are still good deals when airlines open new routes. Just 2 months ago, there was an AWESOME dallas-paris flight deal because some airline opened a new non-stop route. $300 rt.

@Anagram: that's a fantastic deal! Airfare seems so expensive these days. I wonder if it is a better idea to buy in advance, or wait until the week of and just get the cheapest available option that sounds good to us? Seems like it isn't possible to get the last minute deals the way it was even a few years ago.

@T.H.O.U.: Yes, ideally, but I am willing to spend other money for food as, in my opinion, I will have to eat whether I am at home or elsewhere. Of course it is harder to eat on budget at restaurants than to eat at home, but then again I am the one who packed a Sam's club sized box of Nature Valley bars in my suitcase for a trip abroad (and actually cannot stomach a Nature Valley bar now! They send chills down my spine).

If you are down with roughing it a bit when you get there, then the flights are the most expensive part. SO I would find a flight deal first (and be open about where you are willing to go) and then look for acommodations second. Paying for a slightly more expensive flight to a cheaper country will also help you save money on food/accomodations/entertainment overall, I think.

My husband and I once scored rt tickets from DFW-Veracruz, MX when AA started a new route there for only $99 each. When we got there we stayed in private rooms in hostels and traveled all around. We had a blast and spent WAY less than $1000 for a week of travel.

It really depends on if you're near a major airport and where you are located? And tiem of year.

I'm in the NE but not near a major airport. So for 1k we (based off last week's special) we could get to St Thomas, USVI but probably mid week travel dates.

Oh wait, does that include money to spent while on vacation? haha in that case NYC is probably the farthest 1K will get us.

I think you could do a lot on 1K! Go on Southwest and look at the cheapest flights, pick somewhere & go on Travelocity and find a reasonable room! We also did Bahamas for almost 1K 2 years ago, we did a Groupon deal for the all inclusive resort and watched the flight prices!

Looking for inspiration for a vacation! As usual, budget is a limiting factor, but being poor has never prevented us from having fun while traveling!
