@ladybee: I used this recipe
http://www.myrecipes.com/m/recipe/blueberry-oatmeal-muffins-0
I subbed coconut flour for the whole wheat and almond meal for the regular flour. And used milk instead of buttermilk, added a splash extra cause the almond meal made it a bit too dry. The batter smelled amazing and they taste just as good.

Had them as a snack so I'll let you know if my dinner numbers spike at all

Thanks for all the suggestions! Had am appointment with my doctor today and she agrees with me that with my numbers from finger sticks as well as the test itself being borderline that my case is currently pretty mild and is hopeful it will stay that way. Still have to follow the diet but she is less stringent than the hospital class so that was encouraging. Trying to look at this as a good thing. Forces me to eat a bit better, and shouldn't cause any complications for me or baby!

Also made amazing oatmeal blueberry muffins that are gd friendly if anyone wants the recipe

@mamabear87: I have had GD for about a month now. I have a complex issue of GD and a small baby (less than 10th percentile). I have to see a dietician every other week and I speak to her on the phone every couple of days. I found that with GD, I have to eat WAY MORE food than I normally would eat. Three meals a day and 3-4 snacks a day. Plus, I am drinking 2 extra protein Boosts a day and 3 glasses of whole milk a day. A snack before bed will help keep your blood sugar down during the night. My dietician says its mandatory. But, I am typically not hungry before bed, so I have found that drinking a high protein Boost works for me at bedtime. I cannot eat cereal, as much as I love it, because it makes my blood sugar rise to high. The best things I have found for breakfast are eggs (add cheese for extra protein) and steel cut oats with milk, butter and Splenda or Truvia. My favorite snacks are almonds, blueberries, strawberries, peaches and peanut butter. If I am craving sweets, I have found that the Breyer's No Sugar Added ice cream and popsicles are delicious and do not raise my blood sugar. I hope this helps! GD is no fun!

@MamaBear87: I believe having it in the past definitely ups the chances of having it again but I'm also thinking that going into a subsequent pregnancy with good health (BMI, diet, fitness etc) would possibly lower that risk.

I had it with my second and not my 1st. Though I'm wondering if I just developed it later the 1st time after the test. My OB said I'm likely to have it next time too. But I will say that diabetes runs in my family so I'm sure that's a factor too.

I had GD with my second and was so upset. But I got over it! It takes a bit of getting used to but honestly it's a good balanced diet!

My only advice is that sometimes the numbers won't make sense for no apparent reason. That just happens sometimes. That made me feel better and relax a bit more about it all.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely be taking advantage of trader Joe's. Lots of nuts and fun cheese. Currently it looks like I can basically just alter my current diet a bit, so that gets points. Although does make the why me worse since we were eating pretty good!

Working on breakfast options as I can't do eggs more than occasionally (love them but they don't agree with me if I eat a lot). But will definitely check out oatmeal.

Now to get over worrying that trying something will make my levels spike and I will fail!

Thanks again ladies!

I was bummed I couldn't do the whole "pregnant lady downing a pint of ice cream" thing. It was hard when I was tired and didn't want to think about what I could and could not eat. And I HATED having to eat something right before bed. But I stayed a very healthy weight and felt good with the diet as well--I also nerded out and read up all about diabetes in general, learning so much about how the body works!

A few tips:

If you can have someone else do grocery shopping for you, do it! The times I felt awful were when I was surrounded by foods I could not have.

Get boring. Figure out what you can and cannot eat safely, then stick with those meals. Growing a baby takes up enough of your energy, so don't waste time thinking about what you can eat!

Know that it might get harder to control. It was a moving target for me as things progressed.

Don't go wild, but do allow yourself to skip testing if it's a special occasion. During my pregnancy with GD, I had Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, my birthday, and a baby shower. For a few of those occasions, I decided to allow myself to be a little looser with what I ate, go on a long walk afterwards, but not test and feel guilty. It's a marathon you're running!

I'm sorry! I had it too. It SUCKS, but the silver lining is that I ate so healthy and therefore didn't gain too much weight. I feel like I'd eat pretty crappy without GD. Towards the end I sometimes just let it go if one meal was bad here and there!

Do you have a Trader Joes near you? They have these amazing mini ice cream cone that's the perfect size.

Def look through GD posts on here.. Lots of good info!

One bit of advice that helped me was that the first couple of weeks after diagnosis are about experimenting and finding the foods that work for me. As an example, I could safely eat porridge / oatmeal with a small amount of raisins, milk and sugar for breakfast so that's what I ate every.single.morning. I modified a recipe for blueberry muffins (wholewheat flour, reduced sugar) so I always had a batch in the freezer if I needed something to grab and go. Crackers and cheese were my friend!

I can also recommend the GD board over at BabyCentre, lots of really knowledgable and supportive ladies over there :-)

I had it (failed by one point!) and at first I was really mad because I had been so careful. Full fat dairy products, lean meats, nut butters and veggies are your bffs now.
I ate eggs in some form for breakfast daily. Scrambled if I had time, hard boiled if I was on the go. A small apple with natural peanut butter and a cheese stick was my mid morning snack. A lunch favorite or a bigger snack was an avocado (keep it in its skin but slice in half and remove pit) with hot sauce, lime juice, cheese, salt and pepper under the broiler until the cheese melted. I made frozen yogurt using full fat plain Greek yogurt mixed with natural peanut butter and cinnamon. Mix it up and freeze until your desired consistency. Cobb salads or any veggie heavy salad with chicken were another favorite. When I craved something besides water to drink I liked unsweetened ice tea or polar springs flavored seltzer.
Once you figure out what spikes you, you can have some fun. I figured out that I could have a small serving of full fat ice cream as long as I ate a cheese stick before or after it. You'll figure that out too
Good luck and remember the positives - you won't gain as much weight as you might have, your skin will be amazing (thanks sugar free life) and you are doing a great job as a mom already!

I;m so sorry. It's over for me now, but I had GD with my second pregnancy and definitely felt like why me. I cried and had quite a pity party for myself, which I think is totally understandable! Especially since I'm terrified of needles, even those little tiny ones. I ended up having to take medication because no matter what I did, my blood sugar was always high when I woke up in the morning.

@MamaBear87: So sorry to hear! I take my test in two weeks. I am expecting to have it! My mom has diabetes and I have been a vegetarian for 10 years (read: diet consists mainly of carbs). My OB has already told me to watch my carb intake. BLAH! Haha. If you get any good recipe ideas I will save them too!! Good luck.

I was diagnosed at 6 weeks due to issues before getting pregnant and it pissed me off. There were a lot of tears (sad and angry). I'm only 12 weeks and I know the baby isn't producing insulin yet so I know this will change. As of right now, I can eat whatever I want except french fries and cereal. Those are the only two things that give me high numbers.

I had it when I was pregnant. I could still eat cereal, but I had to make sure and really watch my portions. I usually had the recommended serving, 1/2 a cup of milk, and 8oz of juice (I measured exactly to be sure). I also really got into sweet potatoes.

Just found out I have gd. I have borderline numbers so was a bit like no they're crazy. Had cereal for breakfast and sure enough, 149 when I'm supposed to be under 130. On the upside this morning fasting was excellent number and after dinner was fine.

Anyone else get diagnosed recently and wondering why me? Or anyone who has it and has good ideas for menus and daily recipes?
