@SweetiePie: Again, thanks! I'm hopdul it will only be a week or two, then (rather than up to 4-6weeks that was mentioned for DH's & my chromosomes). I think we probably would do PGD, if one of us is responsible for a partial trisomy or deletion... We have 3 frozen embryos, once we decide what our next steps need to be...

And I may totally reach out about post-D+C issues. It's been 2 years since my last...and I don't remember too much abou the immediate aftermath. This time, so far, so good though! Thanks again!

@FliegepilzHut: Sorry you had your D&C today. If you have any questions about recovery let me know. I've had 2, unfortunately. But all in all they were "good" experiences and I'm glad I went that route.

I think for the fetal tissue testing it took about a week for results.
I think that the karyotyping of my husband and I took a bit longer. I think 1.5-2 weeks.

I'm so glad that you are being proactive! We are our own best advocates. Do you think you'd pursue PGD if one of you is carrying a genetic disorder/abnormality?

@SweetiePie: Thank you for all the information! Do you remember how long it took to get your results, by any chance? So, we are having testing done on tissue from my D+C today, but I was told that the lab my hospital uses only is able to provide definitive answers a portion of the time. Because of some kind of exclusive relationship with the lab, I can't send tissue to a more specialized lab for genetics. But I'm really hoping that this can give us an answer. This is actually my 2nd m/c-- the first was a MMC (spontaneously conceived) at 8 weeks; this was a blighted ovum (following IVF, 5dt), detected on first sono at 6.5 weeks.

ETA: No, they didn't specifically raise the issue of a translocation...but the kind of losses I've had suggest that there was something genetically wrong (either inherently or arising during development). DH and I would much rather know if that's what we're working with (rather than go through this again...).

@SweetiePie: my RE tested my husband for a translocation on a whim (her words). I'm so glad that she did because it was wonderful to have answers. She really didn't expect it to come back abnormal. I agree that genetic testing is so important if you've had multiple miscarriages.

@FliegepilzHut: hi! Ok sorry it took me so long to reply, it took me some time to track down my test results.
I think you know way more about the test types than I did :-) All my doc said was that they would send the fetal tissue for genetic testing.
The results I got back say at the top "Chromosome Analysis" and then the results say "Abnormal Karyotype" and then in the analysis it says "Cytogenetic Analysis shows...."

Our results showed a partial trisomy 18. The "partial" part is what sent up a red flag for us to get tested. So they did karyotyping on my husband and I. I have a balanced translocation between 18 and 20. So our only recourse was IVF w/PGD. Odds then even weren't great but somehow we had a "normal" embryo the first time (the only one out of 13 eggs retrieved) and it stuck!
I am now 34 weeks pregnant with a boy. So even if you do carry a translocation it can end happily :-) It's a long hard road and it may not happen right away, but it's possible.

I know you did IVF and I was cheering you on on the IVF thread. Still so very bummed for you :-( But remind me, is this your first miscarriage? Are they being extra vigilant because of IVF? Are they bringing up the possibility of translocation or is that from your own research? I'm just curious! I have few folks that I can relate to on HB when it comes to translocation. And I'm a big advocate of genetic testing after what we went through so I like to hear how people come to that. We were just extremely lucky that my doc at the time suggested it. Otherwise who knows how many more miscarriages I would have had (or worse).

@SweetiePie: I lost my baby at 21 weeks and I had fetal testing done to rule out any genetic issues. Also by doing this, my doctor can prescribe a CVS early on for my next pregnancy along with other care that wouldn't normally be covered by insurance otherwise.

@SweetiePie: Thank you! There is a lab in CA (Natera?) that does SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) testing and has a really fast turnaround and high rate of success detecting genetic defects on m/c tissue... Apparently, otherwise, my hospital uses a lab that is somehow less reliable. I'm really hoping that we can get some answers...either that this was a ranfom duplication/deletion of chromosomes or that one of us (DH or I) has a translocation... I would hate to go through this again, not sure of the risks!

I'm going to bump this depressing topic.

If you've had a recent D+C: were genetic tests sent? If so, were they conclusive? And do you know which test was ordered?

I think I'm going to pursue POC testing...now in the process of trying to get prior authorization through my insurance company. Hopefully, if it's positive, it will save me and my DH some time and money (especially if it obviates the need for peripheral blood testing for us)...

@SweetiePie: There is a low likelihood of balanced translocation, so I would just take it one step at a time and look into the testing because it's not guaranteed to be from a parent. (Though the calculus may be slightly different after 2 miscarriages). I have friends who were sure that one of them carried the partial trisomy that their daughter got. Turns out it was a de novo (brand new) mutation.

Here's a fairly good lay explanation:

We did get tested, like Bee mentioned above. One thing that was unexpected was that they slipped and told us the sex of the baby... that wasn't something we were prepared for!

@SweetiePie: Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I was going to post more about my results, but it sounds like you now have more information.

In case it's helpful, my understanding is that a "partial trisomy" or "mosaic" means that you both passed along the right number of chromosomes, but there was a cell division error early in the development process of your fetus...so that the cells that resulted from the error had an extra chromosome while those that didn't had a normal number of chromosomes. Since cell division is controlled by your DNA, having a higher potential for error is probably hereditary.

That said, it's not impossible that you can have a normal pregnancy (you and your DH both have the right number of chromosomes). There is also very good early genetic testing available for most of the typical trisomies, including the non-invasive fetal DNA testing. I believe those tests are slightly less accurate for mosaic conditions, but not much.

And as was mentioned above, there is the possibility of doing pre-implantation genetic diagnosis should you choose to go the IVF route. Though keep in mind that since they only test one or two cells from an early (5-day) blastocyst, there is a chance they can miss a mosaic. There are also other reasons that this is considered unreliable...it has a high false positive rate.

Hang in there. Just because you have a predisposition toward mosaicism does not mean you can't have children...your odds are probably still very high for having a normal child. It's really easy to get caught up in all the odds and relative risks and lose sight of the fact that even with some of the most severe risks the odds are still in your favor to have a healthy pregnancy.

@LovelyPlum: Thanks for the kind words  I miss you guys too!
Unfortunately its the "partial trisomy" part that makes it less likely to be a random mutation. Not sure if that was @Mrs. Bee's experience as well? ANY insight or experiences are appreciated since I feel like I'm flying blind. Full trisomy is more likely to be "random" or "de novo" while "partial" has a greater chance of being genetic and a possibility in every pregnancy.
I just hope we get our results back soon so that we know what our next steps are.

@MrsMcD: Thanks so much for the well wishes! Yes, that's the other scary part...if we are at a heightened risk for Trisomy 18 it doesn't just mean miscarriage, it could mean having a child with T18 and very short lifespan, which just breaks my heart to think about. My heart goes out to your friends that had to go through that experience. Did their baby live long after birth?

Of course I'm still just imagining and preparing myself for the worst. God willing it will have been a random occurrence. Its just so scary to be told that what our fetal test came back with is not necessarily random and could have something to do with us. We just didn't imagine this would happen, we really expected them to say "its random, nothing we can do, try again". So now we're not sure what our status is and we aren't supposed to try until we know. The waiting is killer.

@SweetiePie: I'm glad that you have gotten some answers. I think that one of the babies that Mrs. Bee miscarried was a trisomy baby, and they (obviously) have two beautiful kids! Hoping that you can get some more information to help you make your decision. It is so frustrating to not know what is going on, and I hope this knowledge brings you peace!

For what it's worth, I've missed you on here! Please reach out whenever you need.

@Mrs. Bee: @milano14: @blackbird: Thanks ladies for your input!

So further update, for those interested - our fetal genetic analysis showed that it was actually a partial trisomy 18 which is less likely to be a random occurrence and more likely to be something DH or I is passing along through our genes. Kind of a bummer since if its something we're passing it means its not random and there's a chance every time we conceive that we'll miscarry.
On the other hand, its good to know either way and to not go into the next pregnancy thinking we have the same chances as anyone else only to be disappointed again. At least we'll be prepared a bit more for the possibility.
@blackbird, I heard that too. I'm not sure we'd do IVF but its good to know its an option if we just can't seem to get it right ourselves AND we decide we must have a baby. We both agreed that if we can't do it on our own, maybe its God's way of saying we aren't meant to have kids. It would be sad, but there are also pros to no kids so...trying to look on the bright side! :-)

But anyways, a lot of this is preemptive. We're still waiting for both of our results to come back to see if we are carriers. If we aren't, then it was likely a freak thing that happened twice. If we are, then we have a lot to think about!

As always, thanks for the support! I've been pretty MIA on HB lately since I feel so in limbo and helpless, so it was nice to check in and see the new comments :-)

If there's something that you and DH are passing on in your genes, you can have the sperm and egg tested and have the 'bad' ones weeded out and the good ones implanted! That's what our genetic counselor told us when we had a bunch of testing done.

Sometimes it's just a freak DNA error, too.

I'm so sorry for your losses.
I had a miscarriage in January as well, 9 weeks along, and elected to have a d&c. Since I was having the d&c we opted to have the testing done. It was covered by insurance and we got the results within a week and met with a genetic counselor to review.
I have no regrets having it done. It provided some peace of mind that it was nothing that could have been prevented and the likelihood of it happening again was slim.

I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

After our second miscarriage, they suggested testing (I was 29 i think) and it was determined to be the second most common trisomy if I remember correctly. It did give us peace of mind that there was nothing we could have done. No regrets.

The next time I got pregnant with Charlie.

I hope you're able to get some definitive answers soon. :)

@FlyingSquirrel: In re-reading your post, I see that you passed ok the trisomy. So what does that mean for you guys moving forward? I wonder what will happen if we find that one of us passed it on.
