When I was unable to qualify for federal financial aid, I was able to take out private student loans. I actually took out one in 2007 from Wells Fargo (interest rate 3.25%), one in 2010 from Bank of ND (interest rate 1.7%), and another in 2011 from Wells Fargo (interest rate 7.75%). As you can see that most of the rates are better than the government loans (currently at 6.8% for graduate students and 3.4% for undergrad students I think). Additionally you could qualify for unsubsidized federal loans regardless of income level. Make sure to check into all your options before writing it off completely.

Also, $75 is quite a small fee if you consider that with a loan you would pay much more in interest than $75 and that delaying graduation/getting a job by another semester costs much more than $75 in lost income.

Wow, I pretty much went through this exact same thing. My only option at the time was to put my tuition on a personal line of credit (that my DH--my boyfriend at the time--took out for me in his name). I just paid little by little on it, and now there is only $1500 left.
I totally feel your pain. I was married while I was still in school and it was super tough. I know there is nothing more stressful than finances. Hang in there!

@Bookworm: Thank you for the encouraging words! I really can't wait till I'm holding that darn diploma already!

@jessiejo17: My school does have a payment plan, but in order to do it, it costs $75. So stupid to pay extra just to spread it out over a couple of months. I would have done it if it were free, but to waste even more money then. Plus I wanted to take at least 2 classes because then my loans that I have already would be in deferrment and I wouldn't have to make payments while in school. Where as if I just take 1 class, I will have to pay for that class, and my student loans on top of it. booo..

Check to see if your school has a payment plan, that's what we had to do with DH and it was nice to not have to pay in one lump some, but split across a couple months! Maybe try to do one class at a time just to stay committed, otherwise it's easier to quit all together and that's a lot of wasted money and time!

Hopefully things work out for you!

I'm sorry, that sucks :( I was in college for 5 and a half years because by the end, I just couldn't pay for more than one class at a time. I know how much it sucks to have to take a break due to finances.. I totally sympathize. By the end of it, it felt completely stupid and pointless to get my dang degree. I'm glad I finished though, and love having a diploma. It's worth it in the end, but the journey sure can be tough. Hugs and good luck to you :)

@BeachMama: I know and that's what I keep thinking, but we are not in a place at all right now yet to have kids.

I've been in college since 2006 though, and I'm just so sick of school and having nothing to show for it yet too. So I'm bummed about being delayed again.

I don't think you ever feel ready to have kids, especially financially (at least that's how it seemed for me). I usually just tell myself that things always have a way of working themselves out. Sorry about your roof -that really sucks :-(

So we bought a house a few months ago, and we knew from the begining that we would need a new roof. Well we need one a lot sooner than expected, like ASAP actually. I am also in school, and ever since getting married now, we make too much money together to qualify for any financial aid. So we would have to pay for it all out of pocket which is right around $1,000 per class and I take 2 classes/semester.

Sooo obviously we can't afford for me to take classes this fall, and I'm super bummed about that. Mainly because we are waiting for me to finish school to even start thinking aobut children. :-( So we're putting it off even longer now. I just feel like we are never going to get to a point where we are comfortable and ready to have kids. I'm just in a really "bummed" mood right now. But I don't want to share it with DH because I know that he is doing everything he can to make as much money as he can (working 2 jobs right now), and I don't want to stress him out even more with him knowing that I'm upset by it you know? So I just need to come and complain here!
