I bought a lot of size 0 - 3 months and then my son was born 6 weeks early and I had no newborn clothing much less preemie. So, it's all a guessing game.

@tysonja: Carter's sells a lot of onesies with built in mitts :) and our sleepers with built in mitts were from gap.

Thanks for all the postings on this one... I've been wondering about clothes, too. I thought I had gone a little crazy with NB stuff recently, but LO will be born at 37 weeks (late May/early June) at the latest, so I know she will be small. And while I do have some clothes on the registry (nothing much NB), I am not going to have a traditional shower since I can't travel home, so I have no idea what people will buy. Now I don't feel so bad about my baby stash ;).

I got these all in NB size:

9 short sleeve onesies
5 pants (1 footed)
4 sleepers (2 footed/2 no feet)
6 socks

@Mrs. Pen: i second mrs. pen's post!! i had a pretty healthy sized baby 7 1bs 13 oz and 21 inches long, and i hated not having clothes that were small enough for him at the beginning! don't need too much, but certainly get some nb and 0-3 stuff! :)

and YES to a previous poster.... sleepers and shirts with BUILT IN MITS to flip over! i'm gonna search out these for my next newborn for SURE. we only had 1 or 2 sleepers that had this feature for our first LO and i'd constantly wash them to use them :). separate mits are fine, too, but the built in ones are great :)

We wound up with a ton of clothing but nothing matched. It may not bother you, but now when I shop for her I try to get an entire outfit (onesie, pants, bib, hat, socks) or make sure I have those items at home if I'm just buying one of those things.

We barely received any clothing at our shower either, although we did get a lot after DD was born. Sleepers with built-in mitts are my favorite because she's always trying to claw her eyes out and flinging off her mitts - it gets really tedious picking them up and putting them back on!

DD also wears these Carters onesies under her sleepers and they're great -- nice quality cotton that holds up with repeated washings: http://www.carters.com/carters/Short-Sleeve-7-Pack-Bodysuits/V_111-931,default,pd.html?dwvar_V__111-931_color=White&cgid=carters-baby-neutral-little-layette-multi-pack-bodysuits&start=

@bree72: Agree! I bought my LO some fancy dresses, tops, & even a little pair if Seven For All Mankind jeans, and they're obviously just not comfortable for her....plus she'll spit up on it for sure and then it's a PITA to change her out of a complicated outfit!

Everyone has had good advice, but I'd just like to input that I wouldn't have bought anything in NB, 0-3, or 3-6 months that wasn't a sleeper, onesie, or soft elastic waist pants or shorts. I don't know if everyone else felt this way, but it's not easy (nor does it look comfy) to dress a small baby in things like jeans and fancy tops. I didn't really start putting my son in "real" clothing until 5-6 months, and by then he was mostly out if his 3-6 months clothes. Especially onesies. My son was small when he was born and has stayed remarkably average afterwards, so I think it's common for most babies to be in a larger size than what the tag month indicates.

I would definitely get some NB size stuff, our LO was 8lb 9oz and wore newborn stuff till around six weeks.

We didn't really go in for cute outfits for the first month or so and here's what we had:

6 short sleeved onesies
4 Sleepers (some with feet, some without)
3 Pairs of pants
2 Knitted woollen vests
4 Pairs of socks

We also had an assortment of booties, hats and knitted cardigans etc and I can get away with doing laundry for LO about every three days.

Have fun shopping!

Get some newborn stuff unless you have reason to believe that your baby will be really big. I only had a couple of newborn pieces, thinking that 3m clothes were *tiny* and therefore could not possibly be too big for my newborn. Big mistake.

I would definitely stick with workhorse clothes for the early months -- sleepers, footed pants, onesies (especially kimono-style ones for the beginning), kimono style shirts, and gowns. Don't get too many of any one type of clothing, since it's hard to tell at this point what you'll end up liking. We had tons of gowns in 0-3m size, and I literally only used one of them once or twice. But I know others who used gowns *all the time* at the beginning.

@betsyboop: see, I have to disagree here!!! I took everyone's advice and only bought two sleepers in sized nb, and he had nothing else in nb. Then a few sleepers in 0-3 and most of his clothes were 3-6+. That was what people said, he would skip nb and most of 0-3. Yeah... Not my kid! He was 7 lbs, a healthy normal sized newborn who gained weight just fine... He was in newborn for 12 weeks! He didn't fit into 3-6 months until 5-6 mos old.

I would buy 4-5 sleepers in nb and 0-3. And also two outfits in each size for when you go out. Include a few essentials as well: onesies and leggings are easy.
And then buy bulk of the clothing 3-6 mos and up. HOWEVER I would put off buying anything 3-6 mos+ because you never know how your baby will grow!

My son was born Feb '12. I calculated by summer (June)he would be 3-6 mos as he would be 4 mos old.. Well my little peanut was in 0-3 until July-August and the 3-6 were still big. He didnt outgrown3-6 onesies until 11 months old and he was in 6 months at 9 months old. At 12 months he is in 9 months and also most of his 6 month stuff.

Alternatively some babies do skip right to 3-6 and gain weight sooo fast it's not worth it to have too many clothes in each size. So that being said- hold off as much as you can unless you're getting essentials, basics, easy to mix match and season neutral items.

@Silva: aww my LO was born in April 2012. :)

I would get footed sleepers and short sleeved onesies to layer for the first few months. :) Don't need much else really at the beginning.

Yeah, for newborn and for months after I just put mine in footed sleepers, and sometimes onesies with pants. I found a few pairs of tights with a built in skirt, and that was my absolute favorite. I wasn't interested in taking off a bunch of clothing 10 times a day for diaper changes, so footed sleepers were my go to in that period. I had a warm suit to put over for going out.

Oooh you'll have so much fun shopping! You can buy stuff that is all to your taste now :) For newborn a fair few sleepers are a good idea as they're comfy, easy to put on and easy for diaper changes. Maybe a coat (depending on the weather) and some socks, hats and mitts. That's all you need!

@Silva: It totally depends on the brand! For us, LO was a long skinny baby, like consistently in the 70-80th %ile for height and 30-40th for weight. I am built the same way so it was not a total shock. So carter's and the carter's brand at target (just one you) were great, but circo at target and baby gap seemed to be for shorter, wider babies. Some brands do 0-3 mos, and others do 3 mos but they seemed about the same. I went thrifting when LO was about a month and had a better sense of her size and fit. Things also don't have to be super snug on a baby so you have some leeway!

@Silva: showers can be so random! You never know how it is going to turn out.

As for newborn gear, i think our keys were easy and comfortable. We had about 7-8 footed sleepers that were lo's main wardrobe for the first few weeks ad she basically lived in them. I know lots of people like the kimono wrap shirts too since they dont need to go over the head. Those were newborn size and fit great for 4-6 weeks, then we moved on to onesies and pants, or solo onesies. Consignment is a great idea because they grow too fast to wear out-- some of my favorites for lo have been hand me downs or thrifted! Happy shopping!

What season will LO be born in? In the first few months she lived in footed sleepers! Try to find the ones that have the flip cuffs for their little hands. Some onesies for layering.

My biggest piece of advice would be NOT to buy too many (if any) nice newborn sized outfits because you probably won't have the energy to take your baby out much when he/she is so young, and newborns grow SO quickly. I wish someone had told me this before my LO arrived. I'd stock up on pajamas and Carter's onesies. It's hard not to go crazy on the adorable newborn stuff but try to resist the urge!

So we had our shower today, and it was lovely- but I was surprised to find that we were given very few pieces of clothing. And what we were given was generally in bigger sizes - a lot from the 6 mos and up.

I haven't really done a ton of baby clothes shopping because we figured most people would get us clothing. I still have a small work shower (maybe 12 people?) in two weeks, but I am antsy to get started on a few of the essentials.

Also- this is very good news in a way, because I get to do all the super fun baby clothes shopping I've been dying to do! I'm going to take a trip to the local consignment store shortly- but thought I'd ask all you experts where you would start & what items you would focus on....
