We had something similar, the sides were all integrated into the base, so there was no way we could have taken out the side panels. It was like a one piece wrap around construction.

I felt fine using something like that when LO was itty bitty and not moving.

I honestly don't know what's safe for newborns, but our bassinet had mesh on the sides. She would often press her face against the side and that made me feel better about it. As soon as she grew too tall so her face was against the fabric instead of mesh, we switched her to the crib. But I'm just extra paranoid about that stuff, and with no actual knowledge to back it up.

So, we have a bassinet we are planning on using for the first 2-3 months of our daughter's life. As everyone knows, it is recommended that you do not use bumpers anymore. Well, the bassinet has all sorts of fabric around it and on the sides. Is that a problem? Should we remove the decorative fabric while she's in it or not worry about it since she'll be right next to me while I'm sleeping?

It's this brand, just slightly different than this bassinet: http://www.kolcraft.com/baby-products/bassinets/all-bassinets/cuddle-n-care-rocking-bassinet-with-light-vibes-mobile.html
